With the Perfect Game scouting staff spread throughout the country and another action-packed season in the books, we'll take a look back at some highlights from individual states and regions over the next couple of weeks, from the 13u level all the way up through the collegiate ranks and the MLB Draft.

Biggest 13u/14u Breakout Player

Left-hander Carson Bolemon delivered big performances throughout the summer in some of our biggest events. The Greenville, S.C. native works in the low-80s with his fastball currently and projects for continued velocity gains as he matures. Bolemon’s ability to land his curveball for strikes consistently is the separator, as he can go with that pitch in big moments. Look for him to continue showing the same pitchability and refinement for years to come. Trenton Maybin is a name to keep an eye on, as he has emerged this summer with standout bat speed and loads of quick-twitch athleticism. He will only continue getting better as he refines and matures his immensely projectable profile.

Biggest Summer Moment

Jackson Ferris’ performance at the PG National Showcase was another standout performance this summer. The Ole Miss commit opened up his appearance in the 94-96 mph range, while continuing to show the ability to miss bats with both his secondary offerings. The outstanding left-hander dominated at every stop along the circuit in 2021 and has solidified himself as one of the top prep arms for the 2022 MLB Draft.

Biggest Breakout Player

Walker Jenkins was a name that we have come to know over the years, but he has continued to ascend the rankings and finds himself at No. 2 in our latest Class of 2023 Player Rankings. The Oak Island, N.C. native had an outstanding 2021 campaign for his South Charlotte Panthers squad, including an extremely loud performance at the Underclass All-American Games. Jenkins is a 6.75 runner with monster power from the left side and has the ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball.

Biggest College Moment

We will go with the more positive college moment here, as many remember what happened with North Carolina State in this year’s CWS. The Wingate Bulldogs came out of the loser’s bracket to win the 2021 Division-II National Championship. Coach Gregory’s squad won five straight elimination games to take home the crown, knocking off top-seeded Central Missouri in the final, 5-3. They finished 2021 with a 39-13 record to win its first baseball national championship in school history.

Biggest Draft Moment

There was buzz throughout the high school season on how high Kahlil Watson could go in this past July’s MLB Draft. He started off the abbreviated season like a man on a mission and there was talk of him potentially going in the top-five. Ultimately, he ended up going No. 16 overall to the Miami Marlins. A pair of hard-throwing right-handers that play their college ball in the region found their way into the first round as well. Gavin Williams of East Carolina (No. 23 overall) and Ryan Cusick of Wake Forest (No. 24) were chosen with back-to-back picks by the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves, respectively. Jackson Merrill (Severna Park, Md.) was a fast riser who capped off an outstanding first round for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Looking Forward

High School: There is a ton of talent amongst the 2022 and 2023 class within the region. Plenty of watchful eyes will make their stops along the way to watch the likes of Tristan Smith, Ryan Clifford and Walker Jenkins. Look out for lefty Cameron Johnson as he continues to show off his immense arm talent and improving command. He was up to 94 mph in Jupiter from a tough angle, while showcasing two solid secondary offerings. There should be tons of scouts in attendance for conference matchups featuring Pro5 Baseball Academy, P27 Academy and Combine Academy, as their rosters are bolstered with loads of talent.

College: Is this the year ECU and Coach Cliff Godwin breakthrough the proverbial wall and make it to Omaha? With seven returning position players and five key pitchers, could this be the season that the Pirates fans have been yearning for? They reached a Super Regional in 2021 and look poised to be amongst the best that college baseball has to offer this year. North Carolina State and Coach Avent look to avenge their controversial finish in last year’s CWS. Look for a potential bounce back year from both North Carolina and Clemson, too, as they look to get back to their winning ways.
