Opening Day Boasts 87 PGAAC Alums

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- As has become the norm, former Perfect Game All-Americans litter MLB Opening Day rosters today, with 87 alums of the Classic suiting up across the country, as of 12 pm ET, although rosters remain somewhat fluid up until first pitch.

PG All-Americans will represent 28 different franchises, with just the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox the exception, although those dominoes will likely fall at some point this season with AJ Puk (Oakland) and Michael Chavis (Boston) getting looks in the Big Leagues already, and both serve as building blocks for the future of their respective clubs.

The Atlanta Braves employ the most PG All-Americans on their Opening Day roster with six, including reigning NL MVP Freddie Freeman. He is joined by Ian Anderson, Max Fried, Alex Jackson, Tyler Matzek, and Austin Riley. Touki Toussaint, who will start the year on the Injured List, is also an alum of the game.

The Cincinnati Reds have seven former All-Americans who will see time early this year, but with Sonny Gray and Michael Lorenzen starting the year on the IL, they will roll with five on Opening Day. Those players include Cameron Bedrosian, Carson Fulmer, Lucas Sims, Jesse Winker, and Jonathan India, who will make his Major League debut when he cracks the lineup.

The Yankees (Gerrit Cole, Clint Frazier, Aaron Hicks, DJ LeMahieu, Jameson Taillon), White Sox (Dylan Cease, Zack Collins, Lucas Giolito, Yasmani Grandal, Michael Kopech), Cubs (Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward, Dillon Maples, Tony Wolters), and Mets (Albert Almora, Dellin Betances, Francisco Lindor, David Peterson, Dominic Smith) all have five All-Americans on their rosters as well.

There are five former MLB MVPs on Opening Day rosters who suited up in the PG All-American Classic; Bryant, Freeman, Bryce Harper, Andrew McCutchen, and Buster Posey. There are also World Series MVPs Madison Bumgarner and Corey Seager, perennial MVP candidates such as LeMahieu, Lindor, and Alex Bregman, and a number of Cy Young candidates like Cole, Fried, Jack Flaherty, and Giolito.
