Best of 7 Series: Great Plains

Photo: Maxwell Carlson (Perfect Game)

Each segment of the Best of 7, 10-part series has been assembled by one of PG’s scouts. The idea of this exercise is to put together a team with the best amateur players from 10 different regions from across the country in an attempt to win a seven-game series. The players are not necessarily the top prospects in each state/region, but those that have consistently proven they have what it takes to win consistently at a high level. Which region would win such a series? Stay tuned to Perfect Game and join us @PerfectGameUSA to chime in.

Best of 7 Series: Florida | Pacific | SoutheastTexahoma | Southwest | Midwest | Mid-Atlantic | Northeast

Great Plains Region:
Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota

Ian Moller
An elite-level backstop and potential first-round selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, Moller captains the Great Plains team behind the plate. A native Iowan, Moller proved himself as one of the nation’s best at the PG Underclass All-American Games, performing as well as anybody on the offensive side of the ball. Moller got on base at nearly a .500 clip during the 2019 PG season. The catch-and-throw skills are advanced and the athletic junior provides some thump to the lineup as well.

Peyton Williams
Perfect Game’s Iowa High School Player of the Year in 2019, Williams provides some serious power and winning experience to the Great Plains lineup. A lefthanded, middle-of-the-order type of bat, Williams was hitting .298 with 16 RBI at the stoppage of the college season. The Johnston, Iowa native slugged 1.000 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI during his senior year last summer, leading the Dragons to a 36-6 record. With a history of winning and plenty of power projection, Williams is the guy to man first base.

Brady Slavens
Slavens put together arguably the most impressive spring in the Great Plains region offensively, hitting .507 through 22 games for the Cavaliers. Slavens has the versatility to slot anywhere on the infield but fits well at the hot corner with this All-Region team. The sophomore finished with 25 extra-base hits, collecting 14 home runs and 47 RBI. The Arkansas commit provides some stability and is another well-rounded lefthanded bat in the lineup.

Izaya Fullard
A JUCO product that can play second and third base for the Hawkeyes, Fullard was hitting .400 with six extra-base hits and 21 RBI when the season ended. Fullard is a big-bodied infielder that is a threat to leave the yard and has also been a sure-handed fielder since arriving at Iowa. In two years, Fullard has a .984 fielding percentage (just six errors) and brings plenty of winning experience to the team.

Spencer Schwellenbach
A solid defender with arm strength that plays up the mdidle, Schwellenbach captains the infield as one of the better college draft prospects for 2021. Schwellenbach is a rangy defender that can makes things go at the top of the order and the Nebraska sophomore also flashes some real juice at times. Schwellenbach made just eight errors as a freshman in 2019 and earned six All-Tournament Team selections during his time as a prep at PG events.

Josh Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald entered 2020 as a Top 30 JUCO Prospect in the country, using his combination of speed and strength to become a likely weapon in the Kirkwood Community College lineup. Fitzgerald was hitting .500 with three home runs and six RBI when the season ended and provides plenty of options at the top of the order. Fitzgerald is a proven winner that can play center field, steal some bags and make things go for an offense. The 2018 National Showcase alum would be an excellent catalyst for this Great Plains team.

Chase Jans
Recently showcasing his 6.42-second 60-yard dash speed at the World Showcase, Jans provides an advanced hit tool with some potential for power near the top of the order. The Kansas commit has a big arm up to 90 mph from the outfield and projects for any of the three outfield positions. The Top 100 player in the 2021 class has proven to have the ability to rake in game action, batting .455 with a 1.080 OPS at 2019 PG Tournaments.

Dakota Kotowski
A name to follow for the 2021 MLB Draft, Kotowski has had a strong two years at Missouri State. After slugging 12 home runs as a freshman in 2019, Kotowski had hit three in 2020 before the season came to a halt. Kotowski provides some defensive stability on an outfield corner and adds some versatility to the team as well.

Justin Dirden
In most lineups, the DH spot is saved for that guy that can flat-out hit. Dirden did just that for the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State during the shortened 2020 season, batting .414 with nine long balls and 26 RBI. Dirden has hit at every stop along the way in his career, batting .340 during a full season in 2018 and belting 10 home runs at Jefferson College a year before. With an outrageously impressive 1.341 OPS through 17 games, it seems fair to expect some serious firepower out of the DH spot here.

Calvin Harris
A 2019 PG All-American, Harris can serve as a true utility man on the Great Plains team. The Ole Miss signee provides some pull-side juice from the left side and has advanced receiving skills behind the plate. An athletic and versatile player, the 2016 14u PG Select Festival participant can be plugged in behind the plate, at first base and potentially the corner outfield if necessary.

Max Meyer
Meyer serves as an ace in any rotation he finds himself in, and that is no different here. The athletic righthander features a fastball into the triple digits and a wipeout slider that has pushed him into the Top 10 conversation for the 2020 MLB Draft. Meyer has pitched in big games dating back to his freshman year with the Gophers, giving himself the experience and stuff to lead this pitching staff.

Ian Bedell
A 2017 PG All-American, Bedell came into his own as a starter in 2020 after cementing himself as one of the top bullpen arms in baseball the year before. Bedell has pitched at a high level in both SEC play and the Cape Cod League over the last year, pitching to the tune of a 1.56 ERA and 3-1 record for the Tigers before earning a 4-0 record and all-star team honors in the Cape. Bedell provides experience and options on the staff in a seven-game set.

Carter Baumler
One of the more polished prep arms in the region, Baumler provides some starter stability to any rotation as the righthander commands the zone well and tends to fill it up with strikes. A TCU signee, Baumler has shown the ability to miss the barrel with the fastball at PG events and was lights out at the Iowa High School State Tournament in 2019. A 2019 PG All-American, Baumler has pitched on the big stage and would be able to get some big outs.

Maxwell Carlson
A 2019 PG All-American, Carlson has long been raved about for having a plethora of pitches that move anywhere but straight. Carlson features a low-90s fastball he can command to both sides of the plate as the athletic righthander dominated on the PG circuit in 2019. Carlson did not allow an earned run in 16 2/3 innings, striking out 35 and allowing just six hits.

Carson Seymour
Seymour has risen up draft boards and certainly put together a strong start to the 2020 campaign with Kansas State. Seymour features strong stuff from the right side, striking out over a batter an inning posting a 3.92 season ERA. A strong candidate to come out of the pen or in long relief for this Great Plains team, Seymour is ranked as the 118th prospect overall for the 2020 draft.

Trey Dillard
A 16th round draft selection in 2018, Dillard features a big-time fastball up to 97 mph and will be asked to close games on this Great Plains pitching staff. Dillard has the late-game experience you look for in a closer and has shown the ability to miss bats with a mid-80s slider as well. The righthander was a National Showcase participant in 2016 and posted a 2-0 record with five saves before the 2020 season came to a halt.

JP Massey
Massey has stood out as a versatile arm for the Golden Gophers, showcasing a lively fastball in the low-90s with a clean and repeatable delivery. Massey currently ranks as a Top 100 prospect for the 2021 MLB Draft. The Chicago native is really starting to hit his stride from a development standpoint and brings both starter and relief experience to the pitching staff.

Trey Frahm
Frahm ran his fastball up to 96 mph in Jupiter and has the type of fastball that plays really well in the back end of any bullpen. The strong righty creates some sinking life to the fastball with that electric arm speed and will be able to miss the barrel late in games. Ranked as the No. 111 player in the 2020 class, Frahm complements Dillard well to lock down games late.

Christian Little
Little is as polished a prep arm as you will see in the 2021 class, currently ranked as the No. 2 player in the country. The righthander features a fastball that has been up to 94 mph at past events and already has advanced feel for both his mechanics and a tight breaking ball. Little has posted a career 1.00 ERA at PG Tournaments and has the makeup and stuff to get hitters out at any level.

Jack Dreyer
Dreyer was a 2017 Iowa High School State Champion and was serving as the staff ace for the Hawkeyes in 2020. A 2016 Midwest Top Prospect Games alum, Dreyer pitches with extreme poise and commands a trio pitches in his arsenal for strikes. The lefty was off to a strong season after an injury kept him out in 2019, posting a 3.32 ERA and limiting opposing hitters to a .171 average against. Dreyer has both starter and relief experience in his college career, adding some good versatility to the staff with a knack for missing bats.

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 66

Ron Wolforth

The Number That Just Killed MLB Expansion: 1,217   USA Today's Bob Nightengale dropped a bomb shell recently that the baseball world is still digesting. Major League Baseball wants to expand to 32 teams. Team executives are quietly opposing it and the reason has nothing to do with cities or money.   They cannot find enough healthy pitchers.   Between 2020 and 2024, professional baseball performed 1,026 Tommy John surgeries at the minor-league level alone. Another 191 at the Major League level. More than twelve hundred elbow reconstructions in five years on the best young pitchers in the world.   That is not bad luck. That is a system reporting a verdict on itself.   For fifteen years, the youth-baseball industry has chased one number: velocity significantly more than projectability and arm care.    Recruiters scout by it.    Social...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

Flames Capture 18U BCS Title

Alyssa Golden
Article Image
Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...
