Best of 7 Series: Mid-Atlantic

Photo: Alec Burleson (ECU Athletic Media Relations)

Each segment of the Best of 7, 10-part series has been assembled by one of PG’s scouts. The idea of this exercise is to put together a team with the best amateur players from 10 different regions from across the country in an attempt to win a seven-game series. The players are not necessarily the top prospects in each state/region, but those that have consistently proven they have what it takes to win consistently at a high level. Which region would win such a series? Stay tuned to Perfect Game and join us @PerfectGameUSA to chime in.

Best of 7 Series: Florida | Pacific | SoutheastTexahoma | Southwest | Midwest

Mid-Atlantic Region:
Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia

Joey Loperfido
Getting to the opponents’ bullpen early is a determining factor that ultimately decides who wins. Loperfido provides the grind-it-out, move-a-runner-over mentality. The lefthanded hitting outfielder finds a way to get on base with an advanced approach, geared for contact. He capped off a stellar freshman campaign by being named a Freshmen All-American, while providing positional versatility at second base, first base and the outfield. With a full-time move to center field as a junior, he continued his unselfish approach at the plate and providing needed leadership for one of the nation’s top-ranked teams. His inclusion on this roster will be more important than meets the eye.

Eddie Eisert
Versatility is key in a best-of-seven series and North Carolina State commit Eddie Eisert brings just that. A switch-hitting infielder with the ability to step on the mound, he will bring much-needed toughness and grit to this lineup. With a prototypical third basemen’s build with athleticism to play up the middle, Eisert uses a high baseball IQ to always be in the right spot. His approach at the plate continues to advance with projection for more power. The x-factor will be when he steps on the mound to potentially close out games. Eisert exudes that bulldog mentality, filling up the zone with downhill angle up to 89 mph and developing slider. Do not be surprised to see him on the bump closing out a series win.

Aaron Sabato
Power is the name of the game and this hulking draft eligible sophomore has plenty of it. Many have seen Sabato’s prodigious power live but few recognize the patience he displays from game to game. Utilizing him as either a first basemen or DH will allow for regular at-bats in this lineup. During his prep days, Sabato starred in Perfect Game events for 5 Star National while showing what was to come when he stepped on campus. He hit .343 with 25 doubles and 18 home runs to burst onto the college scene as a freshman. Sabato got hot late and was well on his way to another power packed season in 2020, cementing his draft stock as a late first day pick. His accolades include ACC Freshmen of the Year and the threat of him going deep every time he steps to the plate will be a welcome addition to this lineup.

Patrick Bailey
Catching may be the single most important spot on the field during a seven-game series and the Mid-Atlantic Region has one of the very best amateur backstops in NC State’s Patrick Bailey. Coming out of high school he was a 37th round pick of the Minnesota Twins despite ultimately making his way to college. A keen eye at the plate and power from both sides is his calling card, hitting .288 with 10 home runs in his sophomore season. Bailey, a well-built backstop, displayed online, accurate throws when needed and the early returns from the shortened 2020 season were as expected with Bailey solidifying himself as an early first day pick.

Zack Gelof
Another versatile infielder with athleticism and energy, Gelof was off to a loud start this season for the Virginia Cavaliers. During his prep days with Tri State Arsenal, he provided key hits, stellar defense and ultimate positional versatility. After hitting .313 as a freshman, Gelof was off to a torrid start in 2020. With a sweet righthanded stroke, he looks to have added more strength as evident by already eclipsing his 2019 home run total. His advanced approach allows him to hit anywhere in the lineup, providing much-needed depth to win any series.

Jack Bulger
One could wonder why Bulger is not the starting catcher for this squad, since he surely has the resume to do so. The 2019 PG All-American Classic participant is an athletic backstop with power potential at the plate. Excelling in Perfect Game events is somewhat of a forgone conclusion with Bulger, hitting a robust .412 in 170 at-bats. The combo of Patrick Bailey and Bulger will surely shut down the running game in any game and should help neutralize the opposing team in any series.

Lorenzo Carrier
When talking about the first state and baseball, Carrier should be the first name that comes to mind. Blessed with an uber projectable frame at 6-foot-4 and plenty of upside in multiple facets of the game, the University of Miami commit was easy to include on this team. Carrier’s two-way ability has produced loud performances at Perfect Game events thus far, amassing a .453 average in 95 at-bats with the propensity to go for extra bases. Coupled with fastball up to 92 mph, it is easy to see why he can provide exciting moments in helping his team to the series win.

Joe Mason
Hitting .388 with 15 doubles and 12 homers are welcome numbers to any lineup. Couple that with exceptional leadership, a hard-nosed attitude and a chip on your shoulders and that is the exact reason to include Mount Olive’s Joe Mason on any roster in a seven-game series. Mason parlayed his All-American 2019 season into an eye-opening summer in the Northwoods league, where he hit .306 with eight home runs. The Division II product has put his name on the board for major league scouts and should be a tough out for any pitcher in a best-of-seven series.

Bobby Seymour
This team having a middle of the order bat like Seymour is already a big advantage and the reigning ACC Player of the Year gives this lineup big time confidence in the ability to score runs in bunches. He was off to a solid start in the 2020 season after a 2019 in which he led the NCAA with 92 RBI while also hitting 20 doubles and nine home runs. He is a mature hitter with a patient approach and rarely misses when he unloads. His ability to produce runs from the lefthanded batter’s box will not be ignored by opposing teams and the eye popping 135 career RBI for Wake Forest over 129 career games, make him a focal point in this lineup.

Maxwell Costes
A lineup that has Seymour and Costes hitting back-to-back will be as feared as much as any other tandem in this series. Costes is a strong, high waisted, and intimidating figure as he stands in the box, possessing so much power and the ability to change the game with one swing while carrying an offense for a seven-game series. His 15 home runs as a freshman in 2019, coupled with 47 walks tells the story of how many runs he could potentially produce. The 2020 season was going “alright” as he was hitting .432 with four home runs and 27 freebies in just 15 games this spring. In a format like this exercise, Costes could put up serious fireworks!

Bryce Jarvis
Duke’s Friday night ace took a big step forward in 2020, simply dominating opponents in the early stages before the season was cut short. The righthander uses a fastball in low- to mid-90s to attack hitters, while mixing in three well-tunneled off-speed offerings for swings-and-misses. In just 27 innings in 2020, he amassed some video game-like numbers (0.67 ERA and a 40:2 K:BB ratio). Jarvis has shot up draft boards with his early season success and having him available for three potential starts is exactly what is needed in a winner-take-all series.

Nick Swiney
Neutralizing lefthanded hitters is a big key to winning a series and having this lefty will surely help. The North Carolina State Friday night guy was off to a great 2020 campaign. After some mixed results in his first two seasons, Swiney threw 28 innings while striking out 42 batters and amassing a miniscule 1.29 ERA. The lefthander works in low-90s with his fastball, while using his signature changeup to disrupt hitters’ timing. The key development in Swiney’s success has been the refinement of his curveball and the ability to handle an entire lineup with that addition. He is the lefty all pitching staffs need to get through a lineup multiple times.

Carmen Mlodzinski
After missing most of his sophomore season due to injury, Mlodzinski made big waves with an outstanding performance during the 2019 Cape season. The stuff is loud, working into the mid-90s with his fastball and more consistent command. The uptick in velocity and consistency has also helped the sharpness of his secondary pitches. A strong start to the 2020 season and his lasting impression on scouts over the summer have vaulted Mlodzinski into first round consideration. He will be that high-octane starter that every team needs to win games in a best-of-seven series.

Joshua Hartle
Another lefty on the staff, Hartle’s stuff could ultimately be used in a variety of ways. The tall lefthander creates an extremely tough angle with plus command and some devastating off-speed offerings. He lives in the upper-80s with deception and exceptional command to all quadrants. The x-factor are the put-away off-speed pitches that create many swings-and-misses during an outing. No stranger to success in Perfect Game events, the young prospect has thrown 37 1/3 innings while posting a 1.70 ERA. Hartle will be deployed in a starting role for this team, with the expectation of a win against any lineup that comes his way.

Noah Skirrow
Fresh off an all star summer season in the Cape , Skirrow continued the confidence with a great start to his 2020 campaign. In 23 innings before the stoppage, the workhorse righthander had posted a 1.96 ERA. Working in the low-90s with his fastball while topping out at 96 mph, he has shown the ability to pound the strike zone and work into the late innings. You could see multiple starts or even him pitching in high leverage late innings. Skirrow’s willingness to take the ball in any situation is a key component to this team’s success.

Jake Berry
With a long series, lefthanded options are surely a luxury to have. Why not include a 6-foot-10 lefty that creates awkward at-bats for any hitter that steps into the box? Berry brings ultimate determination and moxie that is needed when facing high-level hitters. The stuff plays in the upper-80s with extreme downhill angle and a swing-and-miss changeup. Being deployed in a swing role on this team could ultimately prove to be the deciding factor in multiple wins along the way.

Hunter Parks
Getting length from your starts is an important factor in a seven-game series, Florence Darlington’s Hunter Parks will be tasked with just that on this team. The tall, lean righthander has tons of projection left while working in the 90-94 mph range with ability to spin his breaking ball. Parks was off to a great start in 2020, throwing 21 innings before the stoppage and posting a 0.43 ERA. Rotation depth is key to winning any series and this junior college product would provide just that.

Mikey Tepper
Getting your teammates to always play hard behind you is essential and Mississippi State commit Mikey Tepper has that type of infectious energy.  At Perfect Game events in 2019 the righthanded pitcher threw 15-plus innings while striking out 26 batters and he put up those numbers competing at the PG National, 17U WWBA National Championship, and the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter. He only surrendered four total hits and did not give up an earned run thanks to a quick arm a fastball that reaches into the mid-90s with a true downer, swing-and-miss curveball.  A guy that wants the ball, in big spots, is exactly what will be required in a format like this.

RJ Petit
Petit, the first true reliever on this team, has plenty of experience in closing games. The 6-foot-9 righthander is an intimidating figure whenever he steps on the mound. With a fastball into the mid-90s and ability to put away hitters in high-leverage situations, he will take the ball at the end of games for the Mid-Atlantic squad. Fresh off an all-conference selection as a freshman at Charleston Southern in 2019, Petit was ready to show scouts exactly what to expect from him for the 2021 MLB Draft.

Alec Burleson
Rounding out the roster is Golden Spikes, John Olerud (two-way) and college All-American candidate Alec Burleson. He would provide late inning matchup nightmares both at the plate and on the mound. The strongly built outfielder/first basemen will be asked to fill multiple roles on this team and he was off to a great start offensively in 2020, hitting .357 through 17 games while making four starts on the mound for East Carolina. An integral part of Team USA’s Collegiate National Team’s wins over Cuba and Chinese Taipei, Burleson brings big game experience and leadership.

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 64

What Do Barry Zito, Justin Verlander, Trevor Bauer, and Dallas Keuchel All Have in Common? By Ron Wolforth | Texas Baseball Ranch® | PG Arm Care Take a second and think about the question posed in the title before you read on. Four Cy Young Award winners. Four of the most decorated pitchers of their generation. What's the common thread? The first answer is obvious… they all won the most prestigious individual award in pitching. Most of you probably got there immediately. The second answer is less obvious… they all trained at the Texas Baseball Ranch® at some point in their development. Interesting, maybe, but not the point of this article. The third answer is the one I really want you to sit with, because it has direct relevance to your career right now: they all move completely differently. And they all attack hitters completely differently. Don't rush past that....

Sheffield, ranked 121 and committed to Virginia, is a super polished left-handed hitter with left side of the infield projection long term. The swing is tension-free with loose wrists and he generates easy bat speed with already present power to the pull side. This blast came inches away from being a home run and hitting a ball that far at Terry Park stadium is a significant shot. Sheffield also tripled in his second game of the weekend at...

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 65

The Insidious Lie That Hurts Pitchers Thep Most How many of you have ever had a terrible outing and afterward couldn’t really explain what went wrong? And how many of you have ever had a great outing and couldn’t explain what you did differently either? That gap between what is happening and your awareness of what is happening may be one of the most important gaps in player development. Closing that gap has a name. It is called metacognition. In simple terms, metacognition means thinking about your thinking. It is the ability to understand how you learn, how you perform, how you respond under pressure, and how you make adjustments when things are not going your way. For a pitcher, that matters because no matter how good your coach is, he cannot stand on the mound with you. Your coach cannot take the ball with the bases loaded, two outs, and the best hitter in the league...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: May 20

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
There is a reason the preseason pick to win it all rarely does. College baseball's postseason is a gauntlet — double elimination, best-of-three’s, then a full World Series format — and the team that looks unbeatable in February has to prove it again in May against opponents who have had just as long to get ready. Plenty of programs have entered the tournament as the obvious favorite and gone home early. It happens every year. Nobody should be shocked when it does. Top-ranked teams flaming out in regional weekends happens so many times it has become its own genre of schadenfreude Which makes this particular moment worth noting. The Perfect Game preseason picks to win the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III national titles — Tennessee Wesleyan, UT Tyler, and the University of Lynchburg — are all still alive heading into the final rounds. All three...

Coppy's Corner: May 21 POY Deep Dive

John Coppolella

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.   Co-Player of the Week: Carson Tinney – University of Texas  As a Notre Dame alumnus, it pained me to see Tinney transfer from the Golden Dome to the University of Texas after an All-American sophomore season for the Irish. He’s picked up in Austin right where he left off in South Bend and is currently hitting .321 AVG, 20 HR, .475 OBP / .695 SLG / 1.170 OPS on the 2026 season. It’s plus right-handed power and a plus arm; with the numbers I have found indicating that Tinney has erased more than half of attempted base stealers over the past two seasons of college baseball. Tinney threw...

Best of the Best Event Preview

In simplistic terms, the Best of The Best tournament is an absolute gauntlet as seemingly every game brings a playoff game atmosphere. Coaches must strategically map out their pitching to ensure they can get through Pool Play while also making sure they have arms to make a deep playoff run. Each and every age group is loaded with the best teams, composed of some of the best players that travel baseball has to offer. The 9u & 10u age groups will respectively have 9 out of the Top 10 Teams within the latest PG National Team Rankings participating in the event. At 9U, LTP-Reign will look to hold on to their #1 ranking but will have plenty of competition with the likes of ZT National Prospects and HTX-Wildcatters 9U looking to take over that #1 spot. In the 10u age group, Elevate National will look to fend off plenty of talent with #2 ranked Kaos National, East Cobb Astros and ZT...

May 19th Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Carson Tinney, C, Texas  The Texas Longhorns just finished off another stellar regular season and are heading to Hoover for the SEC Conference Tournament as the No. 2 Seed this week.  To secure their 2nd place finish, they had to sweep Missouri at home last weekend and did so in large part to the power bat of Carson Tinney.  The 6-4/240 catcher from Castle Pines, CO transferred to Austin after two sensational seasons at Notre Dame and has thrived in his draft year.  In the 3-game set, Tinney collected 7 hits in 13 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, with a double, 3 home runs and he drove in 10 runs all told.  With some of the most prodigious power in the college game this year, Tinney is now slashing .321/.695/.473 with 10 doubles an incredible 20 home runs and 54 RBIs while playing in the most spacious ballpark in the...
