No. 7 Oregon 8, Illinois State 5 (Thursday)

The Oregon Ducks are defined by their talented and all-lefthanded weekend starting staff, led by ace Cole Irvin and followed by redshirt sophomore Matt Krook and true sophomore David Peterson. That trio is 2-0 on the year with a collective in 38 (out of 63 total) innings and cumulative 1.42 ERA.

The back end of the staff is anchored by closer Stephen Nogosek who has a win and three saves already in his four appearances to go along with a ridiculous 10-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in just 5 1/3 innings.

There are plenty of other talented arms on the staff looking to make an impact and one of those made his first collegiate start last Thursday as the Ducks opened a four-game set at home against Illinois State.

Isaiah Carranza, built long, lanky and still plenty projectable at 6-foot-5, 180-pounds, started off tentatively as he looked like what he was: a freshman making his first start. He worked off a fastball that sat at 87-90 mph and touched 91 that got on hitters and was effective down in the zone. He mixed in a 78-81 split-finger with downer action and occasional cut. His breaking ball is a bit slurvy in the low- to mid-70s but it has the potential to become a true power pitch the more Carranza grows accustomed throwing it.
