Friday Recap: Raiders, Frogs win in Houston
(Texas Tech/Houston, TCU/Louisiana notes, video)

No. 25 Arkansas 5, Rice 2

The third and final game of the Friday slate of the 2016 Shriner’s Hospital for Children Houston College Classic featured yet another quality pair of starting pitchers. Rice’s Jon Duplantier and Arkansas’s Dominic Taccolini squared off in front of at least 50 evaluators from MLB organizations, including numerous crosscheckers and directors.

Duplantier was of particular interest, as the junior missed all of last season due to injury. Last weekend he came out of the gates strong and allowed just one run while striking out five in six innings of work. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Duplantier has the large, long, broad-shouldered frame that evaluators covet. Although he’s already sturdily built in both his upper and lower-halves there is still some slight room for further muscle mass as he continues to mature.

Aside from the body and overall athleticism, it is easy to see why Duplantier is in the consideration for the early rounds of the 2016 draft. He came out of the gates firing in the 92-93 range early, and sat in the lower-90s for much of his start, even touching 95 mph a couple of times in the first two innings. His heater has solid late life and finish below the knees.

While Duplantier’s fastball command isn’t currently the greatest, he did get into a solid rhythm in the early and middle innings, generally keeping the pitch in the bottom portion of the strike zone. He pitched well for much of the game, but clearly tired and lost feel for his delivery and overall sharpness of stuff in the seventh inning, which he could not finish. Still, the overall performance was very solid and it was encouraging to see that he could throw strikes with both of his secondary offerings.
