Batting Practice Highlights

8/16/2020

Daniel McElveny (2021 SS, Chula Vista, CA) has good strength in his 6-0/180 body, especially in his lower half, which drives a nice line drive swing with plenty of present bat speed.  He creates plenty of back spin and carry to the middle of the field and projects future power.

Isaiah Pruitt (2021 OF, Lancaster, CA) has an aggressive right-handed swing approach and showed his quick hands, bat speed and power potential well.  He looks to pull the ball and has plenty of intent in his swing.

Jace Avina (2021 OF, Sparks, NV) is another very aggressive right-handed hitter who creates bat speed and attacks the ball with intent.  He's a Nevada commit.

Will Matuszak (2023 SS, Los Angeles, CA) has a young athletic build with plenty of time and room to get stronger.  He has a loose and easy swing that's just going to keep getting better with physical maturity.

Konrad Bohnert (2021 SS, Carlsbad, CA) proved himself a high-level two-way prospect over the weekend but we can't forget that he's a primary shortstop with good right-handed bat speed and a very accurate barrel.

Tate Shimao (2022 SS, Honolulu, HI) is a quick twitch athlete with fast hands to start his swing.  He stays very short to the ball and makes consistent hard pull line drive contact.

Chase Valentine (2021 SS, Phoenix, AZ) is very slender at 5-10/150 but there's lots of hidden strength that comes out when he swings the bat.  He drives the gaps with some carry and has a very accurate barrel that showed in games as well.

Caiden Wilson (2022 3B, Pasadena, TX) is a young right handed hitter with good present strength that translates well into bat speed.  He was very consistent in his timing and squared up almost every swing.

Karson Bowen (2022 C, Anaheim Hills, CA) was one of the stronger players at the event and has the ability to take the ball deep.  He sinks into his strong hips well and looks to drive the ball with some lift.

Green vs. Orange Game Highlights

8/16/2020

Will Matuszak (2023 SS, Los Angeles, CA) connected for the loudest hit of the game for Green as they were able to plate a couple in the second inning. A righthanded hitter, Matuszak went the other way and split the right-center field gap, showing some carry off the barrel as well as strength at contact.

Ethan Felix (2021 C, Redondo Beach, CA) countered in the bottom of the second inning for Orange, barreling up a hard piece of contact of his own as he stayed short to the ball and lined a hard shot over the shortstop’s head for a double.

Justin Smith (2021 RHP, Las Vegas, NV) is a primary righthanded pitcher who is currently uncommitted and shows an arsenal that’ll play at the next level. He was up 86 mph with his fastball and worked down in the zone while showing both a slider and changeup around the zone.

Joshua Carlson (2021 C, Moreno Valley, CA) recorded a two hit performance in game two, grabbing a pair of singles which included one to his pull side in his second at-bat. Along with the stick, Carlson also worked an inning on the mound and topped out at 82 mph.

Ethan Swidler (2022 C, San Diego, CA) and Jackson Kemmerer (2023 OF, Trabuco Canyon, CA) both provided some offense for the Green team as well with RBI singles, accounting for half of the team’s runs on the day.

Navy vs. Orange Game Highlights

8/16/2020

Grant Smith (2023 RHP, Phoenix, AZ)  is an impressive arm out of Arizona who ran his fastball up to 90 mph and did so with relative ease. Still only 14 years old, the 6-3 Smith worked around the zone well and mixed a slider up to 81 mph to help pick up XXX strikeouts. He maintained 85-88 mph on his fastball throughout, working to the bottom of the zone and also picked up a single through the right side.

Nathan Beckley (2021 C, Aliso Viejo, CA) put a quality swing on an inner half fastball from Smith, pulling the barrel in to send it back up the middle, jumping off while showing no problem handling velocity. He finished the day going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

Gabriel Watson (2022 RHP, Hewitt, TX) ran his fastball up to 88 mph and came out attacking hitters with a fastball that offered big cutting action. Along with the velocity, he also spun a quality slider up to 79 mph and turned over a 77 mph changeup. He ran a 6.79 and threw 94 mph from the outfield with a 91 mph exit velocity earlier in the showcase.

Shai Robinson (2022 SS, Olympia Fields, IL) showed off his skills on both sides of the ball during the game for Orange. A primary shortstop, Robinson showed off soft, twitchy hands fielding the ball with sound actions and a good arm across before picking up an infield single, showing an aggressiveness on the bases.

Caleb Nieman (2023 1B, Peoria, AZ) took the mound for the Navy team and threw the last inning, running his fastball up to 85 mph. Listed 6-4/215, Nieman showed both a slider and changeup around the zone and projects well on the mound.

Green vs. Navy Game Highlights

8/16/2020

Konrad Bohnert (2021 SS, Carlsbad, CA) may be listed as a primary shortstop but he showed real potential on the mound. Already committed to San Diego State, Bohnert was up to 90 mph on the mound with a quick arm and pounded the strike zone, mixing in a slider up to 80 mph with short, tight bite.

Chase Valentine showed well on both sides of the ball, first making a nice play on the charge at shortstop where he showed soft hands and enough arm to make the throw across his body. He also picked up a line drive single before coming around to score the first run of the game.

Andrew Dusablon (2020 RHP, Palmdale, CA) got the start for Green on the mound and topped out at 90 mph in his first inning of work, showing a quick arm with life to his arm side. He mixed both a changeup and slider for strikes, showing nice shape on the slider. He also picked up a double in his first at-bat to center field.

Dylan Shipman (2021 RHP, Fountain Hills, AZ) had a nice day at the plate for Navy, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles which included a hard line drive single over the head of the shortstop. He also stole a bag.

Ethan Swidler (2022 C, San Diego, CA) put a nice swing on the ball in his lone at-bat, sending a line drive single crisply back up the middle. He also pitched an worked a quick two innings, topping out at 83 mph while getting some early contact.

Derek Bohnert (2021 3B, Carlsbad, CA) showed his arm strength across the diamond making an impressive throw across from behind the third base bag with solid carry across the diamond. He also picked up a single in his lone at bat which he sent back up the middle.
