The Prospect League continued its trend of growth during the 2021 season, as it saw a major expansion into new markets with the addition of the Johnstown Mill Rats (Pennsylvania), Alton River Dragons (Illinois), Burlington Bees (Iowa) and Clinton LumberKings (Iowa), bringing the number of total teams from 12 to 16. To add to the excitement, they saw the highest draft pick in League history, as former Lafayette Aviator and 2019 Prospect League All-Star, Trey Sweeney, was selected by the New York Yankees with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.

The Cape Catfish took home the 2021 Prospect League Championship after defeating the regular season champions, the Lafayette Aviators, in a best of three series. The Catfish have had a short but wildly successful stint so far in the Prospect League, making it to the Championship in each of their two seasons and compiling an 81-39 record.

The League’s Roland Hemond Pro Prospect and Starting Pitcher of the Year went to the Pistol Shrimp’s Ryan Eiermann, who compiled an 8-1 record with a 2.12 ERA and 109 strikeouts over 68 innings pitched. Burlington slugger Jackson Jones took home the Mike Schmidt Player of the Year award after hitting .295 over 57 games and leading the League in home runs and doubles with 18 and 17, respectively. The Prospect League also gives out the Galen Woods Fireman of the Year (given to the League’s top reliever), which was awarded to the Hoots’ Anthony Klein, who held opposing batters to a .125 average and amassed a 0.81 ERA over 33 1/3 innings pitched.
