PG Draft: Jupiter Preview

Jupiter has long been one of the best opportunities for draft eligible players to make an impression and this year’s field should be no different. With an elite collection of prospects all competing on the same fields, the event provides a valuable opportunity for players to establish themselves against some of the best competition in the class. This week’s WWBA World Championship could be a pivotal week for several prospects looking to make an impression and elevate their draft stock.
Ahead of the event, the draft team each highlighted a sleeper prospect (someone who is currently not ranked in our board) to watch, as well as a current member of our Top-100 who could make a significant move up the rankings. Keep an eye on these names throughout the week as they look to make an impact and force their way up the board on our next update.

Top-100 Risers

LHP Jake Ivey, Canes National 18u/New York Mets Scout Team

The Texas lefty currently sits at No. 97 on our Top-100 and that is already starting to feel low. An outstanding showing in Jupiter could cause the Arkansas commit to shoot up the board significantly. The profile checks a lot of boxes. Ivey features a durable, yet projectable, 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame. The fastball gets into the mid-90’s and explodes out of the hand. There is feel for two distinct breakers and changeup to round out the mix. It’s starter upside and a strong showing in a tournament like the WWBA Worlds to cap off his summer/fall circuit would solidify an already enticing profile. -TH

SS Juan Diaz, Franklin Scout Team/BTD

Diaz offers a unique package of quick-twitch athleticism and present strength that aren’t typically seen in prep middle infielders. A switch hitter, the IMG Academy product operates from a medium frame with experience at multiple spots defensively. His carrying tool is an elite ability to run, giving him a prime chance to stick up the middle. In the box, Diaz starts slightly spread with high hands before utilizing an inward leg load. He fires through an accurate and impactful barrel that does extra base damage from both sides of the dish. Last circuit, the Hialeah, Florida native posted elite-level contact and chase rates, proving the quality of his hit tool. While the profile is still hit over power, there is a well-rounded skill set offensively with quick hands and the ability to turn doubles into triples via his legs. With a strong showing in Jupiter, Diaz could find himself climbing up boards while establishing himself as a favorite amongst organizations. -RM

SS Trip Ostergard, Canes National 18u/New York Mets Scout Team

Ostergard has had a quality summer and been a bit of a riser on boards. He is looking to cement that jump and then some down in Jupiter this week. An athletic shortstop with the foundation and skills to stick there, he is a right-handed hitter with an aggressive approach that makes a good bit of contact in the zone. He’s a twitchy, explosive athlete that is going to impress in that aspect, paired with a frame that has a nice pathway to holding 10-15 pounds more of good muscle as he continues to grow. He’s got a quick first step and good feet overall at short paired with an arm that should get to plus in due time. He can throw from different angles and on the move as well. In the box, he’s got plus barrel control with a true ability to make an abundance of hard contact. He swings a good bit and will expand the zone on all offerings, but he gets the barrel to it and really limits the swing and miss. It will have to tone down over time, but the natural hand-eye ability leads me to believe it will work itself out. Power won’t be a massive part of this profile, and getting to 40 game power at peak would be a nice win here. As a runner, Ostergard grades out as above average. Pro evaluators will be following him closely this entire event with the Canes. -MA

OF Stephen Bobo, East Coast Sox 2027 Franchise

Our scouting staff got several looks at Stephen Bobo throughout the summer circuit, and I personally walked away a huge personal fan after seeing him at the WWBA and Area Codes. The Vanderbilt commit has always had the ingredients of a high-contact and athletic top-of-the-order type bat, but the combination of performance, speed and defensive ability he showed this summer made the overall player package considerably louder. Offensively, he slashed .417/.491/.604 across 19 PG games with just an 8% whiff rate. The left-handed swing is compact and efficient, with a controlled gather and quiet hands that allow him to consistently find the barrel. There’s very little wasted movement, and he showed more offensive punch than the slash-and-run profile that was lightly attached in underclass looks. There's enough hand strength and bat speed to create gap impact and there were several flashes of some pull-side juice this summer. His hit tool sets a strong foundation, but there’s a quality offensive ceiling here. Then there’s the athleticism. Bobo ran a 6.41 at PG Natty this summer and that easy plus speed shows in the OF along with his instincts and a genuinely impressive arm. That speed plays on the bases and gives him a chance to remain in a premium defensive spot long term. After what he showed this summer, Bobo has gone from an intriguing prospect profile to a legitimate potential Day 1 draft candidate. Jupiter is another opportunity to see him continue building that case -JC

Unranked Sleepers

OF Jake Cueto, BPA

Cueto is slowly becoming one of my favorite “sleepers” in the class, albeit he might not be as much of a typical “sleeper” anymore. The Florida prep outfielder checks off a lot of boxes. He’s athletic on both sides of the ball. He hits left-handed and possesses high contact skills. There is some sneaky power there as well. He runs well with the ability to range in the outfield and shows strong instincts on that side of the ball. I think the profile being so well-rounded will allow Cueto a lot of opportunities to impress evaluators down in Jupiter. He can make an impact on defense, at the plate, and on the bases. I expect him to have a big week and really jump on the radar in a significant way. -TH

SS Blake Ragsdale, FTB Phillies 2027

A super athletic and fluid defender, Ragsdale heads to Jupiter with hopes of a strong offensive showing. The TCU recruit works from a medium right-handed frame with considerable length and room to fill. Ragsdale projects to stick at shortstop thanks to quick-twitch actions and a strong throwing arm with considerable range to both sides. In the box, the Illinois native starts even at the base with high hands, employing a direct inward leg load pre-launch. Ragsdale utilizes a quick set of hands that fire an impactful barrel through the zone. He profiles as a hit-over-power player at the dish, with remaining projection that could lead to more juice. Overall, Ragsdale has the ability to play a premium position at a high level with an intriguing hit tool, making him a guy to watch this week in Florida. -RM

1B Jalen Jacob, Canadian Premier

Jacob is a Perfect Game All-American and Kansas State commit, yet I still think he is being undervalued both in the public and professional space as a draft prospect right now. The prep first base demographic has admittedly not been a hotbed recently, as there have been eight total selected this decade. It’s an understandable demo to have precaution with, as you are totally buying into the offensive profile when you pay a prospect here. As for Jalen Jacob, I am convicted on this bat and would pay good coin for it if I was a decision maker. He can bop, as the raw power is real and he gets to game power frequently. It is all fields impact and carry, with an innate ability to backspin the baseball. He’s got baseball twitch that translates to big bat speed, and pairs that with a quiet left-handed setup in the box. What impresses me the most about him though is the bat to ball ability and approach. He has a very measured, calculated approach in the box, consistently displaying quality swing decisions paired with damage ability and good contact rates in the zone. I’m convinced of the ability to hit for average and juice at the big league level. Looking elsewhere, he is more than capable at first base with good feet around the pillow and hands to match. He’s shown plenty to like and project on in front of the Canada PG staff time and time again, and will look to do it stateside. He will still be 17 years old on draft. -MA

SS Easton Morgan, West Coast Ghost National

Easton Morgan is going to be an interesting MIF follow this week and I’m going to bet specifically on the B2B skills standing out here. He’s hitting .402/.493/.646 at PG events this year with just a 9% whiff rate, and the left-handed swing shows a lot to like whether its the adv. hand quickness, compact barrel path and his ability to work the barrel at quality angles. There’s a real feel for contact here, paired with excellent strike-zone discipline that gives him a clear top-of-the-order offensive profile that evaluators should take notice of. There’s also more pop than you might expect, with multiple balls leaving the yard this year especially from the left. The frame is on the smaller side, but there’s clear athleticism that shows up throughout the profile. His 6.65 60-yd at PG National is the easiest indicator of the mentioned athleticism and that quickness translates quite noticeably to the defensive side of things, where he’s looked polished at shortstop with sure hands and rangy actions in all directions. The move to Southern California should bring some additional notoriety with a Trinity League season ahead, but the traits are already starting to generate traction with evaluators and I’m expecting more of that in Jupiter. -JC

WWBA Underclass Scout Notes: Days 1-2 | Day 3 Hudson Covington (2028 Aliso Viejo, CA) has had himself a weekend at the dish, hitting an even .500 going into Championship Monday including a perfect 3-3 performance in the 2nd round of playoffs for TB SoCal. In just his 5th PG event, the uncommitted prospect is certainly making a name for himself with plenty of offensive tools to like. From the left side, Covington keeps the path direct and repeatable with a pull side & middle of the field approach displayed. He flashes high contact tool and does a great job of putting something in play with two strikes, limiting the swing/miss in the stroke with evident control of the barrel. WWBA Underclass Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Richard Cruz Iii (2028, Chandler, Ariz.) has had a good weekend offensively, driving balls to the gaps with consistency. The barrel accuracy and fast hands stand out as the swing is super direct to contact and he can whip it with consistency. Strength is clear for the coastal kid standing at 6-foot, 195 pounds with power generated from the lower half. Starting from a slightly crouched, quiet base, McRae displays dangerous barrel whip and to say he impacts it with authority would be an understatement. It’s safe to say he can put...
