National HS Rankings: May 5

Todd Gold         Jheremy Brown

It was a relatively tranquil week in the National Top 50, with most of the top ranked teams taking care of business and maintaining a relative status quo. The biggest exception was a surprising loss in district tournament play by previous No. 4 Sarasota (Fla.) whose season comes to a disappointing end to their season. Other victims of surprise upsets in Florida district playoffs include former Nos. 26 and 34 West Orange and American Heritage. On the other side of the coin Hagerty pulled an impressive upset of their own by knocking off Sandalwood in 10 innings in a game where the opposing starting pitcher was first round MLB Draft candidate Sean Reid-Foley. Hagerty (Fla.) re-enters the rankings this week following the impressive feat at No. 32.

The most interesting non-movement in this week's update comes from the two-game series split between No. 27 Clovis (Calif.) and No. 36 Buchanan (Calif.) where each team won at home to keep both teams in the same spot this week. But the biggest story in Northern California comes from No. 19 Elk Grove, who capped off a 3-0 week by winning the second annual Boras Classic in decisive fashion, knocking off the south section champion Temecula Valley 6-1. To get to the title game Elk Grove gave new No. 3 St. Francis their only loss in the past month, a stretch which has seen the Lancers go 11-1.

Postseason play is underway in the state of Texas and so far the nationally ranked representatives have taken care of business. The team that came closest to an early exit was No. 35 Arlington Martin, who had to battle back to win the best of three series after dropping the opener. History tells us that there will be plenty of upsets as the postseason progresses and the subsequent updates should see heavy turnover in Texas over the coming weeks.

Puyallup (Wash.) finished off the regular season with a perfect 20-0 and moves up to No. 23 this week as they get set to begin postseason play.

Other new additions this week include: No. 48 Fountain Valley (Calif.), No. 49 Orangewood Christian (Fla.) and No. 50 Mosley (Fla.).
