A few years ago a young high school kid came into our building looking for a job. Zach Schreiber was a nice young man who was an outstanding student at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, IA. He also wanted to play in the PG scout Leagues on the Weekends.

We scouted Zach and talked to several people who had seen him play. He was a RHP around 6-foot tall with a pretty good arm. First time we saw him he topped out at 83 mph, but was very wild. People who had seen him before told us he was always wild and they didn’t think he’d ever pitch much in High School.

Our people noticed that young Zach had a beautiful arm action that was lightning quick and smooth. He also had a great feel for the breaking ball. So we let him in the league and worked with him on the side in the building.

Zach started getting better, but still had a long way to go. Then just about the time of the draft that year Zach started touching 90 mph. It was obvious that he was starting to put it all together, but it was late and only the smaller colleges were calling. Zach being an outstanding student caused us to call our friends at Duke. We told them we have an outstanding young man who is going to throw real hard and help them.

Duke took a chance on the young right hander who is now throwing very well. His first couple years were spent as a hard throwing reliever/closer and just as he did in High School he is coming on strong at the end. Here is a story that covers Zach Schreiber’s most recent outing against North Carolina State.

Duke senior RHP Zach Schreiber pitched Duke to a 3-1 victory over No. 17 N.C. State on Saturday afternoon with a complete-game effort against the Wolfpack at Doak Field in Raleigh. Schreiber led the Blue Devils to victory as he won a pitching duel with N.C. State senior standout Vern Sterry.

Schreiber (3-2) was sharp throughout, working a complete-game five-hitter. He allowed one run, walked three and struck out a career-high eight Wolfpack batters. He allowed just three runners to reach scoring position, stranding two of them at second base. The Wolfpack did not have a hit until the third inning and did not have a runner reach second base until the sixth. Schreiber held the Pack's Matt Camp hitless in four at-bats, snapping his hitting streak at 15 games, and did not allow a hit to David Hicks in two at-bats, stopping his hitting streak at 10 games.

"Zach Schreiber was outstanding today," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said. "He did a great job. He threw a complete game and only threw 112 pitches. He was awesome. Hopefully Greg Burke can come out tomorrow and do the same thing.

"That was a good win," Hillier continued. "Zach was terrific. We played good defense. And Michael Golom had a big triple."

The Blue Devils got to Sterry (3-1) for three runs in the first three innings, and despite strong pitching from the right-hander, handed him the loss. Sterry pitched eight-plus innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. Sterry, who had walked just one batter in 26.0 innings this season entering the game, walked three Blue Devils and struck out five. The loss snapped Sterry's school-record winning streak at 14 games.

Duke got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second inning. Junior Bryan Smith walked, Sterry's first walk in 93 batters, and with two down, freshman Corey Whiting singled to center to put runners on first and second. Sterry then committed an error, attempting to pick Whiting off first base with no one covering the bag. Whiting wound up on second base, and Smith scored from second on the play. Sophomore Michael Golom then knocked in Whiting with a triple into the right-center-field gap to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.

Duke went right back to work with an unearned run in the top of the third. With one out, sophomore Javier Socorro reached on an error by David Hicks at first base, junior Tim Layden walked and sophomore Brian Hernandez singled to left to load the bases. Smith then singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Socorro and give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead.

While Sterry struggled early, Schreiber was in command from the beginning. The Wolfpack finally got on the scoreboard board in the bottom of the seventh. Hicks led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. With one away, Lee Mezistrano reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners and Marc Maynor hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Hicks and slicing the lead to 3-1. Schreiber then got Jake Muyco on a fly ball to center field to end the threat.

The victory by the Blue Devils evened the three-game series between the two teams at a game apiece. Duke now is 11-11 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The Wolfpack is 15-5 and 1-1. The series will conclude with Sunday's contest at 2:00 p.m.
