Junior College Top 50 Teams
Photo: Perfect Game
2012 Junior College Notebook: Louisburg College
With
a 10-2 record, Texas’ Howard College has already lost more games
that it did in its magical 2009 season, when it went 68-1 and stormed
to a Junior College World Series title, but the Hawks have retained
their No. 1 ranking atop Perfect Game’s first in-season ranking of
the nation’s Top 50 Junior College teams.
Howard
has a roster deep in professional-level talent and has stung the ball
at a collective .402 clip while posting a 2.59 ERA through its first
dozen games.
Former
Nebraska lefthander Logan Ehlers (2-0, 0.53) and Texas righthander
Clayton Crum (2-0, 0.00) have been the team’s two most dominant
arms, while holdover shortstop Paul Hendrix (.465-2-19), a Texas
Christian recruit, has sparked the team at the plate. But the Hawks
have struggled in the field and the team’s defensive deficiencies
directly led to the team’s two losses.
Still,
Howard has been good enough to date to retain its pre-season ranking,
unlike No. 2 Chipola (Fla.), which is just 11-10 and has slipped to
No. 39, and No. 3 Central Arizona (11-6), which has dropped to No.
17.
The
biggest mover in the JC ranks since the start of the 2012 season has
been North Carolina’s Louisburg College, which is 17-0 under new
coach Mike McGuire and has jumped from No. 38 in the pre-season to
No. 5.
