DRAFT 2010

SCOUTING REPORTS
Third Round Supplemental (113-115)

113. TORONTO BLUE JAYS
MARCUS KNECHT, of, Connors State (Okla.) JC
SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1): Knecht was an unsigned 23rd-round pick in 2008 out of an Ontario high school, but chose not to sign then with the Milwaukee Brewers in favor of attending college at Oklahoma State. But after getting just 12 at-bats for the Cowboys as a freshman, he elected soon after the 2009 season to transfer down the road to Connors State. That decision could pay off handsomely for Knecht in this year’s draft as his combination of speed and power is a rare commodity. Knecht established his superior speed last fall with a 6.54-second clocking in the 60 on scout day, and his power has steadily emerged this spring as an elite, viable tool. He hit a resounding .471-15-49 for a Connors State team that won 29 of its first 31 games, and took over the No. 1 spot in the national junior-college rankings. It was apparent that a change of scenery and a chance to play were all that Knecht needed for his immense raw talent to surface, but a lot of improvement in his game actually occurred last summer when he returned to the Ontario Blue Jays, a high-profile travel team. Knecht was thought to be a second- or third-rounder when he returned to school last fall, but his talent has blossomed to such a degree this spring that it wouldn’t be out of the question for a team to pop him in the first round in June—especially in a draft light on power bats. Like many Canadians, who are typically further behind on the development curve, Knecht just needed a second year south of the border to get his feet firmly planted. He was in over his head a bit when he was at Oklahoma State, and might have tried to do too much. His bat is his best tool. He has always had the ability to hit for average and power as he has a smooth, confident approach and easy swing. As he started using the other side of the field more consistently in the fall, he started to take off at the plate. His arm has become a playable tool, though may still limit him to left field. Knecht is the player most responsible for the fastest start in Connors State’s rich baseball history, but he is actually just one of six Canadians (all from Toronto) on the Cowboys roster. The Toronto-to-Connors State pipeline is no coincidence, and directly attributable to the relationship that Connors State coach Perry Keith has established through the years with former Oklahoma scout Dan Bleiwas, who now runs the powerful Blue Jays travel program that corrals a bulk of the best high-school talent from in and around the Toronto area, and helps to distribute them to U.S. colleges. Knecht previously played for the Blue Jays while attending an Ontario high school, as did his Connors State teammate Peter Bako, a previously-obscure player who emerged as a legitimate prospect after just a single season at Connors State and was drafted in the 15th round last year by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both Knecht and Bako have committed to play at North Carolina State in 2011, a scenario that is growing increasingly unlikely as Knecht continues to elevate his draft worth.—ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/15): Knecht has maintained his hot pace through the spring, carrying a .453 average with 24 doubles, 21 homers and 81 RBIs into post-season play. With his hometown Toronto Blue Jays holding four of the first 50 selections in the draft, there is increasing speculation that the Jays will tap Knecht with one of the picks, particularly since new scouting director Andrew Tinnish once served as a pitching coach for the Ontario Blue Jays, and was the person most responsible for luring Knecht into that program.--AS

114. CHICAGO WHITE SOX
THOMAS ROYSE, rhp, Louisville
SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1): Louisville has a number of players that could be scooped up in the top 10 rounds of this year’s draft, with Royse the favorite to be picked first. The 6-foot-5 righthander has been the team’s ace all spring and posted a 6-1, 2.84 record with 50 strikeouts in 51 innings over his first eight starts as a rapidly-improving Louisville program sought to duplicate the school-record 47-win seasons that it posted in 2007 and 2009. With a fastball that is a steady 90-93 mph and the impressive depth on his slider, Royse has solid stuff, but it’s his command, advanced feel for pitching, ability to miss bats with his downward arm plane and the deception in his delivery that most impress scouts. Royse seamlessly transitioned into the Friday job atop the Cardinals rotation this spring. Although he was a top Louisville recruit on the heels of winning 14 games and posting a 1.01 ERA in leading Dunbar High to a Kentucky state title in 2007, Royse was buried in the Cardinals bullpen as a freshman. He went 4-0, 4.80 with 51 strikeouts in 51 innings. He also began his sophomore season in a relief role, but soon transitioned to a starting job before being lost for the season with stiffness and soreness in his lower back. In 12 appearances (6 as a starter) in 2009, he went 3-2, 3.48 with two saves and 48 strikeouts in 41 innings. Though he didn’t play last summer while rehabbing his back, Royse was in top form to start the 2010 season and has done nothing but enhance his draft value with a strong performance this spring.—ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/15): Royse has only enhanced his value for the draft with a strong finish to the 2010 season, much as a surging 46-10 Louisville team has enhanced its prospects of a second visit to the College World Series. Through 14 starts entering the Big East Conference tournament, Royse was 9-1, 2.71 with 93 strikeouts and just 25 walks in 88 innings. Even with a fastball that has been a steady 88-92, topping at 93, scouts expect to see more velocity from Royse, but he gets good life on the pitch and continues to pound the strike zone with all his pitches.—AS

115. LOS ANGELES ANGELS
DONN ROACH, rhp, College of Southern Nevada
SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1):Roach was considered a potential top-5 round pick out of Las Vegas’ Bishop Gorman High in 2008, but a strong commitment to the University of Arizona caused him to drop to the 40th round (Angels) of that year’s draft. His one season in Tucson was less than memorable as Roach went 1-4, 7.84 in 41 innings, as questions arose about both his maturity on and off the mound. Those questions appear to have both been answered in a positive manner this spring after Roach elected to transfer to Southern Nevada for his sophomore season. With large crowds of scouts there every game to see his batterymate Bryce Harper and the rest of a talented CSN pitching staff, Roach quickly emerged as the team’s ace and was 8-1, 2.59 in his first 10 starts. Through a staff-high 66 innings, he topped the Coyotes with 80 strikeouts while allowing 45 hits and 17 walks. Roach has been pitching in the 90-93 mph range, topping out at 95-96 in each outing. His best pitch has frequently been his 77-81 mph curveball, which scouts consider a potential plus pitch. He also throws a straight changeup and an occasional mid-80s splitter.—DAVID RAWNSLEY
UPDATE (5/15): Roach has both solidified his status as the No. 1 starter on CSN’s ultra-talented pitching staff over the second half of the 2010 season, and positioned himself to become the first Coyotes pitcher drafted in June, a possible second or third-rounder. With a route-going five-hitter over Southern Idaho in the Region 18 tournament in mid-May, Roach stretched his record on the season to 11-3, 2.64 with 22 walks and 127 strikeouts in 95 innings. He had limited opponents to a .188 average. His win helped to propel CSN, the nation’s No. 1-ranked team at the outset of 2010, within a step of a berth in the Junior College World Series. Roach has left little doubt this spring that he is a vastly better pitcher than a year ago at Arizona, and it stems largely from changing his overhand arm slot at UA, to a more natural three-quarters angle. Almost overnight, Roach’s velocity jumped from 86 to 93, and subsequently peaked at 96. His fastball has also been down in the zone more consistently, and his 81-mph breaking ball has been a second above-average pitch. Roach’s impressive record would have been even better than it is, but he started the only game of the spring of 58 that CSN didn’t use wood, and an unprepared Roach was tagged for 11 runs and 11 hits in 3-2/3 innings of a 12-7 loss to California’s Cypress JC.—ALLAN SIMPSON

2026 MLB Draft Reports: 100-299 | 200-299 | 300-399 | 400-500 1. Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA R-R, 6-2/202, Chandler, AZ Previously Drafted: Never Drafted   Roch Cholowsky has consistently ranked at the top of the class throughout the cycle due to the safety and upside of the profile. Defensively, he is a plus defender at shortstop with soft hands, consistent actions, and quality range. Not only should he stick at the position long term, he should excel there at the next level. Offensively, there is a strong mix of hit and power potential from the right side of the plate. The swing is a bit unorthodox with a shorter finish, but Cholowsky consistently finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority to all fields. He has strong bat to ball skills with impact. He has walked more than stuck out during his collegiate career, giving him a high on-base ability. The run tool is the...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

Kinley Kitchens

On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...

He won Tournament MVP for his efforts. Physical left-handed frame with feel to hit to all fields. Utilizes the middle of the field as well as the opposite field efficiently. Should be a force to be reckoned with as he grows into some more power. Evan Rosales (2027, Houston, Texas) was dominant on the mound for HP 2027 Allen. Went five shutout innings over the weekend, surrendering just one hit and two walks while striking out ten. Fastball lives 83-87 with some carry. Curveball is a heavy 12/6 downer at 69-74.
