Balance of Saturday Capsules, Sunday Pool Play Capsules and Scores

Thunder Baseball 12, Florida Hawks 2 Thunder Baseball scored 3 runs in the first inning, 4 in the second and 5 in the third to pull away from the Florida Hawks in a 12-2 rule rule shortened game. 8 Thunder players scored runs as the team rapped out 11 hits. C Anthony Orr had 2 doubles and scored 2 runs. CF Matt Sheely, one of the fastest players at the Championship, had 2 hits and also scored 2 runs. 2B Michael Matthews and 1B Jordan Gluck also had 2 hits. RHP Dan Morlini went 4 innings to pick up the win. Atlanta Blue Jays 7, Perfect Game USA Black 6 The Atlanta Blue Jays scored 5 runs in the first inning, then had to put up another run in the bottom of the seventh to edge Perfect Game USA Black 7-6. RF Chris Johnson drove in the winning run with a bases loaded fielder’s choice. The Blue Jays stroked 6 hits in the opening frame, all singles, to drive the rally. 2B Nick Wenderoth singled to start the game and later scored and drove in the 6th run with a bases loaded walk. Wenderoth also 1B Will Palmer had 2 singles. Kraig Benson, brother of Pirates RHP Kris Benson, threw the first 5 innings for the Blue Jays. C Thomas Halvorson led the Black attack with 3 hits and 2 runs. SS Corey Ashner had 2 hits and 2 Rbi for the Blck, while 3B Kris Garcia also had 2 hits. Ralph Ball 10, North Stars 0 Ralph Ball out hit the North Stars 10-1 and almost duplicated that in the score in a 10-0 victory. LF Luis Alvarez slammed 2 triples for Ralph Ball, driving in 2 runs and scoring 2 to pace the offense. C Kevin Mirabal had 2 hits out of the leadoff spot, while 2B Zoey Angulo had 2 hits and scored 3 runs. SS Chris Lopez also scored 3 runs. RHP Danny Desimone pitched a complete game in the 6 inning run rule shortened game to get the win. Chet Lemon’s Juice 3, All Star Baseball Academy 1 All Star Baseball Academy pitchers Josh Phelps (4 innings) and Ryan Wood (3 innings) held the high scoring Chet Lemon’s Juice (27 runs in 2 previous games) to only 3 runs but it wasn’t enough to avoid a 3-1 defeat. 2B Nate Samson drove in 2 runs on a 2 out 2nd inning single to provide all the runs the Juice needed. Samson also scored the team’s third run after a walk, infield out and a pair of wild pitches. LHP Justin Edwards threw a complete game for the Juice, scattering 4 hits and striking out 9. 2B Matt Catania drove in All Star’s only run with a 3rd inning single. Beach Boys 6, Perfect Game USA Gold 6 The Beach Boys scored 6 runs on 1 hit and 13 walks to manage a 6-6 tie with Perfect Game USA Gold.. The only Beach Boys hit, a 1st inning single by 2B Mark LaDuke, didn’t even figure in the scoring. PG Gold scored more conventionally, knocking out 9 hits. DH Michael Burke had 2 hits and scored 2 runs to pace the Gold offense. 2B Marcelo Gattamorta had a 2 run single. Perfect Game USA Sarasota 11, Perfect Game USA Black 2 Perfect Game USA Sarasota, scoreless for the first 3 games of the tournament, erupted for 11 runs in an 11-2 4 ½ inning run rule victory over Perfect Game USA Black. Sarasota scored 4 runs in the first, highlighted by a 2 run single by SS Matt Heller. CF Kyle Orser keyed Sarasota’s 6 run 4th inning with another 2 run single. 14 year old 2007 RHP Gus Schlosser threw 3 scoreless innings to pick up the win, touching 85 mph occasionally. 3B Joey O’Donnell and CF Brett Boggs, son of former big league star Wade Boggs, each had 2 hits for PG Black. Ralph Ball 5, East Cobb Astros 5 Ralph Ball and the East Cobb Astros played to a 5-5 tie in a 6 inning time limit shortened game. Ralph Ball DH and leadoff hitter Kevin Mirabal had a single and double and scored 2 runs. C Luis Alvarez and SS Chris Lopez each drove in 2 runs. The Astros, who threw 4 different pitchers in setting their rotation for the playoffs, were paced by SS David Cunningham, who had 2 hits and scored a run, and 2B Torre Langley, who singled, walked and scored twice out of the leadoff spot. Perfect Game USA Green 4, Hit Master Tigers 1 0 LHP Marlon Pascual, with 7th inning help from RHP Jake Pulliam, shut out the Hit Master Tigers 1 4-0. RF Nick Nordgren (Norway, Iowa) drove in the first two Green runs with a single in the third inning and later scored on a passed ball. C Ryan McKenzie had 2 of the Tigers 4 hits, including a double. Central Florida Red Raiders 7, Gulf Coast Sharks 0 RHP Jose Hernandez threw a 3 hit shutout, striking out 11 without allowing a walk, to lead the Central Florida Red Raiders to a 7-0 win over the Gulf Coast Sharks. 1B Bryan Bennett shared the player of the game honors with Hernandez, going 4-4 at the plate, including 2 doubles, and scoring and driving in 2 runs each. 3B Todd Waller had 2 hits and 2 Rbi’s, C Joey Manbodh had 2 hits and SS Jason Cutlip had a 2 Rbi double for the Red Raiders. Georgia Stars 12, Perfect Game USA White 1 Perfect Game USA White pitchers plunked 6 Georgia Stars hitters with pitches and walked 7 more, enabling the Stars to stretch 4 hits into 12 runs in a 12-1 victory. No Stars batter had all three (H, HBP, BB) but 2B Rhys Roberts and C Chris Trappy were each hit twice. SS Michael Garland had a double that drove in 2 runs, along with the ubiquitous HBP and scored 2 runs. RHP Mason Heller pitched 3 innings to get the win in the 5 inning rule rule shortened game, allowing only 1 hit. RHP David Christensen pitched the final two, allowing no hits and an unearned run. IBC Baseball 10, South Florida Stars 2 IBC Baseball scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to break open a tight game and run rule the South Florida Stars 10-2. LHP Preston Hale and 1B Jack Murphy each had 2 Rbi singles among IBC’s 5 hits during the inning. SS Jared Waits had a hit in the eventful 6th inning and also had an Rbi triple in the 3d inning. Hale picked up the victory with 5+ innings of solid work for IBC. RF Danny Laperna had 2 Rbi singles for the Stars. Team Ontario 5, Perfect Game USA Navy 2 LHP Jordan Anderson scattered 4 hits over 7 innings to lead Team Ontario to a 5-2 victory over Perfect Game USA Navy. Anderson struck out 6 and induced 11 fly ball outs in recording the win. C Morgan Kielty drove in the first 2 Team Ontario runs with a 2 run double in the 2nd inning, then later scored after singling in the 4th. DH Chris Valeriote had 3 hits for Team Ontario. 3B John Diebolt had 2 hits for the Navy. Hit Masters Tigers 2 8, Perfect Game USA Orange 5 (Note: Games that have no capsule are due to a team not filing a complete roster with the WWBA by the roster deadline) Miami Thunderstorms 5, Beach Boys 1 (see note above) X-Team 8, Perfect Game USA Black 1 The X-Team defense played errorless ball and pitchers Steve Young (5 innings) and Anthony Francis (2 innings) only walked one hitter, 2 keys for the X-Team throughout the Championship, as X-Team defeated Perfect Game USA Black 8-1. X-Team outhit PG Black 10-5, with CF Jason Ten Eyck getting 3 of the hits. DH Stewart Munro had 2 hits and scored 2 runs, while RF Steve Fenton had 2 hits also. DH Sergio Morales hit a 2 run home run in the 7th inning for X-Team. Team Florida USA 5, Atlanta Blue Jays 1 RHP Caleb Graham retired the first 13 Atlanta Blue Jays hitters in order before hitting a batter, then left after 6 shutout innings and allowing only 1 hit. Graham struck out 9 without a walk, using a mid-80’s fastball, curveball and change up. Team Florida put together a hit batter, 3 straight doubles and a single in the 4th inning to score 4 runs. 1B Aaron Miller had one of those doubles that drove in a run and also added 2 singles. C A.J. Wimsberger drove in a run with a 4th inning double and also drove in the other Team Florida run with a 2nd inning single. CF Andrew McCutcheon also had 2 hits for Team Florida. Excel Blue Wave National wasn’t leaving Hoover empty-handed.  At least, that was the message head coach Wes Henderson gave his team.  After a summer filled with strong performances but without a tournament title to show for them, Excel Blue Wave National entered the 2026 15U Perfect Game Hoover Classic with one more opportunity to finish the season the way they wanted.  This time, they left no doubt.  Excel Blue Wave National defeated East Coast Sox 2029 Victus, 12-0 in the championship game, combining a balanced offensive attack with a strong performance on the mound to secure their first tournament title of the summer.  “It’s been a special group,” Coach Henderson said. “They fought really hard, and they played really well this summer, and this is the first championship that we’ve been able to bring home. After a long summer of baseball, Excel Blue Wave National had one final opportunity to end it the way every team hopes to.  Together, having fun, and as champions. Excel Blue Wave National closed their summer with a 13-9 victory over Excel Blue Wave American – Morrison to capture the 2026 16U Perfect Game Hoover Classic championship. In a game that required contributions throughout the lineup and seven innings of competition, the Excel Blue Wave National relied on the same qualities and approach that had carried the group all summer. The team spent their early weeks learning where players fit best, building chemistry and searching for the combination that would allow them to play their best baseball. Evan Brand (2027, Acworth, Ga.) has been solid at the plate all summer and did not slow down late in the summer. This week, Brand was able to hit just under the .700 mark and tallied three extra base hits, including a homer. The switch hitter has a fluid barrel path with plus feel for the barrel to all fields. The lower half also moves with some rhythm, and the switch hitting ability with the accuracy to the barrel provides plenty of intrigue. The middle infielder is committed to Georgia Tech. The recently named PG All-American ran the fastball up to 96 mph and sat 92-95 mph throughout the outing. A slider at 80-82 mph was lethal. It tunnels well off the heater and gets uncomfortable whiffs often. Waite features a 6-2, 205-pound frame that moves extremely well. The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. Co-Champs Crowned at 15u WWBA

Following a jam-packed week of competition in East Cobb, Georgia, at the 15u WWBA National Championships, East Coast Ghost '29 National and eXposure 15u National were crowned co-champions after inclement weather prevented the championship game from being played. Both clubs completed the tournament undefeated behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances on their way to the title. "Couldn’t be more proud of this group," East Coach Head Coach Mike Valerio said. "The amount of work that went into this moment is something no one sees. The countless team and individual practices, workouts, mindset calls and time put in makes this moment even more special. The summer hasn’t gone the way we wanted it to, up to this point, but the boys never let it affect them. We just always said we need to get back to our team standard, which is “make the routine play”....
