Co-Champs Crowned at 15u WWBA

Following a jam-packed week of competition in East Cobb, Georgia, at the 15u WWBA National Championships, East Coast Ghost '29 National and eXposure 15u National were crowned co-champions after inclement weather prevented the championship game from being played. Both clubs completed the tournament undefeated behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances on their way to the title.

"Couldn’t be more proud of this group," East Coach Head Coach Mike Valerio said. "The amount of work that went into this moment is something no one sees. The countless team and individual practices, workouts, mindset calls and time put in makes this moment even more special. The summer hasn’t gone the way we wanted it to, up to this point, but the boys never let it affect them. We just always said we need to get back to our team standard, which is “make the routine play”. This team was a special one. Not just because of the talent, but more importantly who each individual kid is. We always talked about achieving something like this- so I knew we were ready for the moment when it presented itself. Love these boys and I couldn’t be more proud. I really couldn’t."



Hitting was definitely the name of the game throughout the week for East Coast as the team managed to record 7.8 runs per game, including an astonishing 20-run performance in their second pool play contest.

Bryson Auten helped lead his squad's offense through bracket play, racking up 13 hits, 15 RBI, and 4 homers across the tournament, which left the talented third baseman ranked No. 3 in regard to the week's performances.

"I feel special after competing against so many great players all week long," Auten said. "I’m even more proud of my team’s accomplishments and was glad to help them win a bunch of huge games versus top-ranked national teams. I put in a lot of hard hours this winter with Coach Valerio and it feels great shining in the biggest tournament of the summer."

East Coast faced an early 3-0 deficit in their first game of bracket play, something they had not been used to prior, but Auten helped propel a 4-run rally in their opening frame at the plate with a 2-RBI double to begin the comeback.

"When I stepped into the box, I was looking for my perfect pitch, which is something elevated and fast in the beginning of the count." Auten said. "I got exactly what I was looking for and took advantage of it with a level swing. It really felt great to come up in a big spot when your team really needs you. It sets the tone for the remainder of the game."

Although East Coast's bats were sure to catch the attention of many fans, dominant pitching performances played a major role in the team's success. Cale Lichtenberg entered many games in relief for his team in bracket play and was flat out impressive, totaling 11 innings pitched while allowing just 7 hits and 0 earned runs.

"It felt really good to finish the summer how we did," Lichtenberg said. "As a pitcher coming into those big games and shutting them down is what I live for. My team and I both know with the game is on the line I’m at my best. Something that motivates me in these moments is knowing I have my whole team behind me and it’s on me to perform and they will handle the rest."

Jake Abrams was another arm responsible for his team's championship honors, tossing 10 scoreless frames while striking out 14 opponents, including a stellar performance in the round of 32. Abrams pitched recorded 17 outs in the bracket play matchup while allowing just 2 hits and 0 runs to help his team move on to the next round.

"It's a tremendous honor to receive MVP pitcher for this prestigious tournament," Abrams said. "It feels awesome to be able to go out and compete for my teammates and play against the best competition in the country. To give my team a chance to win means a lot to me and the organization I play for."

"No team is more deserving than this group," Coach Valerio said.

eXposure had a similar journey to the championship, steamrolling their competition in pool play before claiming many gritty wins throughout bracket play. The commanding performances helped the team land the No. 2 seed, and eXposure never looked back.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group,” eXposure Head Coach Dylan Bosheers said. “We were coming off a week where we didn’t play our best, but the guys did an incredible job of flushing it, refocusing, and getting back to playing the way we’re capable of. It took everyone to get through this week. Several guys stepped into big moments and embraced roles they hadn’t been asked to fill all summer, and that’s exactly what it takes to make a run in a tournament like this. We were down in the first inning of every bracket play game, yet every single time we found a way to battle back and give ourselves a chance to win. I think that says a lot about the character, toughness, and belief this group has. I’m proud of every one of them."

eXposure third baseman, Rhys Rosh, earned top batting honors for the entire tournament with 16 total hits, including 10 extra base knocks and 3 home runs to go along with 14 RBI.

"It’s definitely humbling," Rosh said on being named co-champions. "We played some really good teams all week, so I’m grateful for how things went. I try to trust my preparation, stay focused on the next pitch, and do whatever I can to help my team win. I’m really proud of what we accomplished together."

One of the most memorable moments of the week came when Rosh crushed a go-ahead home run in the round of 16 to help erase a 4-0 deficit and send his team to the quarterfinals.

"Honestly, my first thought was, that felt really good," Rosh said on his home run swing. "Then it was, remember that feeling for the next at-bat. There was still a lot of baseball left, so once I got back to the dugout, my focus was on the next inning and finding a way to help us finish the game."

Zane Miller helped set the tone for the week while on the mound with an impressive outing in eXposure's first pool play game to go along with an 8 scoreless inning performance across tournament play.

“There’s definitely lots of things that flow through your mind in those outings and moments, but being able to observe and filter through those feelings and thoughts is what is really important," Miller said. "Knowing that I have teammates and coaches around me that trust me completely and have my back fuels me with even more intensity. Before I step onto the mound I remind myself that my stuff can beat any hitter out there, and that I have worked so tirelessly to prepare that I deserve to go out there and trust myself to perform to my best ability. Then finally, once I toe the rubber my mind goes quiet, I focus on my breathing, and I compete with the skills God has given to me. From then on it’s all heart.”

Fellow pitcher, Knox Johnson, was another key factor in his squad's path to victory by sending his team to the semifinals following an impressive 7 inning, 1 run outing.

“Our team was most definitely on a hot streak, and the defense was outstanding behind me, couldn’t have done it without them,” Johnson said. “Honestly I haven't pitched that much, so during the moment I was just focused on beating the batter in the box, I knew my defense was going to have my back so I had full faith in them! I was going to do anything for that team, they are all like brothers to me. I am overly grateful for my teammates, coaches, and the exposure organization that god has put in my baseball journey!”

"It will definitely be a summer I will never forget as a coach," Coach Bosheers said.

While the highly anticipated championship game did not end the way both teams would have hoped, the accomplishments of both East Coast Ghost '29 National and eXposure 15u National should not be overlooked. Each team put together an outstanding week, finishing undefeated and capping off its season as 15u WWBA National Co-Champions.

WWBA Sophomore Scout Notes: Day 1 Rhys Jones (2029, Mc Lean, Va.) was absolutely dominant on the bump to start off day 2 hanging an impressive 10 strikeouts in 5 innings. Running the heater up to 84 with arm side run and the breaking ball got swings and misses. The strike percentage stayed right over 55%, and he carried a no hitter into the 6th. Easy arm action with a high 3/4 slot and controls the move down the rubber.  Jevan McMenamy (2029, Fargo, N.D.) was all around solid today tallying two hits, an rbi, and a walk. In the box he works to the middle of the field in the approach and can elevate to all fields. Coils deep into the back hip and works through contact with strength.
