Wilmington Day 3 and 4 Summary

In “Wilmington, Day 2”, I apologized in advance for the anticipation of missing the son of a past or present Major Leaguer. I knew it would happen. Among the last names at Wilmington are Williams, Diaz, Hernandez, Banks, Moreland, Smith, Wilson, Wynn, Adams, Ballard, Horton, Stephenson, Jones, Rogers, Marino, Gonzalez, Collins, Brown, Kelly, Davis, Grant, Nagy, Taylor, Johnson, Bryant, Darwin, Herndon, Lee, Welch, White, Walker, Moyer (Jaime IS old enough), Farrell, Green and Campbell. Names of former big leaguers all, if you grant Dan Marino temporary membership., but none that I’m aware of that actually had his diapers paid for by a big league paycheck. There was even a Dombrowski in Wilmington. However, I overlooked “Stapleton”, despite noting that Josh Stapleton had 5 hits the first two games. Josh’s dad is former Red Sox infielder Dave Stapleton. I’m also told that Josh is recovering from a football related shoulder surgery and is about 65%, which would account for his relative lack of arm strength. His bat is obviously not affected. As games are now finished, here are three “Top 10” lists from the four days of workouts and games. No, not the “Top 10 Prospect” list, although that will be forthcoming in a day or two, along with a Top 50 list later. These lists are easier to build and less controversial. Trust me on the “controversial” part in advance, there is absolutely no consensus on the Top 10 prospect list at this event. Top 10 Pitching Velocities RHP Mark Rogers (95-99, mph): There is already a disagreement about what Rogers actually threw. The “public” gun readings were 97 and 99 on one pitch, but many scouts and coaches behind the plate only saw 95 mph. Whichever was the case, Rogers’ stuff was electric. RHP Jay Rainville (95-97): Again, there is a discrepancy about what the high reading was. Only this time, the public guns topped out at 95 and other guns registered up to 97. It’s kind of silly to quibble about who threw harder, but it is a little ironic that the public guns are judged too high on some pitches and too low on others. RHP Andrew Carnigan (95): Carnigan actually caught more innings than he pitched, but there was no questioning his arm strength. RHP Joseph Bauserman (94): Bauserman is forsaking hometown Florida State to throw footballs for Ohio State, something that Bobby Bowden can’t be happy about. He won’t be a running quarterback, that’s for sure. RHP Nick Adenhart (94): There isn’t much question that Adenhart has plenty more in his arm than 94 mph. His arm action is as smooth and quick as it gets and he isn’t nearly as strong as the four pitchers above. RHP Josh Fields (93): Fields was the hardest pitcher to hit in Wilmington, facing only 9 hitters in 2 appearances and striking out 7. He had 92-93 whenever he wanted it. RHP Blake Johnson (93): I’ve seen Johnson throw four times this summer and this is easily the best that he’s thrown, especially in maintaining his velocity. RHP Gabby Hernandez (92): Hernandez, a Miami native, is probably the best pure projection of the top velocity pitchers. It would be surprising if he didn’t move up a couple of notches by next spring. RHP Patrick Bryant (92): Bryant is similar to Hernandez in many ways, a tall, loose right hander who didn’t maintain top velocity very consistently but who is very projectable. 7 Pitchers touched 91 mph. The only left hander who reached that level was Sean Doolittle. The Class of 2004 is not especially strong, at least at this time, in strong armed left handers. Top 10 60 Yard Dash Times SS Justin Upton (6.38): Just as with the pitching velocities, there is some controversy about Upton’s running time. The official posted time was 6.27. There isn’t much question that the 15 year old Upton can run that fast, he’s been timed quicker on the laser timer this summer. Just think of what he might run when he’s a bit older. But every scout I talked to had him 6.38 to 6.46. Even players in the stands were openly talking about how the listed time wasn’t correct. The suspicion was that the “official” time was based on first movement, not the drop of the hat, which generally makes about a .10 difference in a time. Laser times are also generally about .10 quicker than the standard “drop of the hat” method. OF Patrick White (6.56) 3B Brandon Guyer (6.62): Guyer’s time is particularly impressive, given his 6-1, 215 lb. physique. SS Brett Bartles (6.71) 2B Tyler Barnett (6.72) SS Josh Johnson (6.75) SS Walter Diaz (6.76) OF Ryan Strauss (6.77) OF Michael Taylor (6.78): Is Guyer’s time impressive? Taylor is conservatively listed at 6-5, 235. Wow! OF Warren McFadden (6.78) SS Josh Horton (6.78) Web Gems, The Top 10 Defensive Plays 1. 2B Ramon Corona: With 2 out and a runner on third in the bottom of the 9th inning of a tie game, Corona dove and stopped a ground ball up the middle, got up and gunned the hitter out. End of Game (games can end in ties at the end of regulation in Wilmington). The irony is that Corona struggled earlier in the week at shortstop, making three errors in one game, but was both spectacular and consistent in two games at second base. 2. INF Josh Donaldson: Donaldson made too many outstanding plays at different positions to focus fairly on a single one. Perhaps his best was a diving stop of a grounder at third base and a throw to beat Upton by an eyelash. 3. 3B Brandon Guyer: Most diving stops are on balls low to the ground (i.e. the fielder is diving down, following gravity). Guyer made a head shaking, “He caught That!!” stab off his feet of a line drive above his head, landing shoulders first in the 5-6 hole. 4. SS Josh Johnson: Johnson had a whole game, as opposed to a singular play, on Friday. He had every conceivable ground ball hit to him; in the hole, up the middle and about 5 slow rollers and handled every one of them perfectly. Johnson’s hands were so smooth that it didn’t look like he had any doubt he’d pick everything cleanly. 5. 2B Cale Iorg: Just as Corona went up the middle to snare a ball with a diving stop, Iorg range far and deep into shallow right field to snare a grounder in the hole, get up, and make a strong throw. It wasn’t a game situation, but every bit as much of a full out effort. 6. RF Michael Taylor: In back to back innings, Taylor made plays so close to the infield that he essentially tossed the ball back to the pitcher afterwards. One was on a wind blown pop up that he caught at full speed on the edge of the infield behind first base. The other was a wild throw to first base that he somehow hustled over to retrieve and ran back to the infield. How often do you see the right fielder closer to the mound than the first baseman when the ball’s in play? Taylor also made several more conventional but impressive plays in right field. 7. CF Justin Upton: With 1 out and a runner on second in the top of a 3-3 9th inning tie, Upton used his speed to chase down a shallow fly ball, then threw on the run shortstop style to double a runner off second base. There aren’t many big league centerfielders who could close on a ball that quickly. 8. C Ty Pryor: Of all the catcher’s throws during the four days, Prior’s laser on the third day stands out. I didn’t get a time, but I bet it was in the 1.85 range, with 65 arm strength. Neil Walker and Joel Collins also stand out for some of their game throws. 9. RF Reggie Dixon: His routes weren’t the prettiest, but catching long, slicing hard hit balls from right handed hitters isn’t easy. Dixon caught two balls right over his head at full speed on the warning track. It didn’t look like he saw either enter his mitt, but he didn’t act surprised that he grabbed both, either. 10. UTL Ian Desmond: Most players play multiple positions in Wilmington, but Desmond say duty at four positions, third base, shorts

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

Following a jam-packed week of entertainment at the 17u WWBA Championships, the top nationally ranked program, USA Prime 17u National/Detroit Tigers Scout Team, faced off against Stacked Baseball 17u (No. 80 nationally) in the highly anticipated championship matchup as both teams looked to earn one of the most prestigious titles in all of travel baseball. Each talented squad entered the finale undefeated, but Stacked Baseball continued their dominance throughout the tournament, defeating the Detroit Tigers Scout Team 10-2 in mercy rule fashion to become national champions behind explosive bats and impressive pitching. Stacked Baseball was the overwhelming top team throughout the week as the WWBA Champions outscored opponents by an absurd 117-12 during their 11-0 run. “We got some talented kids, but we played against a little bit of Goliath over there,” Stacked Head Coach Mike...

17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4  Day 5 | Day 6 Shea Corona (2027, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showcased some loud stuff out of the bullpen for MLB Breakthrough Series 2027. The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. '27 SS Moises Gudino (FL) continues to stay red hot, working a long AB & cracking an oppo 2B on the 8th pitch. Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...

It seems that he gets bigger each time I see him, but the frame really works on both sides of the ball at 6-feet, 190-pounds. It’s athletic and the actions on both sides are extremely advanced. Sawyer took home MVP honors after finishing with nine hits, six going for extra bases including two home runs, nine RBIs and eight runs scored. It’s electric at...

Austin Lyons (2028, Cibolo, Texas) put on a display for Canes Southwest Prime 16U. Went 7-14 at the plate with a pair of doubles and triples, while driving in 13 runs. He won Tournament MVP for his efforts. Physical left-handed frame with feel to hit to all fields. Utilizes the middle of the field as well as the opposite field efficiently. Should be a force to be reckoned with as he grows into some more power. Evan Rosales (2027, Houston, Texas) was dominant on the mound for HP 2027 Allen. Went five shutout innings over the weekend, surrendering just one hit and two walks while striking out ten. Fastball lives 83-87 with some carry. Curveball is a heavy 12/6 downer at 69-74. North-south approach with a super steep release. Showed some really good feel for the zone and sequenced effectively to keep hitters off balance.
