Wilmington Day 2 Highlights

After the first two games of Wilmington, Day 2, the assembled scouts and coaches were in somewhat of a stupor. The organizers have thankfully spaced the games out enough so that there is time to eat occasionally, so it wasn’t a food induced stupor. Nor was it heat induced, as the weather has been actually pretty good for Wilmington. No, the stupor was caused by a general lack of interesting play on the field. Nothing really much was going on. The 90+ pitchers of the first day had gone into hibernation and there were far more broken bats than balls that reached the warning track. There were a couple of nice defensive plays, but have you ever noticed how great infield plays are usually made on the slowest runners? The fog was lifted very, very quickly during the first four innings of the third game, though. In fact, you could literally hear the buzz (seriously) a number of times from the stands. Even the players in the dugouts were looking out to catch a glimpse of the radar gun readings that are posted on the far end of each side of the batting screen. First up for the Red Sox team was RHP Jay Rainville (Bishop Hendrickson HS, Pawtucket, RI). The fans in New England have seen a great comparison to Rainville a couple of times: Roger Clemens. Rainville has a very similar build, listed at 6-3, 220 and rock solid strong all through his body. The arm action and delivery looked like Rainville had copied them directly from The Rocket; simple balance over the rubber, short abbreviated arm action in back and a quick, powerful short arm stroke forward. He was very polished in his ability to repeat it and throw strikes. Rainville’s first 2 pitches were 94 and 95, which got everyone’s attention very quickly. He only threw 2 innings and I didn’t see a pitch under 92, with plenty more 94’s and 95’s. Rainville’s curveball didn’t measure up to his fastball but it had some quality, 75 mph with a big, early sweeping break. When you’re geared up for 95, it’s a hard pitch to adjust to at any level. As impressive as Rainville was, the next Red Sox pitcher was perhaps even more so, sparking plenty of debate among the groups of scouts the rest of the game as to just who they liked better. Most of the assembled had never seen RHP Mark Rogers (Mt. Ararat HS, Orr’s Island, ME) previously. That can happen when you’re a baseball player from Maine. When his first 2 warmups were 91 and 94, the buzz started again. Two hitters stood out during Rogers 2 innings of work. After he struck out the first hitter with a nasty 78 mph hammer, Rogers evidently “felt it”. His first pitch to the next hitter was measured between 95 and 99 on the dozens of guns pointed down at the field. The gun with display down the 1st base line showed 97, the display down the 3rd base line showed 99. For me and a couple of the scouts I asked, it definitely looked faster than 95, I can tell you that. In 15 years of baseball, the only time I’ve seen 100+ live was in big league parks with guys like Billy Wagner and Mark Wohlers on the hill. 99 was an adrenaline rush. The second notable hitter was OF Michael Taylor (Apopka HS, FL), perhaps the best position prospect at the event. Taylor and his Marlins teammates had faced RHP Nick Adenhart in their first game and now were seeing Rainville and Rogers back to back, which is kind of unfair. At least I’m sure they think so. Taylor is an imposing physical specimen at 6-5, 235 and Rogers evidently noticed. His pitch sequence was 96, 95, 93, 2 hard curveballs, 93, 95. Taylor fouled off four straight pitches, including the two breaking balls, before eventually swing under the last 95. Great confrontation between two great prospects that showed well for both of them. Rogers gets his velocity from a lightning quick arm, one of the quickest arms you’ll ever see. He’s well put together at 6-2, 200 lbs but has plenty of room to add strength to his upper body. He doesn’t throw as smoothly as Rainville and had some trouble repeating his arm action and release point, particularly after his showdown with Taylor. One thing Rogers does have over Rainville, at least right now, is his curveball. He threw some plus to plus, plus breaking balls consistently at 77-78 mph. Some miscellaneous notes from the day: -- 2B/SS Josh Stapleton (UMS Wright Prep School, Daphne, AL) has 5 hits through his first 2 games, easily leading all player in that category. The left handed hitter has a nice compact stroke and has been hitting solid line drives to right field. -- OF Warren McFadden (Nova HS, Plantation, FL), long regarded as one of the top outfield prospects in the Class of 2004, had 3 hits Thursday, the only other player than Stapleton to enjoy a 3 hit game. -- Yesterday in this space a number of shortstops were mentioned. One was left out, or perhaps just overlooked for a day. SS Josh Horton (Orange HS, Hillsborough, NC) belongs in the top group. He ran a 6.7 60, smashed a couple of hits, including an opposite field double off the wall and showed quick and sure defensive actions. -- The only home run of the first 6 games belongs to SS Eric Campbell (Gibson Southern HS, Owensville, IN), which shouldn’t be a surprise. Campbell had 5 home runs in the recent WWBA Senior Championships, another wood bat event. -- It’s always entertaining to look over rosters for relationships with former Major League players, although it’s easy to miss a couple, too, so apologies in advance. Among them: SS Cale Iorg, son of former ML 3B Garth Iorg. OF Jordan Herr, son of 2B Tom Herr and brother of Braves minor leaguer Aaron Herr. SS Bobby Molinaro, son of OF Bobby Molinaro. 3B Tyler Jennings, son of Marlins Player Personnel Director Dan Jennings. SS Justin Upton, brother of Devil Rays 2002 1st rounder B.J. Upton. SS Josh Johnson, son of former ML’er Larry Doby Johnson. Also notable is SS-CF Todd Frazier, the star of the former Little League World Champion Tom’s River (NJ) team.

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4  Day 5 | Day 6 Shea Corona (2027, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showcased some loud stuff out of the bullpen for MLB Breakthrough Series 2027. The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. '27 SS Moises Gudino (FL) continues to stay red hot, working a long AB & cracking an oppo 2B on the 8th pitch. Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...
