With the All-Star Game completed, it's time to look at my preseason predictions of the major awards handed out and who should receive them at this time of year.
American League MVP
Preseason pick: Ichiro Suzuki, Seattle Mariners
Mid-way AL MVP: Brian Roberts, Baltimore Orioles
Roberts is having a huge season, and has tailed off at all since starting the season as hot as he did. He's leading the AL in batting (.345), in second in on-base percentage (.416) and third in slugging percentage (.591). The only thing working against Roberts is the fact that his teammate, shortstop Miguel Tejada, is also having an MVP-caliber season. Alex Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero and Manny Ramirez are also strong candidates. Ichiro just isn't having as good of a season, despite hitting .311, after setting the Major League mark for hits in a season a year ago.
American League Cy Young
Preseason pick: Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays
Mid-way AL Cy Young: Roy Halladay
My preseason gut feeling has paid off so far, as Halladay is putting up the best season across the board of any AL starter. The seasons that Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland have put together so far are nothing short of impressive, and in fact the entire White Sox starting rotation has put up very good numbers. Johan Santana leads the strikeout lead by a large margin, but Halladay is second in wins (12), tied for third in strikeouts (108) and first in ERA (2.41).
American League Rookie of the Year
Preseason pick: Jeremy Reed, Seattle Mariners
Mid-way AL ROY: Chris Young, Texas Rangers
Young, with eight wins and a 4.01 ERA, has pitched extremely well for the Rangers, a team that desperately needs pitching to complement their explosive offense. Jeremy Reed's season has been respectable, and keep an eye on Toronto's Aaron Hill if he continues to receive regular playing time. Scott Kazmir, Joe Blanton, Gustavo Chacin, Dallas McPherson and Tadhito Iguchi are a few more names to watch.
American League Manager of the Year
Preaseason pick: Alan Trammel, Detroit Tigers
Mid-way AL Manager of the Year: Ozzie Guillen
The White Sox first half of the season was nothing short of impressive, and you always have to give the credit to the manager when it seems as though a team is over-achieving. It should be noted that the White Sox have been carried almost entirely by their pitching, more so than their small-ball approach to offense. Alan Trammel and the Detroit Tigers are having a respectable season as well, although they have slumped somewhat lately.
National League MVP
Preseason pick: Albert Pujols
Mid-way NL MVP: Derrek Lee
If it weren't for Derrek Lee's amazing first-half, Pujols would get the nod here. Lee is among the NL leaders in every major offensive category, leading the way in batting average (.378), on-base percentage (.452), slugging percentage (.733), and hits (119) and is tied for first in home runs (27). The Cubs and their fans got a scare two weeks ago when Lee left a game with a sore shoulder, but that injury didn't stop from Lee from finishing the first half extremely strong.
National League Cy Young
Preseason pick: Roy Oswalt
Mid-way NL Cy Young: Dontrelle Willis
The list of NL Cy Young candidates is very long, and should provide the most interesting race of all of the major awards in the second half. If Roger Clemens, Roy Oswalt and Andy Pettite played for a better team, they all could be in the running. Chris Carpenter, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Jake Peavy are the next group of obvious candidates, but Dontrelle Willis gets the nod at this point in the season, tied for first in the league in wins (13) and he is tied for second in ERA (2.39).
National League Rookie of the Year
Preseason pick: Chris Burke
Mid-way NL ROY: Jeff Francis
Francis' teammate Clint Barmes would have run away with the midseason award had he not broken his collarbone, which effectively ended his season. Francis has pitched admirably for the Rockies, notching eight wins versus six losses. Francis' 5.16 ERA may not look the greatest, but you have to give him credit for keeping his composure pitching half of his games at Coors Field. NL rookie pitchers Kyle Davies, Tim Stauffer and Brad Halsey have also pitched well, and look out for a few young bats in Ryan Church, Wilson Betemit, Lance Neikro and Rickie Weeks.
National League Manager of the Year
Preseason pick: Phil Garner
Mid-way NL Manager of the Year: Frank Robinson
I missed on Garner pretty bad, but I did pick the Astros to win the NL Central to open the season. The Astros have shown to put together strong second halves in recent years, and have been playing better lately led by an impressive pitching staff, so don't count them out entirely. The Washington Nationals have put together the most impressive and surprising first half of any Major League team, although many people, myself included, thought they could be at least respectable. It will be interesting to see if they come back to earth somewhat or if their early success is legitimate.
