Braves Capture WWBA East Title

Photo: Atlanta Braves Scout Team (Perfect Game)
By the end of championship Monday, the Atlanta Braves Scout Team had done much more than win a title.

They had validated everything they believed they could become.

After an undefeated run through the 2026 PG East WWBA Championship, the Braves captured the 15U championship with an 8-2 victory, finishing off a dominant weekend that featured elite pitching, explosive offense, and contributions throughout the roster.

For coach Jed Douglas, the championship represented the results of months of practice, preparation, and a vision that finally came together.

“This is our first championship with this group,” Douglas said. “We finally brought it together and for the first time, everything seemed to work just as we designed it when we were building the team, and it was just beautiful this way.”

The Braves backed up that vision with one of the most impressive offensive performances of the tournament. After collecting 15 hits in a 15-2 semifinal victory, the Braves added 16 more hits in the championship game. The team finished the day with 31 hits across the semifinals and finals alone.

“We had 31 hits today, probably close to 60 hits over the weekend,” Douglas said. “These guys just really enjoy playing and they really meshed together this weekend.”

The championship game showcased the depth that made the Braves so difficult to beat throughout the weekend.

Daylen Woods turned in another outstanding performance on the mound, throwing a complete game while allowing just two runs and striking out seven. At the plate, Woods added three hits and a double. Harper Quang collected two hits, including a double and triple, while Tommy Medina continued to showcase his skills with three more hits.

The Braves’ offensive power was evident throughout the tournament. Desmond Ruffin finished as the top overall performer in the 15U division, recording 14 hits, 12 RBI, 11 runs scored, two home runs, and two stolen bases. Ruffin was also awarded as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player following his performance this past weekend.

Tommy Medina finished right behind Ruffin at second among all performers with 15 hits, 11 RBI, 10 runs scored, and six stolen bases. Other players such as Adam Kramer, Daylen Woods, Cohen Thompson, Javari Holley, Harper Quang, and Sam Ridley also ranked among the top 11 performers in the division.

Coach Douglas credits much of that success to the team’s disciplined offensive approach.

“They are patient at the plate,” Douglas said. “We don’t swing at junk. We try to wait and not swing at the curveball until we have to. We see that hot fastball, and we try not to miss.”

That approach paid off all weekend long.

“We were very disciplined at the plate,” Douglas said. “That created a lot of base runners and runs and hitter’s counts, and it seems to work for this group.”

While the offense drew attention throughout the tournament, the pitching staff was equally dominant.

Woods earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher award after opening the event with a no-hitter and continuing to set the tone throughout the week.

“It means a lot,” Woods said of bringing home the championship. “We are a new group, but I think we have a lot of potential and we are showing that.”

The right-hander credited confidence as a major factor in his success.

“It is really important to have established confidence,” Woods said. “Because if you don’t have it then, you can’t really do anything without it.”

Despite his individual accomplishments, Woods remained focused on the team.

“I am looking to build a better relationship with the team and just getting to know the guys better and being a better team, one of the top teams in the country!” Woods said.

The chemistry throughout the roster was evident in every interview following the championship.

“It means a lot because we are like brothers,” Sam Ridley said. “I had a fun time playing with them this weekend. It was fun winning with them.”

Ridley’s impact extended beyond his stats, which included seven hits, seven runs scored, five RBI, and two stolen bases during the tournament. He believes supporting teammates is just as important as individual performance.

“I am always trying to pick up my teammates,” Ridley said. “I make sure that I am there for them when they don’t perform well, so I can bring them up.”

That team-first mentality was echoed throughout the rest of the team.

For Tommy Medina, who finished the week as one of the tournament’s most productive hitters while handling duties behind the plate as a catcher, the championship represented proof of what the team could accomplish when everything clicked.

“It means a lot,” Medina said. “We have had a couple weekends where we have struggled, and this weekend we finally showed what we can do.”

The catcher also pointed to the complete team effort that fueled the Braves’ championship run.

“We were very good defensively, and our pitcher was on the mound throwing good,” Medina said. “The pitches we called, the locations, defense, like I said, just everything worked out good.”

Harper Quang, who delivered another strong offensive performance in the title game, embraced the opportunity to compete on one of the biggest stages of the summer.

“I just like to come out here and enjoy playing the game, meeting new people, and obviously competing on one of the biggest stages,” Quang said. “So it just means a lot to me.”

The skilled infielder also showed his willingness to do whatever the team needed, shifting from his natural shortstop position to third base throughout the tournament.

“I grew up playing third, so it was just going back to what I know and trusting my training,” Quang said.

As the final outs were recorded and the celebration began, the Braves had more than a championship trophy to show for their week in Hoover.

They finished undefeated. They claimed the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher award. They produced the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in Ruffin. They placed eight players among the top 11 performers in the division.

Most importantly, they proved what they were capable of when everything came together.

“Just continue to be what we are and what we do, and play to our strengths,” Douglas said.

For one unforgettable weekend in Hoover, that is exactly what the Atlanta Braves Scout Team did.

This weekend, 11 teams will take the field for the 2026 17U BCS Challenge, a three-day event that brings together programs from across the country for a full slate of pool play and bracket action. With games beginning Friday and a champion crowned Sunday, the format leaves little room for slow starts, making every inning important from the opening pitch. The field features a mix of established programs and rising teams. With so many evenly matched rosters, there’s not much separation heading into the weekend, which puts importance on pitching depth, defensive consistency, and timely hitting. Pool play will quickly determine seeding, and even one loss can shift a team’s path heading into bracket play. One of the teams expected to be in the mix is Hawaii Elite 2G 17U National, a group that is 6-3 overall and ranked as “Honorable Mention” on the Perfect Games...
