Down on the Farm: AL West

It’s the time of the year again (i.e. the off-season) for the annual PG Down on the Farm feature.  We identify a top prospect in each of the 30 Major League organizations with as much Perfect Game background as possible and delve into that PG history for some insight into his development as a prospect.  Some of them might be high profile, high draft pick, ex-PG All-American talents who fans have been long familiar with.  Others might be more obscure prospects who have significantly improved either in college or as professionals.  Note that players who have used up their rookie eligibility are not considered.

The idea isn’t to necessarily pick the best PG background prospect in each organization but the one who might be closest to the big leagues.  Sometimes that is the same player, other times not.



And there is plenty of variation among organizations in their quantity and quality of prospects, whether it be those with PG backgrounds or not.

Houston Astros  --   RHP Alonzo Tredwell

Tredwell was a very well-known prospect from early in his teenage years both as an over-sized pitcher and for his left-handed power at the plate.  He first appeared at Perfect Game event as a 15-year old at the 2017 West Underclass Showcase, where he received a PG 9 grade after throwing 81-84 on the mound with huge projection on his then 6-4/185 frame.

I first saw Tredwell at the 2019 PG Underclass All-American Games after his sophomore season and he was very impressive, hitting every check mark you’d want to see on a premium young pitching prospect, including his 6-7/225 frame.  I recall making the comment to another PG scout “Well, this kid is going to be an All-American next year.”  It was a pretty obvious observation, actually.  Here is the report filed after that event:

Extra tall well-proportioned build, could very well end up bigger when physically mature. Big flexible leg raise to start his delivery, H 3/4's arm slot, ball comes out of his hand easily with low effort, really gets extended well out front on release. Fastball topped out at 91 mph, velocity plays up and hitters took late and defensive swings against his best fastballs. Short biting slider that hitters didn't see well, developing change up. Command and raw stuff suffered from the stretch when his mechanics got rushed. High ceiling young athlete whose arm you can dream on. Left-handed hitter, hits from a spread and open stance, has leverage in his swing when he turns the barrel. Very good student, verbal commitment to UCLA. Named to the PG Underclass All-American Games Top Prospect List.

The All-American prediction didn’t come about, however, as Tredwell hurt his elbow before his junior season and underwent TJ surgery, costing him most of the rest of his high school career.  He ended up at UCLA, where he was outstanding out of the bullpen as a freshman (4-1, 2.11, 7 SV in 47 innings with only 6 walks versus 62 K’s) and solid as a starter as a sophomore (4-2, 3.57 in 9 starts/45 IP) before a non-arm injury ended his season.

As a draft eligible sophomore with a fresh arm and a high ceiling, Tredwell generated plenty of draft attention in 2023 despite only making nine starts and ended up being picked in the second round by the Astros, signing for a $1.5M bonus.
 
2025 Summary

Tredwell stayed healthy all of 2025, moving through three levels and going 5-3, 3.69 in 100 innings with 122 strikeouts.  He toggled between both starting and relieving and threw well in both roles and ended the season striking out 40 hitters in 22 innings in AA.

2026 Perspective

The Astros don’t have much pitching depth in their minor league system but their Major League team always seems to churn through unheralded arms and get strong performances from them.  Tredwell could be 2026’s version of AJ Blaubaugh.

2024 Featured PG Player:  LHP Colton Gordon

2025 Update:  Gordon got off to a strong start in AAA to begin the year and was called up to make his MLB debut on May 14.  He’s thrown 81 big league innings filling in for injured Astros starters, going 6-4, 5.34, allowing more home runs (21) than issuing walks (19).

Los Angeles Angels  --  RHP George Klassen

Klassen has been a very talented enigma since early in his high school career, showing high ceiling potential often, beginning with when he was named a 2019 PG All-American, and also hitting some particular low points, such as missing 2021 with TJ surgery and walking 61 hitters in 64 college innings over three years.

The first time I saw Klassen throw was one of the lesser times; the 2018 PG Underclass All-American Games.  Klassen, who was a very young 6-1/155 at the time, had a loose and fast arm that produced an 85-90 mph fastball and some spin on a breaking ball.  He also scattered the backstop, especially from the wind up and was pretty uncompetitive amid a very talented group of players.  There were 20 players at that event who were selected to play in the 2019 PG All-American Classic.  19 of those 20 were on the Top Prospect List from the that event.  Klassen was the lone omission.

Fast forward 10 months to the 2019 PG National Showcase and it was a completely different story.  Klassen was 91-94 mph with a nasty low 80’s curveball and plenty of strikes and an obvious All-American Selection.  Here is his report from the event.

Slender athletic build, lots of room to get stronger. Full hands over the head delivery, deep hooked arm in back, high 3/4's arm slot, short stride out front and gets over the ball well with steep downhill plane, arm is very fast and loose, has plenty of energy at release. Fastball up to 94 mph with very good arm side life at times, ball flies out of his hand on his fastball. Power low 80's curveball was a nasty hammer at times, sharp bite with power spin, consistently landed his curveball for strikes. Dominated with his fastball/curveball mix. Has really taken a step forward since last summer and has the arm and body to keep improving. Good student. Named to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Klassen went undrafted in the abbreviated 2020 draft after his spring season was canceled, missed 2021 with the aforementioned TJ surgery and only threw 7.2 innings, with 14 walks and 7 HBP’s, in 2022, so he essentially didn’t pitch competitively for three years.

While Klassen’s 2023 season at Minnesota, where he finished 1-7, 5.72 in 56 innings with 47 walks, didn’t excite scouts on the field, the fact that Klassen was throwing 98-101 mph definitely got him on the draft map.  The Phillies picked him with the 193rd overall pick, a pretty good bargain for a 100+ mph arm, and signed Klassen for $297,500.

Klassen’s first pro season, which featured a 6-5, 3.10 record and 135 strikeouts in 93 innings across four levels (only 46 walks) gave Klassen renewed prospect status and created an unexpected asset for the Phillies.  They traded him at the 2024 trade deadline as part of a deal for Angels closer Carlos Estevez.

2025 Summary

Klassen made 25 starts in 2025, all but one in AA, and finished with a 4-12, 5.22 record with 134 strikeouts in 108 innings.  His raw stuff continued to be outstanding, with an upper 90’s fastball and improved command of two breaking balls, but while he showed he could miss upper-level barrels with his strikeout totals, he also showed he could find them with too much consistency.

2026 Perspective

Klassen’s arm and raw stuff will get him an opportunity for the Angels sooner rather than later, which will likely come in 2026.  A quick start to the 2026 season, likely in AAA, would pretty much guarantee that.

2025 Update:  Dana stayed healthy all of 2025, good news for a 21-year old who threw 145 innings in 2024 and went 6-9, 5.93 in 82 AAA innings, then allowed 9 home runs in 32 big league innings (0-4, 6.40) late in the year.

Can Gage Jump make a case for being the most unhittable pitcher in Perfect Game/WWBA history?  The sample size is pretty small but it’s hard to argue against his case.  Jump threw in four major WWBA tournaments during his junior and senior years.  Here are the results:

2019 WWBA World Championship:  4 innings, 0 hits, 9 strikeouts, 2 walks

2020 17U Ultimate Baseball Championship:  3 innings, 0 hits, 7 strikeouts, 0 walks

2020 WWBA 17U National Championships:  5.1 innings, 0 hits, 5 strikeouts, 2 walks

2020 WWBA World Championships:  8 innings, 1 hit, 13 strikeouts, 1 walk

That’s a total of 20.1 innings pitched, 1 hit allowed, 5 walks and 34 strikeouts.  Followers of travel baseball will recognize the teams that Jump dominated so thoroughly:  San Diego Scout Team, Elite Squad, Team Elite, Ostingers Baseball Academy, Excel Blue Wave, 5 Star National.

Jump also pitched at the 2020 PG National Showcase, which generated this report:

Medium athletic build. High leg lift delivery with a good hip turn at the top, very compact arm action in back the really hides the ball well, high 3/4's arm slot, hitters absolutely do not see the baseball, shows athleticism and repeats his mechanics well. Primary fastball pitcher, worked 90-93 mph with his fastball for two innings, gets high spin rate angle through the zone, will occasionally get under his fastball but got nothing but swing/miss in the zone. Has some spin to his curveball but it is a secondary pitch at present, would be interesting with a fading change up to play off his out-pitch fastball. Very high-performance left hander who knows his strengths and pitches to them. Good student, verbal commitment to UCLA.

It almost goes without saying that Jump was as dominant at the high school level as well even though he was pitching in arguably the hardest league in the country, for JSerra Catholic HS, going 9-0, 0.63 with 103 strikeouts in 55 innings as a senior.

Still, as a 5-11/170 left hander with a 90-93 mph fastball that he threw probably 80% of the time, the draft market was not big for Jump, although the Padres spent an 18th round speculation pick on him in 2021. 

Jump started off fine at UCLA as a freshman, striking out 22 in his first 16 innings between three starts and four relief appearances but then went down with an elbow injury and TJ surgery cost him the rest of 2022 and all of 2023.  He transferred to LSU for the 2024 season and returned to full health and effectiveness, going 6-2, 3.47 in 83 innings with only 66 hits allowed and 101 strikeouts.

The Athletics drafted Jump with the second to last pick of the second round (73rd overall) and Jump used his leverage as a draft eligible sophomore to go above slot with his bonus, signing for a $2,000,000 bonus.

2025 Summary
Jump’s first professional season was a rousing success, as he threw 112 innings between High A and AA, going 9-7, 3.28 and striking out 131 hitters while only walking 34.  Jump’s raw stuff also continued to edge forward as he continue to get stronger and be further removed from missing most of the 2022 and all of the 2023 season after elbow surgery.

2026 Perspective
The Athletics have a stronger need than most teams to develop their own pitching talent given their home park situation in the near and far term and fortunately have a healthy supply of talented starter candidates in their system.  Jump may be the most talented and most ready of the group in the context of a starting role at some point in 2026.

2024 Featured PG Player:  SS Jacob Wilson

2025 Update:  Wilson was the early favorite for AL Rookie of the Year until his teammate, Nick Kurtz, posted historical numbers.  But Wilson still hit .311-13-67/.799 while posting a 2.9 bWAR and establishing himself as a potential future All-Star.

Seattle Mariners  --  C Harry Ford
High School:  North Cobb HS (Kennesaw, Ga.)
Travel Team:  East Cobb Astros
Final PG Class Ranking:  11th (2021)
Drafted:  1st Round, 2021, Seattle (12th overall)
Highest 2025 Level:  MLB
2026 Age:  23

Ford grew up in the East Cobb program and played a huge amount in his high school days, even packing 60 games at PG tournaments, plus the PG National Showcase and PG All-American Classic into the pandemic summer of 2020. 

During the 2018 and 2019 summers, Ford was basically already a high-level athlete with notable running and throwing tools but hit .265 and .267 with limited power on big volume those two summers.  The reason was pretty simple.  In 2018, Ford was listed at 5-10/165.  In 2019 he’d moved up to 5-10/180.  And Ford must have spent most of the pandemic lockdown in an improvised gym like many of his peers across the country because he came to the National Showcase in early June at an impressive 5-10/200 with real muscle to go with his 6.50 speed and 85 mph arm behind the plate.

Ford’s report from the National Showcase read:

Strong well-proportioned athletic build. Outstanding runner and athlete for a catcher, 6.50 in the sixty. Quick and twitchy behind the plate defensively, comes out of his crouch explosively, plus arm strength with carry from a very compact arm action, athletic enough to play all over the field. Right-handed hitter, hits from a narrow stance with a hanging leg lift load, very short to the ball with good extension out front, gets lots of carry off the barrel especially when pulling, really starting to come into his power potential. Excellent student, verbal commitment to Georgia Tech. Selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Ford put an exclamation mark on his newly developed bat speed and power at the All-American Classic, blasting a 400+ foot home run to center field that got out quick.

The question about Ford once he got strong was always if he would stay behind the plate defensively or move to another position such as center field.  Despite all his experience catching high quality pitchers he was still developing his receiving and blocking skills.  To Ford’s credit, he never dabbled in other positions that I ever heard or noticed, he completely identified as a catcher.

Ford was signed with Georgia Tech but received first round reviews all spring and eventually was picked 12th overall by the Mariners and signed for a $4,366,400 bonus.

2025 Summary

 Ford had a standout year as a 22-year old in AAA in 2025, hitting .283-16-74/.868 with an impressive 74:88 walk to strike ratio.  After frequent talk of letting the very athletic Ford play in the outfield more after dabbling there in 2024, he only caught in 2025.

2026 Perspective

Ford and superstar Cal Raleigh are the only catchers presently on the Mariners 40-man roster after they released 2025 back up Mitch Garver.  While carrying a 23-year old top prospect as a backup is uncommon,  Raleigh did start at DH 38 times in 2025 and may see even more time there in the future to keep him healthy and his bat in the lineup.

2025 Update:  Young got off to a strong start after being called up on May 31st but tailed off late in the year, finishing at .211-3-24/.607.  Still, the 22-year old is clearly the Mariners second baseman of the future.

Texas Rangers  --  RHP Alejandro Rosario
High School:  Miami Christian School (Miami, Fla.)

Drafted:  5th Round, 2023, Texas
Highest 2025 Level:  DNP-Injured
2026 Age:  24

Rosario developed into his velocity quick at the start of the summer after his freshman year when he was 88-91 mph for seven innings (12 K’s) at the 2017 WWBA 14U East Memorial Day Classic, which earned him the Most Valuable Pitcher award from the event. 

He continued to throw very well the entire summer, being named All-Tournament at both the 15U BCS Championship and WWBA 15 Championships while topping out at 93 mph at both events.  He finished the summer throwing 92 mph at the 14U PG Select Festival, an event he was impressively still eligible, then came back in October and was named the MVPitcher at the WWBA Sophomore World Championship, topping out at 94 mph and easily maintaining 90+ for five innings.

Two things happened in 2018 for Rosario.  First, he reclassified forward to the 2020 class, which fit his age best.  He also missed the summer season due to injury and didn’t appear at a PG event all year. 

Rosario was named to pitch in the 2019 All-American Classic and was 95-97 mph with his fastball to go with a hard split finger change up, his primary secondary pitch in high school as he was still developing his ability to spin either a curveball or slider.

Rosario had plenty of draft interest in 2020 but had a firm and long-standing commitment to hometown Miami.  He spent three healthy years at Miami maintaining his elite level velocity and filling lots of innings; exactly 200 in those three seasons.  He also showed an advanced ability to find hard barrels and finished his college career with an unsightly ERA of 7.14, including 7.47 in 74 innings as a junior. 

Still, a healthy arm pumping mid to upper 90s strikes, even if lacking a viable breaking ball or a track record of success, is attractive to pro organizations and Rosario was no exception, going to the Rangers in the fifth round and signing for a $437,900 bonus.

2025 Summary

Rosario didn’t pitch in 2025 after injuring his elbow preparing for spring training and undergoing TJ surgery.

2026 Perspective

Rosario’s 2024 professional debut was so dominant (129 K’s versus 13 walks in 88 innings) and his raw stuff so good (upper 90s fastball to go with a hard split finger up to 92 and a much-improved mid-80s slider) that a healthy bounce back from surgery should give him a shot of at least joining the big league bullpen at some point in 2026.

March 3 Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Cider Canon, OF, Duke  The Duke Blue Devils (11-3) went through massive changes in the offseason, with a new coaching staff and heavy roster turnover like is often seen in the college game today.  That hasn’t held them back as they have kind of flown under the radar on their way to a tie for the most wins in the nation.  They won 4 out 5 games last week and Cider Canon was the driving force behind their offensive onslaught.  The 5-11/180 outfielder from San Marino, CA put together an incredible week collecting 9 hits in 14 at-bats, good for a .643 BA, scoring 7 runs, with 3 walks, 4 home runs and driving in a total of 10 runs.  After a successful couple years at Davidson College, Cider made the trip north to Durham and has fit right into the Blue Devil’s high-octane offense.  For the season, he is...

Three weeks in and we are beginning to see some separation across the country.  The quality and depth, or lack thereof, are becoming evident and the conference segment for several conferences starts up this weekend.  Midweek games continue to be a tossup and only the teams that are strong on both sides of the ball have been able to maintain momentum.  We have a new No. 1 in this week’s poll as UCLA (9-2) has already accumulated 5-wins against teams that are currently or were previously ranked in the Top 25.  With last weekend’s sweep of No. 17 Tennessee (8-3), Texas A&M (10-1) and No. 4 Mississippi State (11-1) at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series, the Bruins leap now No. 2 LSU (11-1) and No. 3 Georgia Tech (11-1) to take over the top spot.  The Texas Longhorns (11-0) are up to No. 5 as one of only 3-remaining undefeated teams in the nation,...
