Frame/Setup

Caraway features a physical 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame. There is quality strength present in the lower half, as well as the chest and forearms. The frame does not have a ton of projection remaining, but is plenty strong enough now. At the plate, Caraway utilizes an even base stance with a slight crouch in the lower half. The hands start near the back ear with the barrel laid back parallel to the ground. A toe tap timing mechanism is used with some rhythm to the hands. Quality balance throughout the operation allows for consistent timing and barrel accuracy. A clean path to contact stays in the zone and gets extended well out font. The intent and hand speed behind the barrel allow the head to get out front and do damage to the pull side.

Tools

Caraway possesses a strong offensive profile with a sound defensive ability to match as there is loud impact off the barrel consistently, producing triple digit exit velocities regularly. There is some swing and miss present, but Caraway rarely mishits balls. The quality contact still gives the hit tool a high floor. As for the power potential, Caraway possesses above-average raw power that plays mostly to the pull side. Presently, ball flight has slightly hindered the ability to turn the raw power into consistent over-the-fence power in-game. Caraway will still beat up gaps and collect extra-base hits at a high rate. If he can lift balls more consistently, it would not be a surprise if the home run totals start to stack up at a high rate. Defensively, Caraway is about as solid as you can get at third base. Confident hands catch balls consistently. He can work through tough hops and handle hot shots with ease. The arm plays across the diamond, creating strong, accurate throws consistently. Overall, it is a well-rounded skill set with the ability to contribute on both sides of the ball.

“The Buzz”

Caraway entered the year ranked No. 32 on our PG Draft Board. Off to a strong start this spring, there is a very real chance that the Beaver’s third baseman plays his way into the first round. Caraway has traits to like at the plate with even more potential to tap into. If the in-game power takes another step forward, there is no telling how high Caraway can go. The defense has been solid, adding more value to the profile. Caraway will be a strong contributor to the Beaver lineup and will draw plenty of eyes throughout the spring.

Summation

Caraway very realistically could have entered pro ball after his prep career. The profile was impressive then and has taken even more steps forward. When on the field, Caraway has been a loud performer for the Beavers. A tough luck injury ended his spring early last year, but he bounced back with a strong summer in the Cape and is off to the races early on this spring. A full year healthy with performance up to Caraway’s level, should result in a day one selection for the third baseman.
