Mid-South PG Juco Invitational Preview

Mid-South PG Juco Invitational

This is year one for the PG Juco invitational held in Millington, Tennessee at the former Olympic training site. This year’s field is promising for the growth of the event into the future as it include perennial Midwest powerhouse, Wabash Valley (16) as well as our 24th ranked team, the Kansas City Kansas Blue Devils. Other top teams in the field include the 29th ranked Northwest Mississippi, JeffCo, Hinds CC, Indian Hills, and Iowa Central with the returning ICCAC Player of the Year and UNC commit, Cooper Nicholson. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 10 AM. Without further ado, let’s get into some players and picks for the PG Juco Invitational.

Players to Watch:

PGJC Rank/Name/YR/ School

14. Cooper Nicholson SO Iowa Central: Returning ICCAC POTY, hit .364 with 20 pumps as a frosh.

40. AJ Malzone SO Wabash Valley: Left-hand hitting catcher with huge pop. Hit .372 as a frosh with 33 BB to 19 K.

60. Frankie Santiago SO Kansas City Kansas: Returning 1st team all-region. Switch hitting C/1B. Middle of the order bat. .343 15 HR as a frosh. Polished.

82. Walker Sanders RS-FR Northwest MS: BYU transfer that put up a huge fall. Potential game changing bat that can play all three OF positions.

126. Caleb Deer SO Kansas City Kansas: Physically dominant southpaw that has been reported to be well into the upper 90’s now. 3 pitch mix with huge potential.

145. Jake Titus SO Kansas City Kansas: Kentucky transfer. 3 pitches with mid 90’ gas. Up to 97 last spring.

160. Thomas Mitchell FR Northwest MS: Ole Miss transfer. Big durable build. Good command of the arsenal with bowling ball upper 80’s/ low 90’s heaters.

209. Arata Motohashi FR Indian Hills: Potential explosive fastball, unconfirmed footage of 100 MPH fastball surfaced on social media this fall/winter.  Clean athletic operation with a fast arm.

213. Eli Deberry FR Northwest MS: Big durable arm with upper 80’s/low 90’s fastball and 2 potential plus off-speed offerings behind it. Clean op with track record on the mound.

215. Caleb Reed SO Kansas City Kansas: One of the best sliders in Kansas juco. 3 pitch mix, athletic mover and projectable at 6-4/180.

225. Codi Scott FR JeffCo: 6-4/200 with 3 pitches, up to 92. Betting on projection.

234. Krew Bond SO Wabash Valley: Compact muscle-bound frame, batted .364 with 9 pumps as a freshman.

239. Tyce Powers FR Northwest MS: Plucked from a 1A Kentucky HS, Lean loose southpaw with limitless projection. High ceiling frame/stuff if it all comes together.

258. McClain Ray SO Northwest MS: Injury plagued but once upon a time a pretty high touted right-handed pitcher. Low 90’s with feel for advanced breaking stuff.

286. Hector Roca FR Wabash Valley: Physical RHH catcher from Doral Acdemy. Solid catch and throw skills with a chance to be an impact stick.

308. Ryan Ohm SO Iowa Central: 8-2 record with a mid 3’s ERA in 14 starts as a freshman. Illinois commit.

319. Freddie Nolen IV FR Kansas City Kansas: Physical corner outfielder. Middle of the order bat. 6.45 runner, 90+ from the OF. 98 EV.

347. Marcus Dierks SO Kansas City Kansas: 6.2 runner. Left-hand hitting outfielder, hit .380 with 20 SB as a Freshman.

348. Luke Micunek SO Jackson College: 6-5/195 RHP. Pitched to a 6-1 record with a 3.33 ERA and a sub 1 WHIP in 2024.

351. Mark Elliott SO Kansas City Kansas: Athletic 2-way. That performed really well in the fall.

352. Andy Hernandez SO Wabash Valley: Undersized 5-8 RHP. FB/SL up to 94 in the fall with a low to mid 80's slider. FIU commit.

356. Hallas Lawson FR Northwest MS: Hernando HS product, good feel for the game behind the dish, line drive impact through the gaps offensively, should develop into more in game power.

382. Brady Stinnett FR Northwest MS: Tops off a strong FR class for the Rangers. Ole Miss transfer. Competitor with feel to pitch on the hill.

391. Brady Kern SO Kansas City Kansas: One of Jucos' better CF. Swing is unorthodox but put up some solid numbers as a freshman in 2024.

488. Graham Busbea SO Hinds: Versatile defender that has good feel to hit, already flashing some thump to start 2025.

Trey Reinburg SO Wabash Valley: Wiry athlete with gamer traits on the hill. Mostly 90-93 with running life. Extra gear to the hard slider will rack up whiffs. Burst on to the scene at the PCB College Classic.

Troy Sutherland's Champion Pick: Northwest Mississippi

Head Coach Mark Carson and co. have put together one of the premier rosters in the Mississippi Juco, full of highly touted arms and under the radar position player talent. The Rangers' staff is excited about BYU transfer Walker Sanders heading into the 2025 campaign, saying that he could be one of the conference's best bats while providing better than serviceable ability roaming about the outfield for the club. The freshman catcher duo of Hallas Lawson and Lake Reed should continue to carve out their roles early in the season but could pay dividends in their chase for Enid. But in this early season Juco tournament style format I’m going to place my faith in the arms. Between Connor McCaslin, Thomas Mitchell, Tyce Powers, Eli Deberry, and Brady Stinnett, the Rangers are a good bet to perform well in a format that requires a bevy of premium arms.

Blaine Peterson's Champion Pick: Kansas City Kansas CC

The Blue Devils will begin their season at the PG Juco Invitational this week. A team coming off a 47-12 record a season ago and three consecutive 40+ win seasons. They’ll bring back some key pieces from the 2024 team as a core for the 2025 season. C/1B Frankie Santiago (Kansas) was Jayhawk East Freshman of the Year in 2024 after hitting .343 with 15 home runs. Freddie Nolen IV and Marcus Dierks are both versatile players that played significantly in 2024. Nolen is a physical RHH that had 22 XBH as a freshman. Whole Dierks proved to be a contact-oriented hitter with speed (.381 AVG, 20 SB) as a freshman. Add in CF Brady Kern (Washington State) who is one of the better defenders in Juco baseball and this is a solid group of returners. One newcomer to watch is transfer Cade Parry, a 2-way talent that performed well in the fall and should impact games in multiple ways this spring. On the mound RHP Caleb Reed and LHP Bryson Vawter (Western Kentucky) both return from the 2024 team and should both be impact arms after they both stuck out over a batter an inning as freshman. Look for transfer RHP Jake Titus and returning LHP Caleb Deer to be major parts of the 2025 pitching staff. They may both be among junior college baseballs harder throwers this season and add another level of intrigue to this seasons Blue Devil team. It’ll be their first test of 2025, but this is a team with the talent level to win this year’s PG Juco Invitational.

He toed the rubber in round two of the playoffs, proceeding to toss six innings with eight punchouts and zero earned runs allowed. The 6-foot southpaw filled up all four quadrants of the strike zone, attacking hitters early and often with his fastball. The heater lived in the 88-91 mph range with heavy traits, often setting up his slurvy breaking ball. Bonnette showed good feel...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

Stacked Baseball was the overwhelming top team throughout the week as the WWBA Champions outscored opponents by an absurd 117-12 during their 11-0 run. “We got some talented kids, but we played against a little bit of Goliath over there,” Stacked Head Coach Mike...

The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. Alyssa Golden

Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...
