College Reports: April 14

Photo: Ryan Johnson (DBU Athletics)
Players Featured: Garrett Horn (Liberty), Blake Wehunt (Kennesaw State), Blake Aita (Kennesaw State), Trey Carter (Liberty), Ryan Johnson (DBU)

Garrett Horn, LHP, Liberty
Horn was one of the best pitchers in the country a season ago, regardless of class, and has continued to shine in the Friday night role for the Liberty Flames in his sophomore year. He worked around some command issues in the start against Kennesaw State and allowed two runs through 5 1/3 innings pitched. Horn stuck out four and allowed three walks while also issuing eight hits. The command has become an issue for Horn this year as he has already issued seven more walks than a season ago.

Last year Horn was working in the 92-95 range, grabbing 96 mph routinely but in this look he was sitting comfortably in the 90-92 range and grabbed 93 mph a few times. Everything looks low effort with Horn as he has easy arm speed and it's easy to project onto the 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame. The slider was the best pitch for him tonight as he went to it early and often, getting tons of whiffs on the pitch. He spins it in the 2500 RPM range and creates good depth. It matches fastball plane very well, making it tough for hitters to pick up out of the hand. He also showed the ability to turn over a changeup to right-handed hitters with good fading action.

Horn has continued to solidify himself as one of the top left-handers in a good 2024 draft class and continues to climb. He's got some of the best stuff in the country, it's just a matter of harnessing it and throwing strikes. Horn is athletic and repeats well which should allow him to clean everything up and be in store for a monstrous ending to his sophomore year and an even better junior year. Look for Horn's name to be called early in the 2024 draft. -Cam McElwaney

Blake Wehunt, RHP, Kennesaw State
Wehunt, a transfer from Southern Miss, has been the Friday night guy for Kennesaw State throughout his junior campaign and has put up some impressive numbers. This was no different in a big ASUN matchup against Liberty in the opening game of the series. Wehunt went seven full innings and registered five strikeouts to just one walk, increasing his K/BB ratio to 50:9 on the year.

The velocity was down just a tick in this look as he has worked into the mid-90s in previous outings this season. The fastball still had good quality in the 90-91 range and he held that velocity for the duration of the start. The slider is his go-to off-speed pitch and it has good depth and horizontal break when right. He also mixed in a quality changeup in the low-80s with typical arm-side fading action to it. He works with a quick tempo delivery and a clean, inline arm circle in the back to a higher slot release. He has a durable build with present strength and showcased the ability to hold the stuff into the later innings.

Overall, the pitchability of Wehunt was on display without the velocity that he's had in previous outings. He landed the slider when he needed to and worked out of a few jams in the early going. Wehunt has a chance to be a middle round selection in the 2023 draft and could be higher if the velocity gets back up to what it was earlier in the year. -Cam McElwaney

Blake Aita, RHP, Kennesaw State
Aita has been a swiss army knife type arm out of the Kennesaw State bullpen in his freshman year. He's been asked to throw multiple innings this year a few times and has put together a solid statline so far. Against Liberty, he went 3 1/3 innings, punching out four, allowing two walks and two hits along with giving up three runs.

The fastball sat comfortably in the 90-93 range with good riding life out of the hand and spins as high as 2745 RPM. The changeup is a solid pitch in the low-80s with typical fading action. He's still developing true feel for the pitch as he lost a few high and arm-side in the outing. The slider is the best pitch in his arsenal and one of the best pitches on the Kennesaw State staff. He creates huge spin numbers on the pitch in the low-80s, throwing 10 over 3000 RPM. The pitch has good sweeping action with some late depth to it. He has a good three pitch mix going right now with a chance to develop a fourth pitch, he could find himself in the mix for a rotation spot next season. -Cam McElwaney

Trey Carter, RHP, Liberty
Carter has been a big weapon out of the bullpen for the Liberty Flames in his junior year and continued that trend on Friday night at Kennesaw State. He came in during the sixth inning and worked 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only two hits, striking out six and walking two batters.

The frame catches the eye right off the jump as he stands at 6-foot-4, 215-pounds with obvious strength throughout the build. He has a short arm action to a high three-quarters release, creating good spin on the fastball. He's been into the upper-90s before but in this look he sat mostly in the 91-93 range, grabbing 94 mph twice in the early going of the relief appearance. His slider, albeit a low spin pitch, got tons of ugly whiffs. He throws the pitch with conviction and does a good job of tunneling it off the fastball. He showed confidence in early counts with the slider as well as the ability to go to it later in counts as a put away pitch. He works down the slope athletically and works over the front side well with the arm staying in good position throughout the delivery.

Overall, Carter just continued his dominance out of the bullpen in this look. Even with the velocity being down just a tick, it didn't really matter as he made quick work of the Kennesaw State offense. If he continues to put together performances like this, he'll be a name we hear called during the draft in June.

-Cam McElwaney

Ryan Johnson, RHP, Dallas Baptist
DBU ace Ryan Johnson had a precarious start to his usual Friday night regimen as the scheduled 6:30 PM game didn't get going until 7:40 PM due to weather. As such, the Patriots opted in favor of an opener and Johnson entered the game with runners on in the second inning. After entering, it was clear Johnson was amped up and he proceeded to throw the next six innings of shutout baseball with six strikeouts in total against one of the better offenses in Conference USA.

Johnson was a notable prospect in high school as a long, projectable, and hard-throwing Texas-native with a big arm but some room for refinement. As such, he got around 50 innings under his belt as a true freshman and started about half his appearances having an overall fairly successful freshman campaign. He's taken the next step in year two, however, emerging as a frontline ace for the Patriots, a legitimate C-USA Pitcher of the Year contender, and the latest example of how the arm factory in Dallas churns out big time pitching prospects.

At 6-foot-6, 212-pounds, he's a big, imposing presence on the mound with big energy and some funk to the delivery. It's a lot of moving parts in the windup, a bit more simplified in the stretch, but it's still a lot to take in when you factor the stuff and deception. The arm action is a bit longer through the back with above average arm speed and he looks like he's trying to throw it through the catcher's mitt. The delivery and breaking ball command being sharper than the fastball command generate some relief risk he's also still a 6-foot-6 20-year old still refining his arsenal.

The stuff was excellent, working up to 96 mph with the fastball, living 93-95 mph early and finishing around 91-93 with 4s and 5s in his back pocket when he needed it. The fastball generates a fair amount of sink and run to the arm side with it being a bit more true in terms of life when locating to the glove side. The slider was plus frequently on Friday night with Johnson being particularly adept at dropping the pitch in on the back hip or foot of left-handed hitters. The slider worked in the mid-80s mostly with lots of sweeping action and is a true swing-and-miss pitch. The lower-band velocity breakers could have been curveball variants but it blended in that 79-81 mph range with his best sliders coming at 83-85 mph. He also turned over a couple changeups in the 84-87 mph range that could become a solid offering with more reps.

Johnson's rise is a big factor in why Dallas Baptist cracked the Top 25 for the first time this season and despite getting his warmup routine disrupted by weather, was able to turn in a very good performance in this one. He looks and is performing like an ace right now and is undoubtedly a top draft follow for the 2024 class.

Cape Cod Notebook No. 1

Perfect Game Staff

Cape Cod League Scouting Notebook  Maverick Rizy | Ole Miss | RHP | Brewster Whitecaps  The towering 6-foot-9, 250-pound right-hander continues to stand out with one of the more unique looks on the Cape, pairing a massive frame with a low three-quarter slot that creates difficult angles for hitters. While his fastball velocity was down from its typical mid-90s range during this look, working mostly 90-92 mph, it still generated plenty of swing-and-miss. He paired the heater with an 81-83 mph gyro slider featuring tight bullet-spin action and mixed in an 85-mph changeup with quality separation. Rizy battled his command early in the outing I saw, before settling in to strike out five over three innings, showing the ability to adjust as the game progressed. Through 12.2 Cape League innings, he has recorded 18 strikeouts, and his combination of size, deception, and projectability...

Final 2026 MLB Mock Draft

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
It's draft day and that means it's time for our final Mock Draft with the 2026 group. 1. Chicago White Sox | Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA It’s between Roch and Grady Emerson at this pick, though there have been heavy rumors of a very late deal potentially with another top 5 pick. This boils down to negotiations and we think that they will get there.  2. Tampa Bay Rays | Grady Emerson, SS, Fort Worth Christian (Tex.) If Grady isn’t the first pick then he is almost certain to be the second pick. The Rays like to get creative but Emerson is a well worth prospect in his own right.  3.  Minnesota Twins | Vahn Lackey, C, Georgia Tech This is likely the floor for Roch Cholowsky, though the Twins might prefer Lackey to Roch outright. They are thought to be in on the top college players with Emerson a distant third.  4. San Francisco Giants | Jackson Flora, RHP, UC...

‘28 INF Christian Ramirez (OH) WALKS IT OFF for @CincyDBulls2028 to win the chip! Has shown impressive tools throughout the weekend and in this AB showed the ability to adjust to the offspeed and win the game. #OVElite pic.twitter.com/J3MXJXFnbM — Perfect Game Ohio Valley (@PG_OhioValley) July 5, 2026 Christian Ramirez (2028, Mason, Ohio) helped his team win the championship batting out of the two-hole. Though he didn’t win tournament MVP, Ramirez was my favorite player to watch take a plate appearance. He has an advanced feel for the zone and sees the ball out of the pitcher’s hand quicker than most. Ramirez led the tournament with eight walks, batting .375 with a .583 on-base percentage. Much more than just the approach, the swing is efficient with little wasted movement, creates quality separation, and puts him in an excellent position at contact. With such an...
