Archbishop McCarthy Powers Way to Title

Hoover, Ala. -- After a couple hard fought victories to start the Showdown, both 4-2 finals, the bats came alive in a very big way. The Mavericks scored eleven runs in both the semifinals and finals swinging hot and powerful bats. After getting down to a 3-0 early with Sparkman getting hits from Nick Causey, Carter Wells, and Brandon Wilbanks all getting hits in the inning. The ABM offense would put up runs in the final five frames to eventually win the championship in 11-to-5 fashion over Sparkman High School.

After going fairly quiet in the first inning they started a two out rally by working three walks. Star shortstop, Antonio Jimenez stepped to the plate. The senior leader came through with a long three run double into the right centerfield gap to plate a pair of runs. That calmed the nerves of the Maverick hitters and they would continue to chip away.

Gregory Caban would knock in a run in the 3rd inning with a long sacrifice fly. The defense put up a zero in the top of the 4th inning, paving the way for the breakout bottom half. Jimenez would notch a one out single, Justin Lebron would walk, Andrew Ildefonso would knock them both in with a double to the left centerfield gap to knock both in. Nicholas Gutierrez-Villa would then follow with a double of his own to drive in Ildefonso to put up a crooked number on the score board to take a 6-3 lead in the game.

Sparkman would fight back in the top of the 5th Jacob Staley led off with a single, Jack Buening work a walk and Evan Nelson knocked in Staley with his second hit of the afternoon. Wells then hit a sac fly to score Buening to cut the lead to one. ABM immediately answered with a four spot in the bottom half as Noah Alburquerque doubled to knock in a run before Vincent Capone put the game with a dagger two run single. Ryan Hunter would double in the 6th and would come around to score, to finish the scoring off. Danny Machado had two hits and was a key offensive contributor.

This was a fantastic run to the White Championship as the Mavericks play a fun style combining huge energy and a next-man-up type of trust in each other.

MVP-Player – Evan Nelson
MV-Pitcher – Andrew Ildefonso

Other Notables From Day 3

Carter Johnson (2024 Oxford, Ala.) led Oxford to another PG Showdown Championship and also collected an MV-Player award for his efforts. He is a 6-2 shortstop with sure-hands and really good transfers skills. The athleticism shows up on both sides of the ball with a balanced approach and fluid movements. The left-handed stick might be the calling card, however. It is a really good sequence and fast hands play big when launched. He belted a double in the semifinals and then launched a long homer in the stadium during the championship game. The tools and toughness both stood out.

Andrew Ildefonso (2023 Miami, Fla.) was the MV-Pitcher of the White Bracket. He pitched 7-innings and gave up a single earned run while striking out 4. On Saturday, he did damage with the stick. He has a strong frame with a pretty effortless stroke. The timing showed up and allowed him to get extended on two hammered doubles that really helped break the game open. His two way ability should be an attractive addition to a class at the next level.

Jacob Haley (2023, Huntsville, Ala.) is a very good two-way prospect and the power arm and the power bat stood out this weekend. He batted .500 with 3-doubles and a triple while facing top competition from the Southeast. He hammered a couple knocks on Saturday including a long double he back spun  with carry, burning the centerfielder easily. This is a pretty exciting prospect and that power really stood out.

John Martinez (2023, Orlando, Fla.) showed out defensively all weekend making plays all over the diamond. The body control and ability to change arm angles while throwing on the run was really impressive. In the championship game the bat came alive. He notched 3 hits, all line drives, displaying the ability to attack all parts of the field. One hit was a long double that stayed fair down the right field line. Martinez is a Florida Gator commit and if he continues to play like this on both sides of the ball he could be a real threat early when he gets to campus.

Andre Modugno (2023, Upper Saddle River, N.J.) got IMG going in the championship game when the game was in the balance as he lifted a long triple off the right field wall. There has always been an attraction to the tools of Modugno, who can run, throw, and hit for power. The ability to hit to all fields will help the hit tool come along and this was a great sign to see this type of drive. The ceiling is enormous and he is a highest level follow heading into summer.
