Top 10 Team Breakdowns

1. Harford (Bel Air, Md.)
The Fighting Owls of Harford and skipper Josh Houser feel confident that they are prepared to even further the success of the 2022 campaign. On the mound they be led by Delaware commit, 6’5 RHP Doug Marose, he works 88-93 with a full mix and added sharpness to both breaking balls over the fall and winter. As well as RHP Quinn Holt who works in the 90-93 range occasionally touching a 4 and 5 with the fastball to go along with a fade changeup and a sharp slider. Frank Siano has a chance to draw extended inning but mostly will be called upon in high leverage situations. At the plate the Owls will rely on the LHH SS Trey Cruz who did nothing but impress across the 2022 season with .1250 ops and 14 bombs. Additionally, will need productive seasons from Quinn Madden, the power bat of Pitt CC Robert Buckley, and Dylan Perry who is coming off a great summer in the Northwoods League. Madden batted a cool .315 with double digit home runs and doubles in 2022. I expect them to produce a bid to the World Series and sneakily do damage.

2. Niagara County
Coach Clingersmith and the Thunder Wolves made it all the way to the D3 NJCAA World Series and finished with a 49-11 record in 2022. The scary part is that this year’s squad could be even better. A trio of D1 commits will lead the pitching staff, as RHP Ryan Birchard (UCONN), RHP Kyle Finn (ODU) and Matthew SanFilippo (Eastern Michigan) all return. Finn and Birchard amassed nearly 90 innings pitched between the two, while securing identical 1.88 ERA’s. Sanfilippo brings an intriguing overall profile, as the right-hander punched out 18 hitters and walked just one in limited innings in 2022. Soph. Alex Minnehan could be a breakout star, as the uncommitted OF brings an exciting mix of bat-to-ball skills with intriguing power potential. He will look to build upon a freshman campaign that saw him hit .435 with nearly half of his hits going for extra bases. Howie Stuckey returns to the lineup, as the Soph. shortstop looks to take the next step offensively for the Thunder Wolves. The plethora of big arms at the front of the rotation should bode well for Coach Clingersmith, as they will certainly be one of the favorites to return to Greeneville, TN in 2023.

3. RCSJ-Gloucester
The Roadrunners will once again be the team to beat within Region 19, as they look to make what seems like their annual trip to the D3 NJCAA World Series. What Coach Rob Valli continually does is field rosters with loads of talent, while developing them into a formidable group year-in and year-out. The offense will be led by Soph. Aaron Graeber (Delaware); a left-handed hitting OF with 6.7 speed and the ability to lose one at any moment. He should see plenty of opportunities in a lengthy lineup in 2023. Soph. infielder Felix Diaz and Fr. 3B Rocko Brzeniak will provide the thump in the middle-of-the lineup, as both possess game changing power and should see plenty of runners on-base to drive in. Soph. shortstop Jimmy Bruno is the glue that holds the team together, while providing veteran leadership and some offensive prowess in his own right. California native Scotty Young will bring another speed element to the lineup and can affect the game in multiple ways. Second Team All-American Ethan Shaub will anchor the pitching staff, as the deceptive left-hander accrued an 8-0 record last season. A bevy of returning arms will be counted on to replicate their 2022 seasons, as right-handers Jason Kinnerman and Steven Maiers return. Goldey-Beacom transfer Cole Fowler could be an X-factor in-terms of truly lengthening the lineup, as he brings an excellent feel for the barrel and a knack for driving in runs. Coach Valli should really buy real estate in Greeneville, TN with the number of times his squads appear in the World Series, and this year should be no different. Expect the Roadrunners to make their annual trek and vie for another National Championship.

4. Frederick
The Cougars and Coach Bennett will look to make it back to the D2 NJCAA World Series for the third year in a row, as they amassed a 42-7 record and went toe-to-toe with the powerhouse programs from all over the country. Soph. Aidan Masters returns after a stellar 2022 campaign, which saw the right-handed hitting infielder hit .387 with 60 hits and more walks than strikeouts. Look for him to be a focal point within the lineup, while adding some more power to his game in 2023. Fellow infielder Joshua Wilson and Aidan Greaney return and should provide some thump to the middle-of-the lineup. Demetri Jamison was a doubles machine in 2022 and could take the next step in becoming a star. Look for him to build upon his tantalizing 2022 debut and become a major contributor for the Cougars. The pitching staff will be the ultimate factor when it comes to sustaining success for Coach Bennett and his squad, as a vast majority of their innings from last year have moved on. Several returners who saw limited innings in 2022 will battle the newcomers to see who can step and potentially lead them back to the D3 NJCAA World Series. With over 700 career victories, Coach Bennett will prepare his team to succeed but how well the pitching staff performs will be the key to their success in 2023.

5. Mercer County
Fresh off a final four appearance in the D2 NJCAA World Series, the Vikings will welcome a new head coach, as former player and assistant Russ Stupienski takes over the reins from Fred Carella. This year’s squad will be predicated on veteran leadership from their lone returning starter Dan Ciotti, transfers that will make an immediate impact and exciting freshman looking to contribute from the jump. He will be counted upon to be the catalyst atop the lineup and get things going for the Vikes. Freshman backstop Jacob Ramirez will man the cleanup spot and provide the thump within the lineup, look for him to potentially put up some big numbers in this deep lineup. A pair of transfers will man the middle infield for Coach Stupienski, as Hunter Rivera (UMBC) and Jalen Perez (Bryant & Stratton) are newcomers looking to make a splash. A pair of left-handers will man the first two spots in the rotation, as Soph. Brett Mutz and NJIT transfer Joe Dimino will look to put the Vikings in a position to win every series. Dimino is a hulking 6-foot-5 left-hander with a low-90s fastball and top of the rotation type stuff. He could potentially be right there for Pitcher of The Year honors at the end of 2023. Side-winder Ryan Conover provides a different look and can be deployed in a variety of ways, he was named to all the all-tournament team last year in Enid. Freshman left-hander Colin Bernhard showed exceptional pitchability in the fall and will provide length to the staff in various roles. Closer Andrew Luczak will be used in high leverage situations exclusively, as the Soph. right-hander brings a tantalizing heavy sinker, wipeout slider arsenal to the table. There is plenty of talent for Coach Stoop in his first year at the helm, but he will need the young newcomers to step up and take hold of their success in-order to get back to Enid in 2023. Look for them to potentially get hot towards the end of the season like last year and vie for a potential World Series berth once again.

6. Herkimer
The defending D3 World Series Champs will look starkly different from last year’s squad, as they will have to fill the voids left by not only their head coach Jason Rathburn (New HC at St.Bonaventure) but also several pieces that lead to the title despite getting in as an at-large participant. Ace left-hander Greg Farone is now at Louisville, while position players like Kyle Caccamise (St. Bonaventure), Sal Carricato (Lenior-Rhyne) and Mike Gunning (Binghamton) have also moved on. The lineup should more than hold their own again, as the Dakota Britt will look to repeat his 2022 performance that saw him hit .406 with 14 bombs. Soph. 3B Chance Cheeca brings an exciting mix of athleticism and is a power threat in his own right, as he launched 7 HRs of his own in '22. Speed demon Jovani Wiggs will look to build upon his successful 2022 campaign, as the sub-6.6 runner is a multi-dimensional offensive threat. Sophomores Ethan Duda and Ben Gilbert provide length to the lineup, while bringing their own offensive prowess to the table. UNC-Charlotte commit Troy Butler will anchor the pitching corps, as the flamethrowing right-hander should garner plenty of draft attention this upcoming season. Soph. RHP Joel Hayner will should expand his role on the staff and is expected to provide valuable innings in the rotation. Freshman Logan Marquez is a potential ace and could be the X-factor in determining how far this year’s rendition of the Generals can go. A deep, uber-talented lineup should allow for the pitching staff to figure things out early on and having someone like Butler to deploy in big time matchups certainly bodes well for a potential return appearance for Herkimer in this year’s World Series.

7. Lackawanna
Coach Mike McCarry and the Falcons will look to make another trip to the D2 NJCAA World Series after seeing their season halted by eventual D3 World Series participant Mercer County. The Falcons made trips to the World Series in 2019 and 2021 after not reaching one since 2015. This year’s squad returns a bevy of talent lead by Soph. flamethrower Kyle Scott, who has been into the upper-90s with his fastball and generates high level spin metrics (over 3000 RPMs on his slider). He will lead the rotation and will be able to go toe-to-toe with not only the region’s best lineups but also the countries best. 6-foot-5 right-hander Aiden Starn is back after amassing 44 innings pitched last year, as he will look to improve upon an up-and-down 2022 season. Wallace State transfer Owen Arndt should provide depth within the pitching corps and can be deployed in a variety of roles. A pair of freshman arms in LHP Ty Federici and RHP Devin Fletcher were touted in high school and could provide immediate innings to Coach McCarry and the Falcons. The lineup will have a chance to be prolific, as it returns a multitude of run producers with sky high upside. A trio of Sophomores in Zachary Walsh, Dennis Pierce and Christian Rush will provide plenty of firepower to the lineup and will be supported by the likes of Jacob Simpson, Ranciel Ventura and George Castro. Look for the Falcons to drastically improve their overall and be right there at the end vying for a berth in the D3 NJCAA World Series.

8. Delaware Tech
Coach Stu Madden and the Del Tech baseball squad got off to a hot start last season, as they won their first 19 games and eventually finished off the year with a 32-and-10 record. The offense scored nearly 400 runs in their 42 games by using a well-balanced attack with a good mixture of finesse and power. Soph. Matt Rodriguez returns a big piece of the offense for Coach Madden, as the power hitting first baseman hit .453 with 22 extra base hits and 45 RBI. Look for him to be a focal point within the lineup, while providing protection for newcomer Mason Morris. Morris should provide an immediate impact to the lineup as the highly touted C/OF brings an exciting mix of tools to the table. Fellow returners Hunter Rauch and Kory Pritchard bring experience and should provide plenty of offensive firepower themselves. RHP Cade Williams and LHP Wade Brooks are back and will once again sit atop the pitching rotation, as they accumulated over 70 innings between the two of them. Sophomore left-hander Kyle Coffey and Freshman Jorge Javier should provide depth within the rotation. They will be counted upon to ensure Delaware Tech can potentially repeat their success from last season, look for Coach Madden and crew to be a factor in Region 19, while vying for the ever so elusive NJCAA World Series bid.

9. County College of Morris
Head Coach Jason Fiore took over the helm in 2022 with the thought of returning CCM to prominence not only within the Region 19 but with the hope of returning to the D2 NJCAA World Series. After a 21-18 record last season, this year’s roster certainly could have the exact pieces to do just that. A plethora of power arms will allow for Coach Fiore and the Titans to be in just about every game they play, while an exciting mix of veteran hitters and some newcomers should score more than enough runs. Sacred Heart commit Ryan Devanney returns to the Hill and brings legitimate ace qualities with a fastball in the low-90s, while hulking 6-foot-7 Ryan Rzepinski generates tons of downhill plane that has been in the low-90s and should form a formidable one-two punch with Devanney. Left-handers Briant Bazydlo and Ishaan Patel will round out the starting four for the Titans, as they both offer different looks and upper-80s heat of their own. Soph. right-hander Alex Smith has added some ticks to his fastball and will be deployed in various high-leverage roles for Coach Fiore’s staff. Fellow returner Nick Nocito will lock things down as the closer, as the Soph. right-hander has been up to 90 mph with his fastball. The lineup will be led by a pair of transfers in Lafayette commit Ethan Young and Ryan Vollmer, as they both bring a high on-base mentality with barrel skills and a knack for driving in runs. Soph. backstop CJ Tomolavage will man the cleanup spot and should have plenty of opportunities to improve upon his 2022 offensive numbers. A potentially dominant pitching staff with a bevy of talented hitters should bode well for a resurgent program, as they look primed to make not only a deep run in Region 19 but could be a sleeper to grab a spot in this year’s D2 NJCAA World Series.

10. Northern Essex
Fresh off a 42-4 campaign, Coach Jeff Mejia and his squad will look to make it back to the D3 NJCAA World Series in 2023. The Knights were outstanding on both sides of the ball last season, as they hit .379 as a team and scored nearly 450 runs. However, it was the pitching staff that stole the show by leading the country in ERA at 1.88. Todd Tringale was the ace of the staff after a spotless 10-0 record for the Knights but has since moved on to Dayton University. A trio of returning arms gained ample experience last season and should allow for the Knights to be ultra-competitive on the mound once again. Right-handers Jayden Voekler and Alex Sweeney combined to win 15 games in 2022 with ERAs under 2.5 and 2.0 respectively. They will be counted upon to provide similar results this year, if the Knights want to make a repeat trip to the World Series. California native Jagger Iovinelli had a spotless 5-0 record and 1.93 ERA, as he provides a different look and could be a difference maker in 2023. Slugger Richard Matos returns to the middle-of-the lineup and will be expected to provide the thump for Coach Mejia’s lineup. He was an extra base machine in ’22, as more than half of hits went for extra bases (13 2Bs/10 HRs). Soph. OF Kameron Levesque could be a potential breakout star, as the twitchy right-handed hitter hit .412 last year as a freshman. Northern Essex’s success will ultimately be predicated on who can step up this year and provide a spark for what should be another solid roster for Coach Mejia. Look for the Knights to battle to the end and be in a spot to make a return trip to Greeneville, TN late this spring.

The 6-foot southpaw filled up all four quadrants of the strike zone, attacking hitters early and often with his fastball. The heater lived in the 88-91 mph range with heavy traits, often setting up his slurvy breaking ball. Bonnette showed good feel...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks
Article Image
JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...
