2022 Scouting Stories: 16u

With the 2022 calendar year wrapping up, our staff took some time to write about some things that stood out to the over the course of the national circuit, breaking it down into 5 categories which we'll go into further detail below. Today we look at the 16u age group as 5 of our scouts go into a story telling mode as opposed to our typical scouting narrative and reflect on some of the more memorable moments they saw in 2022.

Best Game I Saw
This category is pretty self explanatory with its title as the staff looks back at the single best tournament game they saw on the circuit.

Nelson Baseball School 16u Black vs. Cbu 2024 Scout Team
A first-round game during the WWBA 2024 Grads or 16U National Championship which turned out to be a pitching duel between left-hander Pete Jezerinac for NBS and right-hander Aden Knowles for Cbu. Knowles, a North Carolina State commit ended up with the victory after 5 1/3 shutout innings on three hits and 10 strikeouts in the 2-0 win. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound righty from Tampa, Florida commanded the strike zone at a 70% clip in a dominant performance. Jezerinac, a 6-foot-2, 160-pound Kennesaw State commit from Kennesaw, Georgia, matched Knowles nearly pitch-for-pitch with 11 strikeouts and three hits allowed over his six-inning complete game. The two runs came at the expense of the No. 24 ranked prospect in the country Fabio Peralta. The University of Miami commit and left-handed hitting outfielder scored a run in the first inning after a walk, and singled in the sixth inning to account for both runs Jezerinac would allow in the tough loss. Right-handed pitcher Sebastian Berrios, a Florida International commit, came on in relief for Knowles and retired all five batters he faced with three strikeouts to earn the save. A great game between two well-coached teams and dominant pitching performances that saw 24 strikeouts between three quality pitchers.

-Jason Phillips

Canes National vs. Team Elite 16u Scout—Black; 16u WWBA
This game was absolutely loaded with talent as there were 24 power-five commits split between the two rosters. Two-way star Matthew Champion got the ball for Canes National and lived 88-91 mph with a true three pitch mix on display. He punched out seven and only gave up two runs in the third inning. On the other side, Auburn commit Christian Chatterton only gave up one run and struck out six. He has a powerful four pitch mix and lived in the upper-80s with the fastball. He has two distinctly shaped breaking balls and also mixed a power changeup in. Foster Apple and Aidan Paradine were the two bats that pushed across the runs. Apple hit a single in the third inning after a few walks and drove in what would be the winning run. Paradine hit a single in the next half inning to drive in a run. The game finished at 2-1 with Team Elite getting the win.

Midwest Aces Vs. Building Champions 16U Navy; WWBA Midwest Championship Game
There were a lot of factors that made this game really pretty interesting. First and foremost it being part of the most talented high school tournament Perfect Game Midwest has hosted in Kansas City. The game itself featured on one side of the field with Building Champions Navy, one of the more talented collections of players that play in the region. Including five current Power 5 commits, two other Division 1 commits and likely a handful of others that will end up on Division 1 rosters at some point. On the other side of the field with Midwest Aces, there was a collection of some of the more undervalued and pure competitive baseball players that we have in the region. For Building Champions Missouri commit Victor Christal and Kansas State commit Hudson Byrd combined to throw six scoreless innings. Texas commit Colin Guerra hit a triple and scored a run while two uncommitted bats hitting in the middle of the order, Cru Huenfeld and Lincoln Stephenson collected extra base hits and RBI. Midwest Aces Keaton Humphrey threw a complete game allowing just three runs and challenging a talented lineup consistently for seven innings. Wichita State commit Ethan Hampton and a trio of uncommitted position players, Micah McGavran (9 HR’s the last two seasons in PG Tournaments), Nate Scholte (three-for-three in the game) and Brayden Walker (go ahead double in the 7th inning) led the way for the Midwest Aces offense. No best game comes without a great ending and after being held scoreless for six innings the Midwest Aces put up four runs in the seventh to take the lead and went on to win the game. What made it the best game of the year for me wasn’t who won or lost; it was the talent, competitiveness, and high level baseball that is representative of baseball in the midwest as a whole.

We have to go back to early June for arguably the best game I saw this season in terms of 16U where the API Cavs matched up against Steel Scout 2024. It’s always a good day when you get to see Maryland commit Jake Yeager on the bump followed by East Carolina commit Nathan Wines for API, but Alex Strickland and Steel Scout gave the duo all they could handle in what turned out to be an extremely competitive game. Only one run was given up through the first four innings with Yeager running his fastball up to 87 mph (a number that has since jumped up to 89 mph this fall) posting nine punchouts to pair. Yeager and Strickland put on a pitching clinic with the latter also topping out at 87 mph while recording outs efficiently. When it turned into a bullpen game, it’s no surprise that Wines was too much for Steel to overcome with heavy heat upwards of 89 mph, sealing a 4-2 victory for API.

-AJ Denny

A game that featured a little bit of everything was a match between the South Florida Giants 2024 and Elite Squad 16u at the East Memorial Day Classic. The first inning featured a loud offensive display, with both teams trading blows and the Giants possessing a 5-4 lead. In the 4th inning, premier two-way talent Michael Torres came in from centerfield to hop on the mound. After a few batters, dark clouds rolled in, and the evening match was continued the next day. Torres would finish the outing with a gutsy performance, turning in four scoreless innings. Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the game was tied up at 7-7 with the middle of Elite Squad’s lineup coming up. They wasted no time, with the first three batters reaching base before Luis Suarez stroked a double to break the stalemate and win the game.

Best Tournament Performance I Saw
Within any given tournament, there may be a breakout performer or a top-of-the-class talent who cements themself at top with their showing, all of which will be told of here.

Jackson Bradfield (2024, Canton, Ga.)- the 6-foot, 195-pound right-handed hitting outfielder did not miss a barrel during the 17U/Underclass PG Fall Atlanta Open. The Kennesaw State commit was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for the East Cobb Astros 16U with a .833 batting average and 1.846 on-base plus slugging percentage. He finished with 10 hits and a walk in 13 plate appearances while driving in 11 runs and scoring another seven in only four games. Bradfield has been a force in the box for the Astros during the 2022 PG circuit and finishes with a .420 batting average and .530 on-base percentage over 202 plate appearances.

-Jason Phillips

What PJ Morlando did at the 16u WWBA is one of the most dominant hitter performances in recent memory. He hit an incredible .706 with ten extra base hits in seven games, including one homer, three triples, and six doubles. He also accounted for 23 runs, 14 RBI and nine runs scored. Morlando, deservedly so, saw a jump in the rankings after this performance and has continued to show why he is one of the top players in the country.

-Cam McElwaney

Noah Marschke: 2022 WWBA Midwest Championship

We’ll start by providing this tournament stat line at the WWBA Midwest Championship:

9 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 22 K’s

This was over two games and included a sixteen strikeout performance over six and a third innings on the mound. Yep all but three of the outs he recored came via a strikeout. I admittedly haven’t checked on this but if there was a strikeout rate over nine innings in a Perfect Game tournament better than this I would be pretty surprised. Marschke is a left-handed pitcher with fastball that gets into the mid 80’s, a breaking ball and a change up. The pitchability and deception he has on his fastball really stand out. He will change eye levels, switch up delivery timing and has a unique short stride that is a part of his delivery and really help his fastball play up well beyond the velocity. Was the Most Valuable Pitcher in two different events in 2022 and the single most impressive tournament performance I saw this past year.

-Blaine Peterson

This one’s pretty easy, as Dominick Carbone was an absolute machine at the 16U Super25 National Championship in Staten Island early July. Not only did the primary outfielder who's committed to Coastal Carolina put up video game numbers offensively with 10 hits and a final batting average of .556, but he also chucked seven innings of no run baseball with a fastball up to 89 mph. Just ridiculous stuff from the still super projectable 6-foot 170 pound lefty who truly is the definition of a two-way talent at the next level.

-AJ Denny

The Perfect Game 16U World Series is an absolute gantlet where you do not have one single game that has any brakes on it. What the Dulin’s Dodgers pitching staff did may never be repeated. During Dulin’s nine game championship run the staff did not surrender a single run. This included shutting out four teams that are in the top eleven in the Perfect Game end of the season rankings. Given the talent in the event, this is just something that may never be repeated.

-Jered Goodwin

Just a week after a scoreless four inning, one-hit, ten strikeout performance at WWBA Underclass, southpaw Talan Bell turned in an even more impressive outing on the biggest stage in Jupiter. Facing a very talented lineup, the Florida native had full command of his entire repertoire. Dotting his upper-80s fastball with angle to both sides of the plate and having his breaker on a string, Bell was nearly unhittable. He ended the night tossing five scoreless, one-hit frames, punching out a total of nine.

-Kyler Peterson

Favorite Single Game Moment
This is one of the those "wait, what did I just see" type moments where you have to almost confirm with yourself as to what just happened in front of you.

Rodney Pena (2024, Patterson, N.J.)- the 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed pitcher was electric on the mound during a two-inning stint for Citius Velocracy in the WWBA 2024 Grads or 16U National Championship. The Pittsburgh commit struck out two Cangelosi Sparks 16u Black batters over two hitless innings with zero walks on just 20 pitches. He ran the fastball into the low-90s and featured a plus 12/6 curveball in the 80-mph range with 3100+ spin rate. It was a highly contested game that finished in a 2-2 tie with both dugouts chirping back and forth as both teams brought their best in what the WWBA is known for year in and year out.

-Jason Phillips

Vanderbilt commit Brodie Johnston has always been a name on our radar but what he did in the Southeast Labor Day Classic was impressive. Johnston got a curveball in the middle of the plate in their third game of the tournament and hit it high into the trees in dead center field. The ball was still flying up when it left the park and had so much velocity on it that it knocked a branch off the tree. Most of the people at the field were left with their jaws dropped and it took me a second to find out what had just happened.

-Cam McElwaney

Joey Oakie: 2022 PGBA Midwest Turf
It’s not very often that you see a sixteen year old work the fastball into the mid 90s and hold 90+ velocity for seven innings. He did just that and much more on his way to tossing a seven inning complete game shutout with twelve strikeouts. Easily the most overpowering performance with pro level stuff that I saw this year. A 90-94 mph four-seam fastball that spun above 2500 RPM regularly. An upper 80’s power sinker that had the bottom just fall out of it, and a hard biting upper 70’s slider that looks like a potential plus pitch spinning above 2600 rpm. The stuff, strike throwing prowess, and ability to truly set up and put away hitters with multiple pitches made its mark for me as a favorite game moment in 2022.

-Blaine Peterson

This might be cheating a little bit here considering this comes from a 17U tournament, but New England World Series winner De Mortagne HS has eight 2024s rostered so I felt like respect was due. Coming all the way from Boucherville, MC, De Mortagne came into their first PG tournament and absolutely dominated, finishing with a 6-0 record and some hardware. Tell you what, you won’t find many squads more passionate and gritty than the Canadian based team who shut down a strong RCBC side in the championship and proceeded to celebrate like they won the World Series, because they did. Certainly made the tournament memorable and more enjoyable to watch and hoping we see more of them in the future.

-AJ Denny

The atmosphere surrounding the Alpha Prime and Ga Power 16U National game during pool play was really intense to begin with. Couple the fact that the game could decide which club should win the pool, it was also littered with massive 2024 prospects. Charlie Bates (Palo Alto, CA) had begun to make noise with his slick fielding ways and accurate left-handed bat he possesses. Terrence Kiel II (2024 Atlanta, GA) had annihilated baseballs since the start of the event and paired that with extreme game changing ability with his legs. Mason Brassfield (2024 Bakersfield, CA) was also on the mound and Austin Nye (2024 Rosefield, CA) in the lineup. The spot that won’t leave the brain is Bates hitting a missile liner that was certain to find green when suddenly Kiel II comes out of nowhere to make a fully extended diving catch to save extra bases. Brassfield twirled a complete game, Bates found a couple barrels and played a great shortstop. Kiel II pounded out two doubles. But that one pass of Bates bat and the instincts and athleticism of Kiel II set the tone for both budding prospects leading into the late summer push.

-Jered Goodwin

Back in June, entering Junior National, there were certainly high expectations for the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Duke commit Andre Modugno. I think it is safe to say he surpassed those expectations, running a 6.54 60-yard dash, reaching 97 mph on throws from the outfield, taking an excellent round of infield and showing serious juice in batting practice. As if Modugno’s workouts weren’t impressive enough, the New Jersey native hit a nuke in the first game of the showcase, traveling 394 feet. The long ball capped about as strong of a performance as you can have at Junior National.

-Kyler Peterson

Biggest Showcase Breakout Performer
The PG Showcase schedule spans from coast to coast and each one serves as a spring board for prospects across the country. Here, our staff will look back on some of the players who made a name for themselves in regard to their next level of play.

Adrian Jimenez (2024, Sugar Hill, Ga.)- a 13U Select Festival Player that had been quietly putting up solid offensive numbers at PG events for years really showed his skill set at the 2022 WWBA Workout Showcase (June 23). The 5-foot-10, 175-pound middle infielder has always hit with his advanced bat-to-ball skills and showed his plus hands on defense during the workout. He displayed smooth fielding actions to both sides with a quick first step and quick release with an accurate throwing arm moving around with more velocity when he needed it during game play. Jimenez is an uncommitted Junior at Lanier High School that has the skills and baseball IQ to play and excel at the next level.

-Jason Phillips

Bonn, a Kennesaw State commit, started to show flashes of what was to come in the later summer tournaments and continued that trend at the Fall Southeast Showcase. Bonn took an impressive round of batting practice, hitting a few balls off the wall and spraying hard liners all over the field. The primary catcher also looked good behind the plate as he recorded a 1.95 pop-time and all of the throws were directly on the bag. He also worked out in the outfield and recorded throws up to 89 mph. The really impressive workout portion was followed by a solid in-game performance as he collected a few base hits.

-Cam McElwaney

Julius Ejike-Charles: 2022 Sunshine Midwest Showcase
First time I saw him was at the 2022 Sunshine Midwest Showcase and it didn’t take him long before he looked like the best player on both sides of the baseball at the showcase. Ran a 6.68 60-yard dash, showed above average arm strength with accuracy from the outfield, collected multiple extra-base hits at the plate and showed a three pitch-mix with a mid 80’s fastball as a left-handed pitcher on the mound. It was the start of a big summer for him as he went on and earned an invite to the JR National showcase and made three different Perfect Game all-tournament teams as both a hitter and a pitcher. All ultimately leading to a commitment to Tulane University in the fall.

-Blaine Peterson

As recently stated in the Northeast Superlatives article, Chase Harlan is a dude. He proved that at the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Prospect Showcase by immediately impressing with a 6.79 60-yard dash and then posting 94 mph across the diamond as well as a 97 mph exit velo. I’d be willing to bet that there are few ‘24s in the nation that are more athletic than the Cincinnati commit from Doylestown, Pennsylvania, who does everything with natural ability and effortlessness that truly does make him stand out from everyone else on the field. Harlan is currently ranked 198 nationally in his class.

-AJ Denny

In no way was Anson Seibert (2024 Overland Park, KS) not a known prospect, it was just a performance that helped both catapult and solidify that he is a truly elite arm heading into the 2023 evaluation period. The struck out all six batters he faced in his two-innings of work and got a wildly high nine swing and misses. Eight of those empty swings came off the heater that worked up to 93-mph, and he seemed to just be willing to bully hitters as he challenged them working north and south with the power pitch. He did get a chance to show a hard slider that picked up a whiff on the last pitch he threw to strikeout the side for the second straight inning. You could hear a pin drop as his impressive outing took shape.

-Jered Goodwin

Cade Oleary burst on the scene in a big way in 2022, and Junior National was the performance that opened many eyes. The lanky and uber-projectable 6-foot-4, 175-pound right-hander worked mostly 89-90, topping at 91. Even more impressive than the velocity was the polish of his three pitch repertoire, also featuring a big curveball and heaving fading change. Oleary earned an invite to the Underclass All-American games and continued to impress, eventually committing to Mississippi State.

-Kyler Peterson

Uncommitted No More
With players committing at all different stages of their careers, we'll take a minute here to look at players who were uncommitted at the time our scouts saw them before they gave their verbal and announced their commitment to a collegiate program.

Brayden May (2023, Mableton, Ga.)- the 5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed pitcher had only pitched a total of 10 innings during the summer PG circuit but that didn’t stop him from making an impression with his stuff and 19/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the limited time on the bump. May went to the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Florida for 5 Star National-Black as an uncommitted Senior for Whitefield Academy High School. And after two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, no walks and no hits allowed against USA Prime National, he was quickly committed to the University of Tennessee. He runs the fastball up to 90 mph from a high slot release and features a changeup and power breaking ball in the 3000 RPMs. May took full advantage of his opportunity down in Jupiter and returned as a member of the No.15 ranked Volunteers recruiting class.

-Jason Phillips

Grant Hollister, a now Michigan commit, was uncommitted for the majority of the summer which is when I first laid eyes on him. The Missouri native has a short swing with power to the path and finds the barrel very often. He’s a sure-handed defender at third base with a plus-arm and should be able to stick there. He’s a good runner, running a 6.69 at Junior National and has shown the ability to swipe a bag occasionally. Really like this pickup for the Wolverines as they go into Missouri to get one of the better bats in the country.

-Cam McElwaney

Anson Seibert: Royals Scout Team/Blue Valley Southwest HS
I think people have known about Seibert for awhile now but it’s really just within the last nine months or so that he’s started to get the national attention he now has. I saw him for the first time in a high school game in April when he came in for a relief appearance after a rain delay. Anyone with him frame on the mound is going to stand out, when you add a 90+ fastball and a three pitch-mix it stands out even more. Fast forward a month and he’s part of a 5A Kansas state championship team. Fast forward a couple more months and all of the sudden he’s throwing 95 WWBA National Championship and participating in the JR National showcase. Fast forward another month and he’s striking out every hitter he faces the PG Underclass All-American Games. Now he currently ranks as Perfect Games top arm in the 2024 class and is committed to the University of Tennessee which currently ranks number one for the class of 2024 recruiting rankings. A ranking that he’s a major part of.

-Blaine Peterson

Another member of the Northeast Superlatives, it didn’t take long for UConn to scoop up hidden gem Drew Smith who came out of nowhere and ran it up to 91 mph on the bump during the New England World Series in Massachusetts. With this being his only PG event, the sample size is small but boy is it electric with easy arm speed and projectability remaining in the 6-foot-3 210-pound frame. As the off speed arsenal continues to develop and refine, the Huskies could have yet another monster arm on their hands in what adds to a stacked 2024 class.

-AJ Denny

The aforementioned Kiel II was uncommitted a lot longer than some of his high-level prospect peers. Heading into the 16U World Series, Terrence Kiel II (2024 Atlanta, GA) remained uncommitted while he had a tremendous tournament. He produced eight hits with four of those being for extra bases. The aforementioned Kiel II also took hits away in centerfield and used that speed to also steal four bases. The do-it-all player committed to Texas A&M soon after, which is a perfect fit for him for several reasons.

-Jered Goodwin

With tremendous hand speed and physicality, Aukai (Jaydon) Kea has always stood out to me as one of the higher ceiling bats in the class. After seeing the Hawaiian rake in-game in a couple of times in 2021, I was able to see him take batting practice at Junior National, which really sold me on the upside. The backstop really put himself on the radar and announced his verbal commitment to Vanderbilt in November.

Hits from a wider base from the left side, starts early and consistently gets to launch on time. Loose barrel turn with adjustability and length through the middle, showing the ability to create lift and impact out front. Coming off a strong junior season at Crean Lutheran and should be a priority uncommitted follow this summer. Evan Stroner (2027, Huntington Beach, Calif). Impressive...

Despite a lengthy rain delay, EBC never lost focus, relying on contributions throughout the lineup and another strong pitching performance to secure the win. “This being our first [win] of the summer, we have an amazing group right here,” head coach Rodd Griggs said. “Some of the guys I’ve had for years, some of the guys just joined us this summer, but it’s an amazing group.” EBC’s championship performance reflected the depth that carried the club throughout the tournament. Southeast Elite Scout Notes: Days 3-5

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Southeast Elite Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Auburn commit Brennan Neal (2027, Columbus, Ga.) had a good showing on Sunday on the mound, putting the clean, athletic delivery on display in an inning of work. Neal worked in the 90-93 range with the fastball with plenty of life, and showed some run to it when working to the arm side. Neal also worked in a tight slider in the upper 70s, but also showed confidence in a fading changeup in the mid 80s. Neal also has room to add strength to his lanky frame, which could be big for him to continue to add velocity. South Florida commit Taylor Casson (2026, Atlanta, Ga.) had an impressive showing on the hill with the stuff and results, going 5 innings of no-hit baseball with 10 strikeouts. The fastball worked in the 89-92 range with downhill angle and tail, and was in the zone often. He worked a 3-pitch mix, showing some impressive swing and miss stuff...

High School Top 50 Update: June 2

Tyler Russo
Article Image
With another few weeks in the book of the high school season, we’ve already had state champions crowned with playoffs happening in some northern states. There have been some upsets so there has been a good amount of movement in the National High School Top-50. We have a new number-one this update with Tomball (TX) taking over the top spot and will be playing for a state championship this week.
