Most Likely to Make a Huge Jump in the Rankings in 2023:

Ian Haines, C, Buckeye, AZ
Haines made a substantial jump in the latest state rankings to be released, but expect the backstop to begin to get noticed on the national scene next year. A lean athletic frame and an aggressive mindset allows Haines to impact games in a multitude of ways. Advanced barrel feel at the plate helps produce consistent gap to gap power that will only continue to develop. Quick speed plays on the bases and allows for extra bags to be taken when they present themselves. The athleticism translates behind the plate and combines with a strong arm resulting in impressive catch-and-throw ability. Haines is a well-rounded player who is really starting to get a feel for his game.

Nolan Eberwein, OF/RHP, Las Vegas, NV
It is tough to tell which side of the ball Eberwein will end up long term given the impressive two-way ability he possesses. The Bishop Gorman features a projectable 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame that will only continue to get stronger. There legit left-handed power bat potential to the profile. Eberwein has already shown quality in-game pop, posting an impressive 1.056 OPS with 10 extra-base hits in just 27 at-bats in PG events this year. On the mound, the righthander works into the mid-80’s with more coming down the line and shows feel for a quality breaking ball. Eberwein currently is a Top 500 player, but could see a substantial jump next year as the development on both sides of the ball continue to take place.

Ky McGary, OF, Phoenix, Ariz.
McGary had one of the stronger years from start to finish in ‘22. The Arizona State commit recorded a .414/.519/.586 slashline with 10 extra-base hits and 11 stolen bases in the spring, followed that by a 1.179 OPS in PG events throughout the summer and fall. It is an under the radar profile that can have a real offensive impact on a lineup. The power should continue to develop, which could turn McGary into a legit power/speed threat with athleticism and on-base skills. That has the makings of a high-end profile that could be amongst the best in the state.

Most Likely to Hit .500 in PG Events in 2023:

Caleb Danzeisen, OF/2B, Laveen, Ariz.
The class of 2025 position player group out of Arizona is extremely strong and Danzeisen might have the best hit tool of everyone. The Arizona commit hit .420 over 79 plate appearances this year in PG events, showing a consistent hit tool throughout the summer and fall circuit. Danzeisen utilizes a balanced left-handed stroke with the ability to manipulate the barrel and drive balls hard consistently. The pitch recognition is advanced for the age, as Danzeisen has shown the ability to stay back and drive offspeed pitches the other way. The hit tool is a part of an impressive offensive skill set that could very well hit .500 next year.

Ryker Waite, MIF, Queen Creek, Ariz.
Another strong hitter in the ‘25 class who has the potential to hit .500 is Ryker Waite. The Oregon State commit holds a lifetime average near .400 in PG events and hit .407 as a freshman for Queen Creek last spring. The switch-hitter displays a short, compact swing from each side of the plate. Quick hands produces advanced bat speed with an approach that allows for the entire field to be used. Plus speed adds another element to Waite’s game, bringing the ability to bunt for a hit into play. Waite is one of the more fun players to watch in the region and the hit tool is the primary reason why.

Cade Collins, SS, Fort Collins, Colo.
Collins has a steady track record at the plate and has already shown the ability to hit .500 over the course of the year, posting a .517 average in ‘20. The middle infielder displays a simple left-handed swing that stays balanced and finds barrels regularly. A slightly lofted path gets on plane early and stays in the zone for a long time. Collins can recognize pitches early and stay on breaking balls well. It is an advanced hit tool that produces hard contact consistently and could very well post a .500 average next year.

Most Likely to Make a Velo Jump into the Mid-90s in 2023:

Athan Kroll, RHP, Brighton, Colo.
Kroll sits atop the Colorado rankings because of his present stuff, but his projectability is just as interesting. The righthander features a tall, lean build at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds. The frame continues to add strength and arm speed continues to develop. The fastball got up to 91 mph this year with easy life out of hand, suggesting more velocity is coming. Kroll has shown the ability to continue to add velocity in recent years and very well could be in the mid-90’s by ‘23.

Trey Gregory - Alford, RHP, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Gregory-Alford is yet another Colorado arm with plenty of projectability and intriguing velocity potential. The recent Virginia commit features an imposing frame on the mound at 6-foot-5, 225-pounds. Long levers, quality strength, and a quick arm produce a riding fastball that can overwhelm hitters. The offering sits in the low-90’s presently with more very likely to come. It would not be a surprise to see the righthander running it into the mid-90’s consistently next year.

Naulivou Lauaki, RHP, Springville, Utah
Lauaki is a big, physical righthander who burst onto the scene in ‘22, showing power stuff on the bump. The Oregon commit displays plenty of intent down the mound, attacking hitters with the fastball. The impressive heater that can overwhelm hitters often, showing the ability to miss plenty of bats this year. The offering currently sits in the low-90’s but look for that velocity to continue to rise as Lauaki has all the makings of becoming a dominant power arm who sits mid-90 or higher consistently.

Most Likely to Back Up a Breakout in 2022:

Cj Mascaro, OF, Saratoga Springs, Utah
Mascaro had a quality ‘21 campaign but really burst onto the national scene in ‘22, making his mark as one of the better players in the entire region. The dynamic outfielder showcased the ability to produce no matter who the competition was all year long. The top ranked player out of Utah posted a 1.043 OPS with 11 extra-base hits in 61 at-bats in PG events. A smooth, left-handed swing finds the barrel regularly resulting in solid all-fields power. Advanced bat to ball skills and strikezone awareness lead to quality at-bats on a consistent basis. It is an extremely mature offensive approach and swing that should only continue to develop and get better.

Colton Boardman, MIF, Las Vegas, Nev.
Boardman made his name known throughout the ‘22 circuit and will only continue to rise up the rankings. The left-handed hitting middle infielder posted an impressive .405/.537/500 slashline across 54 plate appearances in PG events. A smooth, balanced stroke allows for balls to be hit hard to all fields. The offensive skill set profiles well in the leadoff spot, as Boardman walked twice as many times as he struck out and stole 12 bases in just 18 games. Athleticism plays well on the dirt and makes for a well-rounded skill set. Boardman is one of the more intriguing uncommitted players in the region and should produce another strong campaign next year.

Gunner Geile, OF, Tucson, Ariz.
Geile put together an impressive year in ‘22, showing the ability to compete in high level events. The Arizona commit posted a .373/.476/.647 slashline with 11 extra-base hits across 64 plate appearances. The left-handed hitting outfielder utilizes a clean, lofted path with the ability to spray balls to all fields. There is quality power present with plenty more coming down the line. The speed plays on the bases, allowing for extra bases to be taken often. Geile is one of the top players out of Arizona in the ‘24 class and should continue to show why come ‘23.

Most Likely to Lead the Region in Home Runs in 2023

Easton Shelton, 3B/1B, Las Vegas, Nev.
Shelton is the prototypical slugger with a strong, physical build at 6-foot-5, 225-pounds. A simple swing with strong hands at contact and the ability to lift balls consistently allows for advanced all-fields power to show up regularly in-game. The UNLV commit features some of the best power in the region and should produce a good amount of long balls as a driving force in the middle of an impressive Bishop Gorman lineup this spring. Shelton led the state of Nevada in home runs last year, hitting a total of 12 home runs, and likely will do it again.

Miller Durham, 1B, Las Vegas, Nev.
If anyone can contest Shelton for the Nevada home run crown, Durham might be the guy to do it. The Point Loma Nazarene commit launched eight home runs last spring for Faith Lutheran and hit another three in PG events this year. The left-handed hitting slugger features a strong, compact build and creates impressive barrel whip through the zone. It allows for the bat head to get out front and produce easy pullside power. Durham could very well come away with the home run title.

Hagen Wright, OF, Mesa, Ariz.
Wright not only possesses some of the best power in the ‘25 class but in the entire region itself. It would not be a surprise if the slugger leads the area in home runs next year, despite being just a sophomore. Wright features a strong 6-foot-5, 215-pound frame that can drive baseball with authority, posting exit velocities near the triple digits. Quick hands accelerate the barrel through the zone on a clean, lofted path. The power plays to all fields and can show up regularly. Last spring, Wright hit three home runs in just 46 at-bats as a freshman. Expect that total to rise as Wright should take over a consistent role this spring.

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...
