College Top 25: May 30
After a wild week of conference tournament action, we are releasing our updated predictions on the Field of 64. While the host sights were announced late last night, we won’t find out the seeding until the NCAA D-I College Baseball Selection Show at 12:00 EST today. As usual, there are going to be some real surprises and unavoidably, some severe disappointments.
Here are some things that caught our eye:
The ACC looks like they will be the big winner this year as they have been awarded four host sites and by the looks of things, will get a total of 10 teams into the Field of 64. The UNC Tarheels, who looked like they were in danger of missing the ACC Tournament a month ago, are on a remarkable run. They have gone 15-2 since getting swept at UVA back in April and now have a No. 4 RPI and were rewarded a host sight. On the flip side, Notre Dame once again endures massive disappointment. They won the ACC by four games last year and were not awarded a national seed, forcing them to go on the road to Starkville for the Super Regional, and we know how that turned out. This year they finished second in the ACC Atlantic, have a No. 13 RPI and went 2-1 in the ACC Tournament and were snubbed from getting a bid at all this go-around.
The SEC was also awarded four host sites, but we project they will only get 8 teams into the field. Auburn is an interesting case as they were awarded a bid to host at least the first round. We think they are a quality team, but they finished fourth in the SEC West and went 0-1 in the SEC Tournament. So, we assume they are riding their No. 14 RPI and total body of work. Two teams that look like they will come up empty today are Kentucky and Ole Miss. Kentucky made a valiant run in Hoover last week, going 3-2 in the conference tournament, but they finished sixth in the East and the RPI of 52 is too much to overcome. Also, we think Ole Miss is in trouble after finishing fifth in the West and going 0-1 last week in the tournament.
The Pac-12 looks like it will only have four teams in the field with two host sites in Stanford and Oregon State. Both teams are playing like national title contenders and Stanford could be the most dangerous team in the country right now.
East Carolina ran away with the American Athletic Conference regular season crown and tournament title as they have won 18 in a row. However, they only have two wins all year against the RPI top-50, so it will be interesting to see if they garner a national seed.
The Sun Belt and Big 10 look like they will have a banner year with four teams and three teams getting bids, respectively. Georgia Southern is riding their RPI, that was top-10 most of the year, to their first-ever host opportunity and Maryland landed a bid as well.
Regardless, the college game has never been in a better place, and we are looking forward to the next couple weeks as we head towards Omaha.
