Collin McKinney, RHP, Clear Creek (Texas)

It has been a really impressive spring for McKinney as he’s seemed to turn in performances with double digit strikeouts and limited hits on a consistent basis and this latest outing was another on that same path as he went seven innings, allowed just a few hits on a couple mistakes and struck out 16 against a talented Clear Falls team. It was really strong stuff from the jump as he opened the game living at 92-94 mph with the fastball before settling more in the 88-92 mph range after a couple of innings, getting more at the top part of both ranges than anything else. There’s a ton of life to the pitch and the carry he has to the top of the zone allows him to find success there while he can also get a good bit downhill and get to either half of the plate. It’s a quick and more compact arm than you’d see out of someone at his size, and he maintains that compactness on both the changeup and breaking ball. He’s shown an ability to turn in some hammer curveballs in the 78-79 range and he’s got the components on the pitch to project well longer-term while the changeup serves as usable now. Overall, he’s rather athletic for being 6-foot-6, 215 pounds and that, paired with the command of all three of his pitches (74% strikes) and the ability to miss bats in bunches this spring, there’s some definite draft intrigue there.
