Week 2 College Baseball Preview

Photo: Texas Longhorns (Texas Athletics)
After what has been a downright exciting first week of the season, we head into the second weekend slate of the 2022 season. There have already been numerous upsets both on the weekend and the midweeks as, being in the infantile stages of the season, there’s still big potential for chaos. With that being said, let’s dive into the weekend.

Ranked Bounce-Backs
Two national title contenders went down last weekend as Vanderbilt and Mississippi State both lost their weekend series’ at home to Oklahoma State and Long Beach State, respectively. Nothing in college baseball is a given but on paper, both squads will have an excellent opportunity to bounce back versus Army and Northern Kentucky, respectively. East Carolina and UC Irvine have it a bit tougher. The Pirates were the only ranked team swept and now have a home-and-home with in-state rival UNC, while Irvine hosts upstart Grand Canyon.

Round Rock Classic
This year’s Round Rock Classic features two top-10 teams in No. 2 Stanford and No. 9 Arkansas along with Louisiana and Indiana. Stanford and Arkansas both took care of business against Fullerton and Illinois State, respectively, while Louisiana had a big home series win over ranked UC Irvine. Indiana was a surprise as they were swept by Clemson, but they undoubtedly have talent. Look for the stars to take center stage as we’re expecting a big series from Stanford’s Brock Jones and Arkansas’ Robert Moore. Our Kyler Peterson will be on hand for coverage from the event all weekend.

Oregon State, Class of the Pac-12?
Oregon State moved to 5-0 after a 10-run victory on Thursday night and they’ve now outscored opponents by 50 runs in that span. Following a dominant opening weekend in Arlington, Arizona was crushed by Grand Canyon in the midweek and UCLA dropped two midweek games to Pepperdine and Omaha, respectively. Oregon lost three out of four in Opening Weekend and Stanford’s series against Fullerton had its moments of doubt. It’s obviously just Week 1 but Oregon State has been as impressive as any team in the country and is quickly becoming must-see TV.

Vin's Picks
There’s no doubt that I’m riding high following my two upset picks over the first weekend, but Weekend 2 features a bit less to choose from in terms of extremely compelling series. Texas looks wholly dominant and the Tide played a very tight series against Xavier, so I expect the Horns to keep on rolling. Nebraska-TCU should be a truly compelling series as Nebraska still expects to be the class of the Big 10, though I think TCU’s pitching and veteran bats should lead them. Louisiana Tech is one of the hottest teams in the country following their midweek win over in-state rival LSU, and though there’s letdown potential here I expect the Love Shack to keep on rocking. Both Charlotte and West Virginia were in discussions during this week’s Top 25 and I’m buying into the young talent for the Mountaineers in the way of their power arms along with freshmen bats led by Grant Hussey, who went deep three times last weekend. DBU had a disappointing opening weekend, but they’ve still been arguably the most consistent program in Texas, but Sam Houston is riding high right now and I’m playing the hot hand.

Coach's Picks

Alabama at No. 1 Texas
The Crimson Tide is off to a perfect 5-0 start to the 2022 season, but this weekend they head to the Lone Star State to take on the nation's top team.  Bama’s pitching staff has been terrific, sporting a team ERA of 3.20 and a combined strikeout-to-walk ratio of almost 3-to-1.  The offense has been on point as well with a team average of .329 and scoring just under 7 runs per game.  However, the Longhorns are 5-0 too, and have absolutely dominated their opponents in every aspect of the game thus far.  On the offensive side they are batting .322 as a team, slugging .520, and have blistered the other side with a 53-to-7 run differential.  On the bump, it’s been even more of an onslaught.  The team ERA is a microscopic 0.60, with a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and an opponent’s team average of .144 in five games.  Both teams are perfect heading into the series, but only Texas will stay that way, looks like a sweep for the Longhorns.

Tulane at No. 23 Louisiana Tech
It’s not very often that you can say a venue that is only two years old has a reputation for being one of the more difficult places for opponents to play.  But that’s exactly what has happened at the Love Shack in Ruston.  The fans are invested, they come out early, they stay late, and their team is really good.  While the Bulldogs are only batting .279 as a team, they are scoring 8 runs per game and have only made 1 error on the defensive side so far.  The pitching staff owns a gaudy 52-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio and opponent's average of just .212 as well.  Similarly, Tulane is scoring more than 8 runs per game and plays a virtually flawless defense.  The pitching staff sports an ERA of just 2.75 and limits opponents to a .239 average.  It’s hard to get two more evenly matched clubs, but the advantage tilts to Tech at home.  It’ll be at least 27 innings of tightly-contested ball, but the Bulldogs take the series 2-1.

Nebraska at No. 8 TCU
Nebraska played a four-game series Opening Weekend and ran into a buzzsaw in Sam Houston State.  They find themselves with a 1-3 record heading into a difficult place to get things right in Lupton Baseball Stadium.  We like the Huskers. They do have high-end returning talent from last year’s team that came within a couple outs of winning the Fayetteville Regional.  They simply haven’t started clicking yet, as they are batting .271 as a team and have yet to hit a ball out of the park.  On top of that, the defense is averaging almost 2 errors and 4 walks per game.  TCU on the other hand is generating a ton of traffic on the bases offensively with a .427 on-base percentage and have swiped an eye-popping 10 bags already.  They put a lot of pressure on the opponents with their active style with the sticks and are averaging 8 runs per game.  Their pitching staff is deep and 10 of the 15 pitchers that have made appearances have yet to surrender a run.

West Virginia at Charlotte
As the weather demands, West Virginia will spend the first few weeks on the road and their trek to warmer climates has heated up their bats.  At the moment, the Mountaineers look like one of the most complete and scariest offenses in the nation.  Their slash line as a team is .329/.555/.421 and they have hit 13 doubles, 6 home runs and stolen 9 bags already.  They pressure opposing defenses in every aspect possible and are averaging over 9 runs per game.  Charlotte was high-octane with the bats last year but they’re only batting .260 currently and but have somehow manufactured an average of 7 runs per game.  The concerning thing for them is the defense has been a bit porous as seen by their .935 fielding percentage.  The pitching staff has been efficient with an ERA of 3.24 and have only surrendered 7 free passes to date.  It will be a battle of the Mountaineers' sticks against the 49ers' arms, but West Virginia will head back north with the 2-1 series win.

Sam Houston State at Dallas Baptist
We can’t say that Sam Houston State’s start to the 2022 season has been the biggest surprise, but it has been one of the loudest statements.  They are a well-rounded club that just does what it takes to win ball games.  They don’t blow your mind with their offense, as they are batting just a touch over .300, have hit only 1 round tripper and have only swiped 4 bags.  Their team ERA is a respectable 3.89, and they’ve given up more hits than innings pitched but they won’t walk you.  Plus, they eliminate contact at a high level with their almost 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a team.  Dallas Baptist has not had a good run on the mound thus far, with an uncharacteristically-high team ERA of 5.54.  The biggest concern is that they are issuing over 7 free passes per game and creating a lot of opportunity for opposing hitters.  The offense is loaded with free swingers looking to do damage.  They are averaging 2 home runs and almost 3 stolen bases per game, but they have already punched out 44 times while only walking 19 times.  It will be conflicting styles of play in Dallas this weekend with the Bearkats taking 2-of-3.

College Top 25: Final Update

Vincent Cervino

With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii Tackles 14u West WS

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...

Austin Lyons (2028, Cibolo, Texas) put on a display for Canes Southwest Prime 16U. Went 7-14 at the plate with a pair of doubles and triples, while driving in 13 runs. He won Tournament MVP for his efforts. Physical left-handed frame with feel to hit to all fields. Utilizes the middle of the field as well as the opposite field efficiently. Should be a force to be reckoned with as he grows into some more power. Evan Rosales (2027, Houston, Texas) was dominant on the mound for HP 2027 Allen. Went five shutout innings over the weekend, surrendering just one hit and two walks while striking out ten. Fastball lives 83-87 with some carry. Curveball is a heavy 12/6 downer at 69-74. North-south approach with a super steep release. Showed some really good feel for the zone and sequenced effectively to keep hitters off balance.
