Jupiter Through the Years

Photo: GBG Navy 2021 (Perfect Game)
Sometimes it seems like the rich history of the WWBA World Championships is overlooked due to all the building excitement of each year’s event. We decided it was well worth it to take a look backwards for a couple years, back to 2010 specifically, to remember some of the highlights from recent Jupiter history.

2020

Champion: GBG Navy 2021
Runner-Up: Power Baseball 2021

GBG became the first West Coast-based team to win since the Christian Yelich-led ABD Bulldogs in 2008, defeating Power Baseball 9-1 in the finals after narrowly edging the underclass Canes 17U Prospects 6-5 in the semifinals.

Most Valuable Player: INF-RHP Carson Williams (GBG)
Williams was only ranked 148th nationally entering the event but saw his prospect profile shoot up based on his .417-0-10 performance at the plate and his three shutout innings, topping out at 94 mph, on the mound. He went on to become the 28th overall pick in the 2021 draft by Tampa Bay.

Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Dennis Colleran (GBG)
Colleran was one of the few non-West Coast players on the GBG roster and the Massachusetts native came up big, working 6 2/3 innings of relief over three games, allowing no runs and two hits and striking out 12 while topping out at 95 mph. He is now a freshman at Northeastern.

2019

Champion: Florida Burn 2020 Platinum
Runner-Up: Dirtbags

The Burn rolled to their second straight Jupiter title, finishing with a perfect 8-0 record and steamrolling the Dirtbags in the finals, 11-2. They had narrowly reached the championship game, outlasting the Padres Scout Team/ECB 2-1 in nine innings in the semifinal.

Most Valuable Player: C Mac Guscette (Florida Burn)
A PG All-American and the Burn’s on-field leader, Guscette had an outstanding tournament, going 10-for-22 (.455) with three doubles, five RBI and six runs scored. He started 16 games as a freshman at Florida in 2021, hitting .298-0-9.

Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Ben Sieracki (Dirtbags)
Sieracki threw eight shutout innings for the Dirtbags over two appearances, including five shutout innings in their 7-2 win over the Scorpions Founders Club in the semifinals. He pitched primarily out of the bullpen at Elon as a freshman in 2021, going 1-2, with a 5.62 ERA in 24 innings.

2018

Champion: Florida Burn Platinum
Runner-Up: Canes National

The Burn won their first Jupiter title by denying the Canes organization their fifth such honor, winning the championship game 2-0 to finish with a perfect 8-0 record. The champion Burn reached the finals by defeating the East Coast Sox in one semifinal, while the Canes edged GBG Marucci 2-1 in nine innings in the other semifinal.

Co-Most Valuable Player: SS Josh Rivera (Florida Burn), C Kevin Parada (GBG Marucci)
Rivera went 7-for-16 at the plate with a home run and six RBI along with playing outstanding defense for the pitching/defense-oriented Burn. He has started at shortstop since the first game of his freshman season in 2020 and hit .253-5-26 for the Gators in 2021.

PG All-American Parada had a dominating event at the plate, going 11-for-23 (.478) with four doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI. He hit .318-9-42 with 20 doubles at Georgia Tech in 2021 and is considered a potential high first round pick in the 2022 draft.

Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Tyler Nesbitt (Florida Burn)
Nesbitt only threw one game but it was a dominating five-inning start against CBA Marucci in the quarterfinals where he struck out 10 and allowed only two hits and no runs. The hard-throwing right-hander had a great start to his career at Florida in 2020 before the season was cancelled, but missed the 2021 season after undergoing TJ surgery.

2017

Champion: Canes Prospects
Runner-Up: FTB/Giants Scout Team

The underclass Canes Prospects edged FTB/Giants Scout Team 8-7 in nine innings to claim the championship in a baseball marathon caused when rain on Friday forced both teams to play six games total Sunday and Monday. Ironically, the two teams had emerged from the same pool, with FTB winning 5-3 in their earlier matchup on Sunday morning.

Most Valuable Player: OF Preston Hartsell (FTB/Giants Scout Team)
A PG All-American who won the Rawlings Home Run Derby at the Classic, Hartsell hit .421 for the tournament with three extra-base hits and seven RBI. He spent two years as a backup at Southern California and did not play D-I baseball in 2021.

Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Dylan Delucia (Canes Prospects)
DeLucia pitched 11 2/3 innings over two appearances, allowing only one earned run while striking out 17 hitters versus only three walks. He started his college career at College of Charleston before pitching the last two seasons at Northwest Florida CC and is expected to be a starter at Mississippi this coming spring.

2016

Champion: Dirtbags
Runner-Up: Team Elite Prime

After sharing the 2010 Jupiter championship, the Dirtbags claimed their first full championship by defeating Team Elite Prime 4-2 in the finals and finishing 7-0-1. After pitching had dominated the championship for many years, it was the Dirtbag’s bats that drove the team as they scored 58 runs in eight games.

Most Valuable Player: 3B Davis Schneider (Dirtbags)
Schneider was Dirtbag’s big bat, hitting .409 with five doubles and two home runs while picking up both nine runs and nine RBI. No swing was more important for his team all week than Schneider’s three-run home run in their 3-0 quarterfinal win over CBA Marucci. Although he had a scholarship to Rutgers, Schneider signed with the Blue Jays as a 28th round pick in 2017 and hit .229-9-23 in 47 games between the two A levels in 2021.

Co-Most Valuable Pitchers: RHP Ethan Hankins (Team Elite Prime), RHP Mason Hickman (Dirtbags)
Hankins and Hickman both put up dominating performances in their team’s semifinal wins, with Hankins throwing 6 1/3 shutout innings in a 1-0 win over AZ T-Rex Rawlings while Hickman worked five shutout innings in a 8-0 Dirtbags win over the Midland Redskins.

Hankins spent time as the No. 1 ranked player in the 2018 PG class rankings before battling injuries his senior year and dropping to the 35th overall pick by the Indians in the 2018 draft. Hickman went 19-2 in his two-plus years at Vanderbilt and was the Indians 5th round pick in the 2020 draft. He went 8-8, with a 4.88 ERA in 20 starts in High A in 2021.

2015

Champion: EvoShield Canes
Runner-Up: Team EvoShield

The Canes, with a roster featuring six PG All-Americans, won their unprecedented third-straight Jupiter title, going a perfect 8-0. Ominously it seemed at the time, they defeated their own underclass team, Team Evoshield (7-1-1) by a 9-0 score in the finals. The Canes' 12-pitcher staff only allowed one run and 15 hits over 50 innings.

Most Valuable Player: C Brandon Martorano (EvoShield Canes)
Martorano led the Canes in RBI with seven and in OPS at 1.360 while going 6-for-15 with four extra-base hits and also handling the bulk of the catching duties for the dominant Canes pitching staff. He caught for three years at North Carolina, the last two as a starter, before being drafted in the 16th round by the Giants in 2019. He split 2021 between High A and AA, hitting .237-8-28.

Most Valuable Pitcher: Matt Manning (EvoShield Canes)
Manning backed up his PG All-American credentials by throwing seven shutout innings over two appearances, giving up only one hit while striking out 14 hitters. Nine months later he was the Tigers first round pick (9th overall) and made his big league debut with Detroit in 2021.

2014

Champion: EvoShield Canes
Runner-Up: Orlando Scorpions/Mets Scout Team

The Canes won their second-consecutive Jupiter championship in much more convincing fashion than their first, outscoring their opponents 48-8 in eight wins, including an 8-2 win over the Orlando Scorpions/Mets Scout Team (7-1) in the championship game.

Most Valuable Player: C Brad Debo (EvoShield Canes)
Debo shined in the playoffs, driving in seven runs in four games while hitting a pair of doubles in the championship game. He also caught the Canes pitching staff that allowed only five earned runs in eight games. Debo went on to catch for four years at North Carolina State.

Most Valuable Pitcher: Tyler Holton (Orlando Scorpions/Mets Scout Team)
Holton threw seven shutout innings in the Scorpions epic 2-0, 10-inning win over GBG Marucci in the semifinals, after throwing three additional shutout innings during pool play, striking out 13 hitters in total. Holton spent three years at Florida State, going 10-3 with 144 strikeouts in 119 innings as a sophomore, before being picked by the Diamondbacks in the 9th round in 2018. He spent 2021 between AA and AAA.

2013

Champion: EvoShield Canes

Runner-Up: Florida Burn

The 7-0-1 Canes came up clutch the entire championship, winning five one-run games and tying another, including 4-3 wins over the Orlando Scorpions in the semifinals and the 7-1 Florida Burn in the finals.

Most Valuable Player: C Evan Skoug (Reds Midwest Scout Team)
Skoug’s Midwest Reds Scout Team lost to the Burn in the semifinals but the left-handed hitting catcher was clearly the most dominant position player at the championship, going 7-for-11 at the plate with a homer and 6 RBI. Teams essentially stopped pitching to Skoug, as he was also walked eight times. Skoug went on to hit 36 home runs in three years at TCU, including 20 as a junior, before being drafted in the 7th round by the White Sox.

Most Valuable Pitcher: LHP Ryan Avidano (EvoShield Canes)
A 6-foot-7 southpaw, Avidano threw six shutout innings over two games, striking out 12 hitters while not walking a single hitter, including four innings as the starter in the championship game. He later went on to pitch two years at Georgia while battling injuries.

2012

Champion: East Cobb Baseball
Runner-Up: Chet Lemon’s Juice

With five PG All-Americans in their starting lineup and a deep pitching staff, East Cobb Baseball cruised to an 8-0 record and an 8-2 win over Chet Lemon’s Juice in the championship game. They only allowed seven runs the entire tournament, never more than two in one game.

Most Valuable Player: SS Wesley Jones (East Cobb Baseball)
Jones was one of the most obvious MVPs ever, as the East Cobb shortstop hit .524 (11-for-21) with four doubles and 10 RBI while playing errorless baseball through seven games. Jones then took the mound and threw four one-run innings to get the win in the championship game. Although he was committed to Georgia, Jones signed as a 31st round pick out of high school with the Rockies and spent four years in the lower minors.

Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Tyler Danish (Chet Lemon’s Juice)
Danish was an equally obvious choice, as the lower slot right-hander threw in four games, picking up two wins and totaling 20 strikeouts to go with a 1.57 ERA. He was a second-round pick in the 2013 draft by the White Sox and made three brief big league appearances annually from 2016 to 2018. He went 5-3, with a 4.01 ERA in 67 innings in between AA and AAA for the Angels in 2021.

2011

Champion: Marucci Elite
Runner-Up: Central Florida PG Royal

Marucci Elite ruled the PG baseball world in the fall of 2011, winning both the WWBA Underclass World Championships and the WWBA World Championships in a three-week period. They finished Jupiter with a 7-0-1 record, beating an upstart Central Florida PG Royal (7-1) team in the finals, 3-2.

Most Valuable Player: OF Ty Moore (Marucci Elite)
Moore hit .350 with five walks and seemed to come up with big hits all through the playoffs for Marucci, including a big triple in the championship game. He went on to UCLA where he was a 12th round pick after hitting .342-6-51 as a junior.

Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Marcus Brakeman (Marucci Elite)
Brakeman picked up a save in a 5-4 win during pool play then almost no-hit Canes Baseball in the playoffs in another one-run Marucci victory. A three-pitch/plus command right-hander who topped out at 91 mph, Brakeman went on to pitch three years at Stanford and four years in the lower minors with the Red Sox and Angels.

2010

Co-Champions: Chet Lemon’s Juice/Dirtbags

Co-Champions were declared by mutual agreement with the score 3-3 in extra innings and both teams out of pitching. The 6-1-1 Dirtbags reached the finals by beating FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team, while the 7-1-1 Juice run-ruled Canes Baseball 8-0 in their semifinal.

Most Valuable Player: SS Francisco Lindor (FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team)
Most Valuable Pitcher: RHP Jose Fernandez (FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team)

FTB Mizuno/Cardinals Scout Team have a claim to being the most talented team ever put together for a PG tournament, especially ironic since they didn’t even reach the finals. In addition to Lindor and Fernandez, who pitched one of the most brilliant games in PG history in a playoff win over the Dallas Patriots, FTB’s roster included future big leaguers Javier Baez, Zach Eflin, Jakob Junis, Henry Owens, Justin Shafer, Daniel Vogelbach and Jesse Winker, along with PG All-Americans Tyler Marlette, Deshorn Lake and Hudson Boyd and future first round picks Dante Bichette and Tyler Gonzales.

That didn’t slow down on day three at Mt. Zion High School as he came up with the biggest swing of the day, hitting a triple down the left field line to drive in a pair. Final 2026 MLB Mock Draft

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
It's draft day and that means it's time for our final Mock Draft with the 2026 group. 1. Chicago White Sox | Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA It’s between Roch and Grady Emerson at this pick, though there have been heavy rumors of a very late deal potentially with another top 5 pick. This boils down to negotiations and we think that they will get there.  2. Tampa Bay Rays | Grady Emerson, SS, Fort Worth Christian (Tex.) If Grady isn’t the first pick then he is almost certain to be the second pick. The Rays like to get creative but Emerson is a well worth prospect in his own right.  3.  Minnesota Twins | Vahn Lackey, C, Georgia Tech This is likely the floor for Roch Cholowsky, though the Twins might prefer Lackey to Roch outright. They are thought to be in on the top college players with Emerson a distant third.  4. San Francisco Giants | Jackson Flora, RHP, UC...

Cape Cod Notebook No. 1

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Cape Cod League Scouting Notebook  Maverick Rizy | Ole Miss | RHP | Brewster Whitecaps  The towering 6-foot-9, 250-pound right-hander continues to stand out with one of the more unique looks on the Cape, pairing a massive frame with a low three-quarter slot that creates difficult angles for hitters. While his fastball velocity was down from its typical mid-90s range during this look, working mostly 90-92 mph, it still generated plenty of swing-and-miss. He paired the heater with an 81-83 mph gyro slider featuring tight bullet-spin action and mixed in an 85-mph changeup with quality separation. Rizy battled his command early in the outing I saw, before settling in to strike out five over three innings, showing the ability to adjust as the game progressed. Through 12.2 Cape League innings, he has recorded 18 strikeouts, and his combination of size, deception, and projectability...

A balanced right-handed swing stays compact to contact. There is quick hand speed through the zone with feel for the barrel. Hallberg has a strong feel to hit to go with power that continues to develop. The upside is apparent.  William Garcia Falmer (2027, El Dorado Hills, Calif.) collected a pair of mulit-hit games over the course of day one and two, going 5-for-7 with two doubles, a homer, and seven runs driven in. 16u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 Carlos Acuna (2028, Sylmar, Cal.) turned in an impressive start on Wednesday, tossing four shutout innings with six strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
