16u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1

SBG Sox 2023 Prime made quick work of Canes Ga Gold 16u on Thursday morning, only needing four innings to win the game by a score of 12-0. Kaden Irving (2023, Gautier, Miss.) flashed some intriguing two-way potential in this one, touching 89 mph on the mound and mashing his way to a 3-for-3 game at the plate. He is a strong and physical prospect with a ton of power in his right-handed bat, and that power was put on display in his very first at bat of the tournament. Irving pounced on a 2-0 fastball, belting one to the fence in left-center field. He creates plenty of leverage and separation within the swing, and with his strength, anything off the barrel and elevated is going to travel a long way. He started on the bump for the Sox as well and worked four nearly flawless innings in which he walked just one and gave up one base hit on an infield single. His stuff was completely overpowering in this setting, and he finished with seven strikeouts. He sat 83-87 mph and touched an 89 in the first inning. It’s a slow-paced delivery but he’s explosive at release, and he was not afraid to on the hands of opposing hitters. He generates arm side run on the fastball, and it’s an extremely effective pitch when throw up in the zone or inside. He showed a curveball and a slider, and both were wipeout pitches that played well off each other. The slider is sharp and tight with late horizontal break at 79 mph, while the curveball is thrown at 69 mph and shows a more vertical break and shape. The Ole Miss commit also flashed one changeup at 72 mph, but he didn’t need to use the pitch with how dominating his other three pitches were. Although he’s listed as a primary third baseman, Irving's quick arm and impressive movement to each pitch project well on the bump. Irving is the No. 1 ranked player in Mississippi, and a top-100 ranked player nationally.
 
Alpha Prime 2023 rolled out a plethora of high quality en route to a 9-4 victory over Banditos Ltg Black 16u. The first of the aforementioned arms was Ryan Featherston (2023, Bakersfield, Calif.), who put together two flawless innings to set the tone for Alpha Prime. He struck out the side in the first inning and ended up facing the minimum of six batters, ending with four strikeouts total. Featherston sat 85-86 mph with a smooth and controlled delivery, and he does it pretty effortlessly. The ball jumps out of his hand, and he flashed solid arm side run at times. He has been up to 88 mph in the past few weeks, and it’s clear to see that there is more velocity in the tank. The ease and polish of the operation, along with his current pitchability, project very well moving forward. Featherston is an Oregon commit and is currently ranked No. 470 nationally.
