CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The top decision-makers within Perfect Game’s hierarchy knew early on that there was some elite talent waiting to be unearthed in the national high school graduating class of 2012.
With that in mind, they made sure that the best from that class were invited to the 2011 PG National Showcase at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla., where about 50 of those attendees would then be invited to the 2011 All-American Classic at Petco Park in San Diego.
On Tuesday night, three of those 2011 PG All-Americans will reunited at Coors Field in Denver when they take part as players in all the festivities that surround the 91st MLB All-Star Game.
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jesse Winker was voted in as a starter for the National League squad, while Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo were selected as reserves for the American League. It will be Winker’s first All-Star game appearance while Correa (2017) and Gallo (2019) will be attending for the second time.
They help headline an outstanding group of 30 big-leaguers who collectively participated in hundreds of PG events during their amateur careers as teenagers. Eight other All-Stars were also PG All-Americans in the summer before their senior year in high school and seven of those were at the PG National that same year.
The veteran on that list is San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey, who was at both the PGAAC and the PG National in 2004. Posey, the NL MVP in 2012, is an All-Star for the seventh time. Not far behind is Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, an alumnus of the 2006 PGAAC and PG National, now a five-time All-Star and the reigning NL MVP.
New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole (2007), Tampa Bay Rays catcher Mike Zunino (2008), Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant (2009) and Giants pitcher Kevin Gausman (2009) are the other All-Stars who performed at both the PGAAC and the PG National during the years indicated. The real rookie of the group is Miami Marlins pitcher Trevor Rogers, who was at the 2016 PGAAC but didn’t attend the National.
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado (2008), Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos (2009) and Oakland A’s first baseman Matt Olson (2011) are all alumni of the PG National Showcase.
