17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Kolten Smith (2022, Ocala, Fla.) is a top-ranked prospect in the class who was a bit banged up this spring and is making his way back as we turn the calendar to summer. The Alabama commit has an excellent frame with a 6-foot-3, 190-pound build and tons of room to add strength to the size. The delivery is very clean with little wasted movement, quality athleticism, and good finish down the mound and toward the target. The fastball is lighter than it was last summer, which isn’t unexpected given how he’s coming back from injury, but held the upper-80s fairly well throughout. The curveball is still very good for Smith in the mid-70s with power and shape to it. Smith commanded his fastball to both sides and filled up the strike zone relatively well with both of his pitches. He’s not all the way back yet but he still looks good as the arm talent is still tough to deny moving forward.

Smith’s teammate Greg Pettay (2022, Clermont, Fla.) knocked in three hits including a deep blast to the pull side that got out in a hurry. The UCF is an extremely consistent performer for the class with a wide array of skills along with a precocious hit tool that allows him to find barrels on a consistent basis. He’s not the biggest prospect at a listed 5-foot-6, 165-pounds but he has a ton of smoothness with some real twitch defensively. The hands work well but the hit tool was on full display with a couple of line drives and a big blast that was fifteen feet over the left centerfield wall. He’s got a very efficient swing with a clean swing path, strong lower half and weight shift, and fluid hips that allow him to get the most torque and power out of the build. Pettay is a gamer and has a real feel to hit as he’s always a ton of fun to watch.
