17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1

Stanford commit and right-hander Trevor Moore (2022, Golden, Colo.) got the start for Slammers Holzemer over at North Cobb High School and Moore showed some intriguing aspects and things to like before the wheels came off a bit in the final inning. He’s a physically built right-hander with good fastball quality, a three pitch mix, and topped out at 91 mph in his first inning of work. The delivery is pretty compact and he hides the ball with an arm action more tucked underneath to add some late deception. The fastball worked primarily in the 88-90 mph range for the first two innings, showing the ability to miss bats at the top of the strike zone. He showed what looked to be two different breaking balls with a 72-74 mph 12/6 pitch that showed some sharpness to depth and a slider in the upper-70s with more horizontal bite. The changeup was good in the low-80s and got a couple of whiffs from left-handed hitters. What plagued Moore in this outing was the walks and he lost the zone in his final inning of work but still racked up five strikeouts and allow no hits in 2 2/3 innings.
 
Moore’s teammate Dylan Carey (2022, Parker, Colo.) showed some solid tools as well, moving well over at shortstop with good size and barreling the ball up with frequency. Carey’s got very good size with a 6-foot-3 frame and wiry strength abound with obvious room for additional physical projection. The offensive skill set stood out in this one with three barrels in three at-bats including a loud first out on a line drive to straight away centerfield. There’s little wasted movement and he engages that back hip and drives off the backside really well. There’s looseness and loft to the stroke with the bat speed and impact off the barrel to project out long term for power. This was a quick one game look but it warrants further ones as Carey looks the part and lived up to that during their first game on Tuesday.
