17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1

Starting the morning off over at Paulding County High School for Frederick Hustlers 2022 Platinum was southpaw Ben Moore (2022, Mount Airy, Md.), a talented uncommitted arm that was a tough out for a tough team in the Diamond Devils. He’s a big left-handed pitcher with a listed frame of 6-foot-5, 200 pounds and tons of room to add strength and physicality. Given his performance, it would be surprising for him to be uncommitted much longer as lefties with his stuff don’t grow on trees. He’s got a deceptive delivery and a higher slot with above average life on the fastball. The pitch worked 89-91 mph early in the game before settling into the 86-89 mph range and he got a good amount of swing-and-miss with the pitch, particularly while elevated. He could move the pitch in and out and used it to set hitters up for his above average slider. The breaker would manipulate shape between a slider and curveball but worked mostly 77-81 mph with late biting action to it. He also flashed a changeup for a swing-and-miss and got a ton of whiffs over the course of the game. He’s a Division-I arm and one that has some draft upside as his twelve months on a draft circuit continue.

Jack Reynolds (2022, Columbia, S.C.) is a very solid prospect for the Diamond Devils and he got a single in two plate appearances, along with a walk, and looked very good from an athletic standpoint over at third base. The swing has plenty of loft and bat speed from the left side as he put together a very good at-bat against Moore eventually driving a hard ground ball single back through the middle of the field. The looseness and fluidity to the swing from the left side standout and he showed good pitch recognition and the ability to lay off or spoil tough breaking balls. Athletically he moved really well at third base though he is a primary shortstop. The hands are good and he showed a solid average arm across too. Given the athleticism, shortstop fit, and left-handed stick he’s a very well-rounded prospect and one we look forward to getting to see much more this summer.
