What happened: After taking the Friday night match, the Noles prevailed in the following two games to take the series over the Tigers. All three games were competitive as both talented squads battled it out. The final two games featured both teams’ managers getting ejected and some talk back and forth between the dugouts.

Carrying tool: Bats at the top half of the order. The top four of Sam Hall, Kier Meredith, James Parker, and Caden Grice provide considerable offensive output. Grice and Parker have been consistent performers, both hovering around the .320 mark. Meredith and Hall are solid bats and also offer some speed to set the table.

Concerns: The limited offensive output from the lower half of the lineup. Although the Tigers do have some pop and star power in the top half of the order, only one batter below them is hitting above .261. Florida State was able to exploit this during the weekend.

Best player on the field: Caden Grice. Blessed with an imposing 6-foot-6, 240-pound build and bludgeoning raw power, Grice has been a consistent force as a true freshman in the Tigers lineup. The left-handed hitter’s power plays in game and he plays the game with confidence and swagger, aware of his talents.

Caden Grice, 1B, 2023 Eligible

While hitting near the .320 clip with 13 bombs as a true freshman, Grice has emphatically planted himself on national radars at only 18 years old. Although swing-and-miss is a large part of his game, Grice did show maturity at the plate, often waiting for a pitch he knew he could do damage on and capitalizing. The lefty starts from a moderately wide, balanced base with high hands. He loads on time, creating optimal separation before initiating the swing. The swing itself isn’t terribly long and is on an uphill plane at contact, featuring major loft. Only playing first base and DH over the weekend, Grice is a decent athlete for his size, clocking a 4.35 run time while slowing up a bit prior to reaching first.

The South Carolina native has also been into the low-90s on the mound and it would be interesting to see how he could handle right field. The game comes easy to Grice with low effort and he knows his abilities. Standing at an imposing 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, equipped with double-plus raw pop, and oozing confidence, Grice is “what they look like.” It should be fun to continue to see how he develops over the next couple years at Clemson.
