*Rk. Denotes National Rank in PG HS Class of 2021

Florida State finds themselves back in the top 10 of recruiting classes since 2018 as they have put together an impressive group. They have been known for their stance of looking to keep incoming prospects from the state of Florida. After long talks and seeing what other programs have accomplished, they seem to have slightly knocked down the barrier this year. Which is prominently noted by one Mitchell Bratt, who hails from Canada. Make no mistake, most of the commits are from Florida and the surrounding states but it will be interesting to see how the out-of-towner’s progress in Tallahassee.

The top of the recruiting class is noted by PG All-American, Edwin Arroyo, who has long been a standout for excellent play at shortstop and his switch-hitting abilities in the box. He ran a blazing 6.53 second sixty-yard dash and threw it 96 mph across the diamond during drills in the National Showcase this past summer. The overall feel at shortstop is going to propel him far in the game and he is going to be a pivotal piece to the puzzle at Florida State in upcoming years.

Florida native and past PG event standout, Jackson Baumeister, is another big recruit on top of the list for the Noles. Baumeister shows big time two-way potential as he utilizes a physical 6-foot-3 frame. On the mound, the right-hander already shows next level velocity as he ran it up to 94 mph this summer and was stellar in his couple innings of work at the WWBA World Championship in Fort Myers just a month or so back. He also flashed elite type traits in the box as he projects as a power type bat down the road. Either way, he is going to be an impact guy for Florida State when he steps on campus next year.

A couple of Georgia guys are also atop the list as they will be looked upon to help carry the next wave of Noles baseball. James Tibbs III is one of those names who projects as one of the top bats to come out of the Southeast area. They swooped into the loaded metro Atlanta area and picked him up just in time. Tibbs mashed baseballs this summer and fall as he hit .342 on the year with four homeruns and knocked in 30 RBI’s in 73 at-bats. Don’t be surprised to see him make an immediate impact offensively for the Noles in the near future. The other Georgia native is one Brodie Chestnutt. The 6-foot-4 right-hander burst onto the scene this year with stellar performances at the High School Showdown and the National Showcase. He ran the fastball up to 92 mph and shows plenty more in the tank while mixing in a slurvy breaking ball. The upside here is huge and it will be fun to watch him progress on the mound in Tallahassee.

Florida State is also going to be adding a couple more impact type position players who are highly noted in the PG rankings. One, Mayes White, is a big snag for them as the shortstop shows plenty of fast twitch tendencies. He ran a smooth 6.76 second sixty-yard dash and he also has the arm strength to go with it, making him projectable at shortstop. He has also proved himself advanced with the bat as he has a career average of .347 at past PG events. Satchell Norman is the other prospect mentioned and is going to be a standout for the Noles in upcoming years. Norman is fundamentally sound behind the dish and has some of the best receiving skills you can find at this age. He recorded a 1.75 second pop time at the National Showcase this summer and is going to be nothing short of trustworthy behind the dish at the next level. He is also a career .330 hitter at past PG events and has four homeruns to his name.

The Canadian sensation who was spoken off earlier, Mitchell Bratt, is going to be a very intriguing follow in the upcoming years as the left-handed pitcher shows huge upside on the bump. Although we didn’t see much of him on the PG circuit, his outing at the WWBA World Championships just a month or so back was enough to back his commitment. He ran the fastball up to 90 mph and mixed in a very sharp breaking ball with a fading changeup. Bratt shows great command of his arsenal and is going to be someone you will be hearing a lot of down the road.

The Noles also added a handful of arms that were all ranked in the top 500 in PG rankings as they look to pad the pitching staff for upcoming years. Dylan Jacobs is atop those arms as he was mighty impressive this summer. At the WWBA National Championship in Atlanta, he was solid on the bump as he ran the fastball up to 92 mph and mixed in a hard-breaking ball. Look for him to be a quick insert into the bullpen in Tallahassee. Another one of those arms is Preston Wetherell, who is a Florida native and has shown well in big past PG events. He has been up to 93 mph and flashes a sharp breaking ball. He still has some things to polish up, but he will get the proper coaching in years to come and is going to be an important piece of the rotation in the future.

Florida State rounds off the class with a couple of guys who are going to be utility-type guys at the next level. Trayton Rank, who has been outstanding the last few years at PG events, is going to be one of those guys you can throw anywhere on the field and let him excel. The bat also plays in a big way as he hit .333 down in Fort Myers at the WWBA World Championships just a month or so back. His counter-part, Cade Bush, is going to be another big bat that will fit the Noles’ mold of guys who can flat out hit it a mile. He’s a PG career .350 hitter and has 24 extra-base hits to his name.

They also will add some local guys to the recruiting class to round off one of the stronger classes the Noles have had in the last decade or so. Names like Aiden Mastantuno, who has done nothing but swing it in his prep career. The lefty hit .350 with 30 RBI’s in 103 at-bats. They will also be adding Florida native Connor Moore to the equation. The fast twitch middle infielder is going to fill some depth issues in the infield as he is versatile with his positions. Moore could also implement himself as an everyday starter in the future as he swings it with intent putting barrel on ball consistently. All in all, Florida State has a lot to look forward to in the future as they have done a great job on the recruiting trail this year.

Coppy's Corner: July 7 Summer Edition

It’s an exciting time for College Baseball. Not only do potential and proposed changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) elevate the game, but we are coming off a thrilling College World Series and less than a week away from Major League Baseball’s 2026 Amateur Draft. In the middle of it all is the Cape Cod Baseball League.  The amateur players on the Cape are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th  through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and...

Nolan Ash (2028, Ashland, Mo.) showed off the power upside for Natty State 2028. The right-handed hitter starts from a spread stance with in-line feet and a high handset with a high back elbow, utilizes a leg lift stride. Creates separation and uses a direct hand path with a slightly uphill bat plane and some feel to generate lift from the lower half. Quick hands and stays in-sync with a rotational lower half and solid bat speed. Showed the power belting a solo bomb over the left field fence. Long and lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with wiry strength present and more room to fill. The shortstop has a high ceiling and feel for the barrel. Colton Dodds (2028, Columbia, Mo.) showed off the barrel feel and power upside for Natty State 2028. The right-handed hitter starts from a wide base with in-line feet and a high handset with a high back elbow, utilizes a no stride trigger. Direct hands...

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. The blend of power, athleticism, and all-fields impact stood out throughout the event.  Dominic Haigh (2028, South Bend, IN) was one of the most productive hitters at the event, collecting 10 hits while consistently creating pressure on opposing defenses. Made life difficult on pitchers with a relentless approach, routinely extending at-bats and forcing them to work deep into counts. The operation remains simple and efficient, featuring an early...

West Region Rankings Risers: Class of 2028

Joey Cohen
Article Image
After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. Improvements in strength, athleticism, and overall skill were evident across the board giving our staff real conviction when it came time to shuffle the board. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a handful of west region prospects who made a strong impression on me this summer and earned a well-deserved jump in...

Walter Izquierdo Jr. (2031, Miami, Fla.) showed off the upside on the mound for Beast Baseball 13u. The right-handed pitcher went four innings and collected three strikeouts while spreading two hits and two walks for one run. The fastball topped out at 80 and was consistently in the upper- 70s. Showed feel for a curveball with 12-6 shape and some looser vertical depth that was able to get weak contact. Competes in the zone well and showed some feel to work on the arm-side half of the plate. Intriguing upside on the young arm.   Brett Hamlin (2031, Jupiter, Fla.) showed off the barrel feel for FTB American 13u. The left-handed hitter collected nine hits, including two doubles and a triple, to drive in seven RBI. Strong hands and flips the hips well to create good bat speed.
