Coastal Fall Select Champ Notes: Day 1 & 2

2020 PG Freshman Coastal Fall Select Championships

Domaine Vann (Greensboro, NC 2025) led off for the 5 Star Carolina 14u Neyra and was seeing the ball well in game one of the weekend. The uncommitted outfielder was a spark for his team as he started the game off with a base hit up the middle. In the second inning with two on base and two outs, Vann came up big with a great piece of hitting going into the opposite field for a stand up double that scored two runs. He finished the day going two for three with a double, a run scored, and three RBI.

Frederick Dow III (Gastonia, NC 2024) is playing for the Concord A’s 15u and is an uncommitted third baseman. Dow came up to the plate with one out, two on base, and crushed the ball to the deep left center gap nearly missing a home run by a few feet for a stand up double scoring one run. He finished the game going one for two with one RBI.

Dylan Gastley (King, NC 2025) came up big off the mound for the 5 Star Carolina 14u Neyra. The uncommitted right-handed pitcher came in for relief in the bottom of the fourth inning with the go ahead run on third base. He struck out the next two batters and topped 83 mph. Castley was almost unhittable only giving up one hit and going two plus innings with seven strike outs.

2020 PG Sophomore Coastal Fall Select Championships

Landon Plunkett (New Nern, NC 2023) was ready to go from his first at bat in the mid-morning game. The uncommitted catcher, who plays for the 5 Star Carolina Gold 2023, smashed a stand up double on the left field line scoring one run in the top of the fifth inning with one on and two outs. Plunkett was seeing the ball great at the plate today going a perfect three for three with two RBI.

Jayden Singleton (Charlotte, NC 2022) is an uncommitted outfielder who plays for the SBA Scout Team 2023 and was a spark for his team. Singleton came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning with bases loaded and ripped a ball to the left center gap scoring the tying run. Finished going one for two on the game with two runs scored and one RBI.

Bryce Hooker (High Point, NC 2023) is an uncommitted catcher who plays for the 5 Star Carolina 16u National team and was unstoppable at the plate today. In the top of the third inning, Hooker was down in the count with two strikes, but hit a no doubter over the left field fence. Finished the game going two for two with a home run, two RBI, and two walks.

Caleb Gant (Matthew, NC 2023) was almost unhittable tonight for the 5 Star Carolina 16U National team. The uncommitted right-handed pitcher was dominating tonight and only gave up one weak hit. Gant mixed his pitches well and kept the hitters off balance all game. Finished pitching six innings with six strikeouts.

Underclass Area Codes: Standout Arms

Joey Cohen
Article Image
Year in and year out when the best young talent from across the country is packed into one national-level event the arms tend to win the week. That feels especially true in today’s amateur game where velocity, pitch design and high-level training in general are being introduced earlier than ever, allowing young pitchers to develop impactful stuff at a faster rate than younger hitters can consistently catch up to it. The Underclass Area Code Games are no exception and this year there was no shortage of arms that made you stop and take notice. Narrowing it down to 10 was difficult, but I focused on the pitchers who either displayed starter-type traits, brought something genuinely different from a delivery standpoint whether it was slot, height, crossfire or deception or simply possessed an outlier element of stuff that separated them from the pack. These are the 10 arms that stood...

2027 Draft: Way Too Early 1:1 Predictions

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
2027 Top 100 Draft Board  Current Favorite: SS Dylan Seward, Norco HS (Calif.) In our first iteration of the 2027 Draft Board, Norco shortstop Dylan Seward ranks No. 1 overall. The switch-hitter is an ultra-twitchy player with a lot to like on both sides of the ball. He is a supreme athlete that should stick up the middle. Explosiveness is shown in all aspects of his game and gives the profiles big time upside.  In the event that Seward does not go 1:1, each member of our draft team selected a player that they think could wind up in that spot. We are still nearly a full year away from draft day, but here are our “Way Too Early” predictions for the 1st overall pick next July.  Henni’s Pick: C/UTL Gavin Kelly, West Virginia    Gavin Kelly (@WVUBaseball) sends this over the wall in CF for a solo 💣 (100 EV/ 416 ft).
