Austin Hendrick vs Cody Bellinger

These comparisons are meant to compare each player at similar stages in their prospect journeys in high school and not comparing the high school prospect to the current MLB star.

Cody Bellinger 6-3 165, 2013 grad 17.10 on MLB Draft Day

2012 PG National Report
Cody Bellinger is a 2013 1B/LHP/OF with a 6-3 165 lb. frame from Chandler, AZ who attends Hamilton HS. Long and lean slender build, extremely projectable. Left handed hitter, tall stance, loose aggressive swing with plus bat speed, sound hitting mechanics, ball comes off the bat very hard, can dream on his bat speed with 20-30 more pounds of strength. 6.82 runner, smooth actions at first base, good range, soft hands, has tools to play corner outfield with no problem, lots of arm strength. Also pitched, raw mechanics with some effort, long arm action, loose out front, fastball topped at 88 mph, some spin and bite on 74 mph curveball. High ceiling athletic talent, defines projection in a hitter. Son of former ML infielder Clay Bellinger. Good student, verbal commitment to Oregon.

PG Observations.
The first time I saw Cody Bellinger was at the 2012 National Showcase in the Metrodome in Minnesota.  I was trading off with two other guys throwing batting practice that night.  Bellinger’s team included well known prospects Clint Frazier, Cavan Biggio, Reese McGuire, and Austin Meadows.  When Bellinger walked to the plate it took about two swings before I was scrambling for a program.  He was a long and gangly thing.  The swing though, was loose and aggressive.  The barrel was flying fast.  I remember thinking, “What happens when he gets some man strength?”  I guess we are seeing that now.

Bellinger always showed big potential with the bat with exciting power potential. Bat speed has always been special but he was always so young for the class and the strength wasn’t quite where it was for others but it wasn’t a surprise to see what his bat has become as the strength has come.

Austin Hendrick 6-1 205, 2020 grad, 18.11 on MLB Draft Day

2019 PG National Report
Austin Hendrick is a 2020 OF/LHP with a 6-1 205 lb. frame from Oakdale, PA who attends West Allegheny. Very athletic build, long and strong with room to get stronger. 6.80 runner, very sound and athletic footwork in the outfield, tends to field well off to the side but gets rid of the ball quickly, very good arm strength and makes accurate throws with plus carry, will be interesting to see if he can play centerfield at the upper levels. Left handed hitter, hits from an exaggerated high hand set up that creates timing variables, has whippy fast hands when he's on time and can create elite bat speed and impact, has lots of lift in his swing, fun to watch the ball come off the barrel when his timing is on. High ceiling talent with some work to do on his hitting approach. Verbal commitment to Mississippi State. Named to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

PG Observations
The first swing and the last swing I saw Austin Hendrick take in person had the same result: an impressively crushed home run that many his age aren't capable of doing. My first look at Hendrick came the summer when he was a rising freshman and his name quickly circulated amongst the college coaches in attendance thanks to some violent bat speed and high end tools. That seems to set the stage for the rest of his prep career as Hendrick continues to barrel the ball up as well as any, showing tops of the scales tools while refining his overall mechanical profile this summer which unlocked the opposite field for the Pennsylvania prep

Hendrick was hitting 3 hole for his team at the 16u WWBA before even entering high school and standing out in a big way. Not many can hit a HR that goes 402 feet before they step foot in HS. Next year he was just a can’t miss at bat with Team Elite as you didn’t want to miss something special which he basically did every at bat. Put up a 1.338 OPS that year with all kinds of extremely loud contact helping Team Elite to the PG World Series title and being named MVP.
