What Could Have Been: NFL Draft

Photo: Jeff Driskel (Perfect Game)
The entire sports world seems to be reliving their youth watching “The Last Dance”, an ESPN documentary about Michael Jordan and the Bulls final season of the dynasty.  For the younger generation, it’s their first real look out this greatness and regardless of age, this would have been “must watch” television. With the pandemic going on it has people glued to their chairs every episode and if you Googled “The Last Dance” following the show’s debut on Monday morning, April 20th, more than 2.4 billion results show up. It’s a world-wide phenomenon that sports fans need right now! The 18 months Jordan spent away from basketball were well documented while playing for the Chicago White Sox Double A club, the Birmingham Barons. The manager of the club, the legendary Terry “Tito” Francona, has gone on record saying Jordan would have made it to the big leagues had he continued his journey on the diamond.

Between the journey of Jordan’s two-sport career and the 2020 NFL Draft occurring Thursday night, it got us digging into our Perfect Game archives to find the best two-sport (football and baseball) athletes who participated in PG showcases and events and rank them based on their talents on the baseball field. Below we break down the prospects into a couple of categories between those who have established themselves in the NFL, players who are still in college, and the high school crop who already show high level, two-sport athleticism.

Below are two Perfect Game alumni who will hear their names called at some point during the 2020 NFL Draft and could have had a bright future in baseball had they pursued the sport.

Jake Fromm
Fromm starred in the Little League World Series in 2011, showing his talent on both sides of the ball as he hit three home runs in Williamsport and struck out eleven opposing hitters on the bump. Fromm was one of the brightest stars and media darlings as a 12-year old.  He continued to play in high school and was rostered in eight Perfect Game events, including the High School Showdown with Houston County.  Playing in front of 30,000 LLWS crowds surely prepared him for his post-high school fame as he became three year starting quarterback for the University of Georgia. He competed for the National Championship as a true freshman, an epic game that is remembered now for Tua Tagovailoa’s walk-off pass. Fromm led the Bulldogs to an incredible three straight BCS bowl appearances and he should be selected in the top four rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Cole Kmet
The 6-foot-5 righthanded hitter and lefthanded pitcher was a standout performer at the 2014 WWBA 2017 15U National Championship. He had two very productive outings on the mound during the event throwing 5.2 innings in which he gave up a single earned run while displaying some power at the plate hitting a long triple to right field from the lefthanded batter's box. Kmet played baseball his first two seasons on campus at Notre Dame but he’s also one of the top tight end prospects in the 2020 NFL draft class, hauling in 515-receiving yards this season with six touchdowns for Notre Dame. He should go in the top 2-rounds.

With a rich history of two-sport stars, it wasn't easy to rank the top ten prospects below, but basing this list off of the future NFL players baseball abilities and showcase appearances helped sort this out.

1. Jameis Winston
There are multiple Perfect Game alumni who had legitimate “prospect status” but none began to show a better resume at a high level than Winston. The two-way prospect burst on the scene in the summer of 2011, showing a hit tool from both sides and power potential from both sides of the plate. There was a chance that with his elite athleticism he could have stayed at third base if he played baseball year-round with what he showed at the National Showcase. His 6.59 effort in the 60-yard played nicely in the outfield as well.  On the bump, the righthanded pitcher was more polished than one would think despite spending the majority of the year on the gridiron.  A true four-pitch mix was quickly displayed at the Perfect Game National Showcase with his fastball and slider both grading as future plus pitches. He was selected for the PG All-American Classic later that summer where he recorded a hit in the game and stole three bases, punctuating an exciting performance by stealing home-plate.  A famous two-sport athlete and Heisman Trophy winner at Florida State University, Winston also put up an impressive two-season resume on the diamond that included a Super Regional appearance in 2013. He logged 60-plus innings while on campus, punching out 62 batters with a 1.95 career earned run average, solidifying his big-league potential! He also got some at-bats during his two years in Tallahassee. Winston was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 15th round but ultimately decided to pursue football, leading to him being the first overall selection of the 2015 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has a Pro Bowl selection and an NFL passing title on his early football resume. What could have been will not be questioned much with how things turned out organically.

2. DeAndre Smelter
It was easy to see the electric arm speed that Smelter had when he took the mound. The righthanded pitcher sported a mid-90s fastball with big life which he showed command of and a slider that had the potential to be a real swing-and-miss pitch as it developed. The enormous ceiling led to being ranked the No. 11 prospect in the entire 2010 class and an invitation to the Perfect Game All-American Classic.  The 6-foot-4 pitcher also put up a blazing 6.58 60-yard dash at the 2009 National Showcase just to further showcase his explosive athleticism. He decided to spurn the 14th round selection by the Minnesota Twins and attend Georgia Tech to play both baseball and football.  After parts of two seasons at Tech, shoulder issues derailed his baseball career and Smelter turned to football fulltime. The San Francisco 49ers drafted the wide receiver in the 4th round of the 2015 NFL draft and it led to a 4-year NFL career.

3. Kyle Long
How many people would guess the three-time Pro Bowl selection, brother of two-time Super Bowl Champion Chris, and son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie, would have had a similar ceiling if he stuck to baseball post high school? Obviously the 6-foot-6 and 280-pound Kyle Long would be physically imposing whenever he stepped on the mound. The lefty pounded the strike zone at the 2007 Perfect Game National Showcase with a fastball that touched 96 mph and his low-80s slider gave him a second plus offering. The size and length gave him an impossible angle to match for opposing high school bats. He also hit a mesmerizing batting practice home run off the University of Cincinnati gym about 450-feet away from home plate. The stories of Long's huge personality and competitive nature, coupled with his elite stuff, made him an easy bet to have a very productive Major League career. The Chicago White Sox drafted him in the 23rd round before the football team in the same city, the Chicago Bears, made him a first round NFL draft pick in the 2013 NFL draft.  The rest is history for the massive offensive lineman.

4.  Toby Gerhart
The 2009 college football season in which Gerhart received the second most votes for the Heisman Trophy vastly overshadows anything Gerhart did on the baseball field.  He was the No. 57 ranked baseball prospect in the 2006 high school class when he headed to Stanford to play both sports. His 6.35 speed he showed in the sixty at the 2005 Perfect Game National showcase was a key part of his game in both sports. The righthanded hitter had a tight swing with explosive bat speed and he played in a whopping 141 games at Stanford on the diamond, even earning a College World Series berth in 2008.  He had a career .843 OPS with almost the same number of freebies to strikeouts. He turned down MLB opportunities to return to school in 2009 and play football which looks like the right choice as he was a First Team All-American while winning the Doak Walker, Archie Griffin, Jim Brown, and Pac-10 Player of the Year awards.  The speedy running back set single-season Pac-10 records for touchdowns and total points during the 2009 campaign as well.  A second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings, Gerhart enjoyed a solid six-year NFL career.

5. Jeff Driskel
Driskel had a case to be one of the toolsiest baseball players in the 2011 class.  He finished as the No. 125 ranked prospect in the class and that was after he didn't play in fall and instead enrolled early at the University of Florida in January. At 6-foot-4 and 225-pounds he put up huge raw numbers at the 2010 Perfect Game National Showcase, running a 6.51 in the 60-yard and throwing an impressive 94 mph from the outfield.  He also competed in the home run derby finals during the event, putting some balls into orbit.  Driskel had enough ability that the Boston Red Sox signed him to a pro contract nearly three years after he played his last baseball game. The quarterback decided to play football and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 6th round of the 2016 NFL draft after throwing for 7,437-yards and producing 64-touchdowns during his college football career. Driskel will enter his 5th season after signing a 2-year deal with the Denver Broncos this offseason. He was a travel ball teammate of Blake Bortles.

6. Riley Cooper
Cooper showed exceptional speed at the 2005 Perfect Game National Showcase, running a 6.29 in the 60-yard dash. At 6-foot-3 he had fluid movements and exciting overall tools and his loose swing made strides throughout his prep career, leading to him playing two seasons at the University of Florida, starting 41-games. He was drafted out of high school by the Philadelphia Phillies and again by the Texas Rangers in 2009, even signing with the Rangers for a bonus of $250,000 before he decided to not take his physical and focus on football, nullifying the contract. That 2009 football season was the highlight of his college career as he won a National Championship, putting up 961 receiving yards and catching 14 touchdowns. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Cooper in the 5th round in the 2010 NFL draft and he scored 18 touchdowns for them over the next six seasons.

7. Phillip Buchanon
Seemingly coming out of nowhere because of his focus on football, Buchanon drove down the street from his Fort Myers home to participate in the 1998 Perfect Game World Showcase. The outfielder made a quick name for himself and though he was raw, his elite speed and instincts were exceptional.  One of the founding members of Perfect Game noted, “Buchanon may have set an all-time showcase record for stolen bases at that early event.” The next spring, he was reportedly offered a large signing bonus that he would turn down to play football at the University of Miami. The rest is history. The defensive back won a National Championship for the Canes in 2001 and was also named a First Team All-American. The Oakland Raiders drafted him in the 1st round and he played ten seasons in the NFL, recording 388 tackles and 20 interceptions during a great 10-year career.

8. Brandon Weeden
Every spring there are helium prospects that fly up draft boards and Weeden was one of them in 2002. The right-handed pitcher had a great body, fast arm, and plenty of athleticism, all of which were on display when he attended the Perfect Game Pre-Draft Showcase and dazzled on the mound. Weeden was up to 92 mph with his fastball and had feel for spinning the ball, too. The football pedigree was shown when he gave up his only hit, a hard line-drive off his leg, and proceeded back to the mound, firing a 90 mph fastball for a strike to just shrug off the hard impact to his leg. It was a "toughness" moment you don't see very often. After an up and down career in the minors he enrolled at Oklahoma State in 2007 to play football.  He bided his time, finally earning the starting job in 2010 for the Cowboys and went on a spectacular two-year run, setting single-season records at OK State for passing yards, total offense, completions, and completion percentage. The Cleveland Browns selected Weeden in the 1st round of the 2012 NFL draft.  He played seven seasons compiling 6,462 passing yards and 31 touchdowns.

9. Mike White
The 6-foot-5 White had very good power potential from the right side of the plate and a mid-80s arm on the mound. He made the Top Prospect Team at the 2011 National Underclass Showcase-Main Event as he showed opposite field power, hitting two triples during the event to the right-centerfield gap. The righty was up to 86 mph in his PG career and had a promising three-pitch mix. White went on to play quarterback at both the University of South Florida and transferred to Western Kentucky for his last two seasons.  He totaled 11,262-passing yards and 74-touchdowns during his college career. The Dallas Cowboys made him their 5th round pick in the 2018 NFL draft.  He is now on the New York Jets roster heading into the fall.

10. Andy Dalton
Dalton was a 2nd round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2011 NFL draft but before that he had competed in the Perfect Game 2004 South Undergrad Showcase where he ran his fastball up to 84 mph heading into his junior year of high school. He was already sporting a powerful build and showed some pop in the bat, notching three hits at the event, with two of them going for extra bases. The baseball career seemed short lived as he enrolled at TCU to play football, earning two Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year awards. The quarterback has tallied 31,594 passing yards in his career and amassed 204 touchdowns.  The three-time NFL Pro-Bowler certainly made the right choice back in high school.

Tournament Appearances

Jeremy Kerley
Ranked No. 259 by Perfect Game in the 2007 class out of Hutto High School in Texas, the future home of Perfect Game, Kerley showed a 92 mph fastball at the 2006 WWBA 17U National Championship and was recruited by multiple Power-5 schools. He chose to exclusively play football in college at TCU and it led to an 8-year NFL career where he scored 14 touchdowns.

Golden Tate
A three-sport athlete in high school, Tate starred in football, track, and baseball and was a 42nd round draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007.  Tate was “Golden” for Notre Dame on the baseball field hitting .318 with 16 stolen bases during his two seasons. In 2009 he won the Biletnikoff award on his way to being named a First Team All American before a second round selection by the Seattle Seahawks in 2010. His career highlights include a Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl Championship.

Hayden Hurst
Hurst was a physically imposing righthanded pitcher that ran his fastball up to 93 mph at the 2011 WWBA World Championship and also flashed some juice in the bat. He was a 17th round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates and signed a $400,000 signing bonus but after struggling in the minors, Hurst walked on to the University of South Carolina football team. After  just two seasons with the Gamecocks Hurst was selected in the 1st round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.

Blake Bortles
The first college scholarship offer Bortles received was a D-1 baseball offer. He accumulated multiple baseball offers during his high school days for his big lefthanded power at the plate and caught, played outfield, and first base while having a big offensive upside. Bortles ultimately accepted a football scholarship to the University of Central Florida and led the team to a Fiesta Bowl birth and victory. The 3rd overall draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014, he has thrown for 17,649-yards and 103-touchdowns in the NFL.  He was a travel ball teammate of Jeff Driskel.

Kyler Murray
The reputation of Kyler Murray precedes him.  He was a top-10 draft pick of the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB draft before going back to play football for Oklahoma where he won the Heisman Trophy in that unprecedented 2018 year.  The Arizona Cardinals selected Murray with the 1st overall pick in 2019. He was rostered in the 2014 PG Super25 17U NTX Regional and his baseball ceiling had All-Star potential. After a great rookie season in the NFL, baseball and football junkies will follow his career very closely.

JJ Watt
This is not a well-known fact, but JJ Watt played some baseball in high school. He participated in the Perfect Game Wisconsin Spring League. So physical and athletic, the sheer, raw power is immense. Football worked out. The five-time Pro Bowler and three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year is doing very well for himself.

Current College Players

Justin Fields
Fields participated in the 2017 PG National Showcase where he ran a 6.63 and showed big righthanded bat speed.  The quarterback at Ohio State University last fall, he led the Buckeyes to the CFP and finished 3rd in the Heisman Trophy voting but during winter interview he left the door open for his return to baseball.

Jerrion Ealy
A Perfect Game All-American Classic participant in 2018, Ealy finished his prep career as the No. 12 ranked prospect in the PG national rankings.  He ran a 6.13 in the sixty at the 2018 National and used that to steal 16 bases at the 17U WWBA, helping his team win a championship. The uber-prospect turned down the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 31st round of the draft to attend Ole Miss. Ealy ran for 722 yards as a freshman at Ole Miss, setting a single game school record with 273 all-purpose yards.  He also played in 13 games this spring for the Rebel baseball team and hit a couple of doubles with 4 stolen bases.

Maurice Hampton
Another 2018 Perfect Game All-American, Hampton was also a 14U Select Festival selection in 2016.  A 6.44 sixty and an 89 mph arm from the outfield at the PG National gave scouts plenty to dream on and he was selected in the 23rd round by the San Diego Padres. Last fall he played in 13 games for the LSU football team, recording 10 tackles. Hampton also played in 10 games for the Tiger baseball team this spring and finished with a .231 batting average and notched a double in the shortened season.

Steele Chambers
A primary outfielder, Chambers participated in the Perfect Game Junior National in 2017 where he posted a 6.88 sixty and showed more polish than a lot of two-sport athletes as his .313 career average in over 200 career Perfect Game at-bats shows. He played in four games for Ohio State this fall, rushing for 135 yards and a touchdown.

John Rhys Plumlee
A rangy prep outfielder with a twitchy righthanded swing, Plumlee was sensational at the 17U WWBA National Championship. He hit .417 in his 30 at-bats during the event with a couple of extra base hits, helping to make a semifinal appearance. Plumlee shattered the single season rushing record for quarterbacks during his freshman campaign at Mississipppi, running for an eye-popping 1,023 yards. He also threw for 910 yards and scored a combined 16 touchdowns.  He saw some early action on the diamond this spring, playing in 13 games and when combined with Ealy, both the football and baseball fields will be worth the price of admission.

Sam Howell
Howell had some two-way ability in high school with an 89 mph fastball on the mound and promising upside and also hit .286 at the 16U WWBA National Championship. Howell was the 2019 Offensive and overall Freshman of the Year for the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heel quarterback threw for 3,716 yards and 39 touchdowns and at this pace, he will be in high 1st round consideration in the 2022 NFL draft.

Trevor Lawrence
Fun Fact: Lawrence might be the most famous former Perfect Game employee.  He worked the Trackman system during the Perfect Game WWBAs one summer.  Countless scouts, recruiters, and players walked right around the future NCAA National Champion. The Clemson quarterback has thrown for 6,945 yards and recorded 76 total touchdowns. He is the odds-on favorite to be the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Future College Football Stars

DJ Uiagalelei
Uiagalelei, a Clemson signee, is arguably the top 2020 quarterback prospect in the country but played in eight Perfect Game events, mostly in his younger years. He showed some two-way ability, particularly on the mound where he had a very high ceiling on the mound had he concentrated on the diamond.

Robby Ashford
A top dual-threat quarterback in the country, Ashford is heading to Oregon to play both football and baseball. He oozes athleticism and starred at the most recent Perfect Game High School Showdown in early March.

Cade Horton
Horton might have the biggest decision to make regarding a future sport when the time comes.  He is a pure passer and heading to Oklahoma, a school well-known for developing first round quarterbacks.  He was also selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic where the jury was split on whether he was a future pitcher or hitter.  That is not a knock as he has an enormous ceiling on both sides with a 95 mph fastball and light tower power with the bat.

Brandon Fields
Fields owns a state championship in football during his prep days and was an all-area player for Dr Phillips High School during his senior fall.  A dynamic playmaker with 6.50 speed that he displayed at the PG National Showcase, Fields was selected for the Perfect Game All American Classic last summer after posting a 1.115-ops on the showcase circuit.  He is a potential two-sport athlete for the University of South Carolina.

The Future

Dylan Lonergan
The 14U PG Select Festival participant is the No. 9 ranked prospect in the early 2023 national rankings thanks to an easy 90 mph fastball and great feel to pitch for his age. Oh, he also already holds an offer from LSU to play football.

Bryce Clavon
The 13U PG Select Festival participant splits his time between baseball and football, many times driving from one event to the other across state lines. He is the No. 4 overall prospect in the early 2024 rankings as a speedy infielder though Clavon’s Hudl video might be even more impressive than his baseball chops. Time will tell.

Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA R-R, 6-2/202, Chandler, AZ Previously Drafted: Never Drafted   Roch Cholowsky has consistently ranked at the top of the class throughout the cycle due to the safety and upside of the profile. Defensively, he is a plus defender at shortstop with soft hands, consistent actions, and quality range. Not only should he stick at the position long term, he should excel there at the next level. Offensively, there is a strong mix of hit and power potential from the right side of the plate. The swing is a bit unorthodox with a shorter finish, but Cholowsky consistently finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority to all fields. He has strong bat to ball skills with impact. He has walked more than stuck out during his collegiate career, giving him a high on-base ability. The run tool is the...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The win showcased the balance that has made Texas Twelve Maroon a powerful team. Strong pitching, timely hitting, and steady defense all played a role as the team held off one of the tournament’s premier programs. Flames Capture 18U BCS Title

Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...
