Weekend Preview: Week 5

EDITOR'S NOTE: With college conferences suspending play across the nation, with some having yet to make a formal announcement, it appears as though there will be no college baseball played this weekend.

Strange times are upon us. As pandemonium pertaining to COVID-19 continues to grow on a global scale we head into the weekend not knowing for sure how much college baseball is going to be played this season. At this point in time most of the teams are not effected, at least not from the perspective of actually playing the games. The Ivy League has already canceled their entire spring athletic calendar, an aggressive and unexpected move that puts a lot of people, most notably the student athletes, in a near unprecedented situation.

Any team that had scheduled to play an Ivy League team (like No. 12 UCF) now has to scramble to find new opponents. Some teams aren't traveling through late March to early April, and others, including Big Ten and SEC schools, have decided that all non-pertinent personnel will not be allowed at games the rest of the season. This includes fans, extended family members, and in some cases, scouts. More and more programs are making announcements of how their seasons will be altered so expect this to be just the beginning in what has been an incredibly disappointing and concerning turn of events.

Of course, this is all said recognizing that the health and safety of the players, coaches, personnel and everyone that is involved remains the highest priority. And after the NBA has announced they have suspended the 2020 season on Wednesday evening we can only expect others to follow suit.

What will happen this weekend, assuming teams actually do take the field and play actual games, is the beginning of conference play for a significant number of programs. Many teams across the nation will still have to wait another week before officially entering league play, but after the ACC kicked off a week ago, the SEC follows suit this weekend, and that conference undoubtedly will be the focus of Week 5 in college baseball.

And there's no shortage of impact matchups, including No. 1 Florida hosting No. 5 Georgia. There are two other SEC matchups that pit ranked opponents against one another – particularly in the wild, wild West as No. 15 Arkansas plays at No. 10 Mississippi State and No. 23 Texas A&M travels to No. 13 Auburn – and with the overall depth of the league each of the seven series carries significant intrigue.

Not fully knowing how much the coronavirus disease will effect our own coverage of the sport, stay tuned for updates throughout the weekend as Connor Spencer and Steve Fiorindo plan to attend several games on the West Coast, as long as they're allowed into stadiums. Access all of the scouting reports (nearly 200 have already been filed this season) in the one-of-a-kind Perfect Game College Player Database.

SEC Ready For Takeoff

We say it every year: the SEC is the best regular season in college baseball. Ten straight weekends – there are no bye weeks. Thirty games played in front of the best crowds the sport has to offer. It all kicks off this weekend so let’s look at some points of interest as we get started.

Georgia at Florida
Florida is the nation’s top-ranked team and the freshman trio of shortstop Josh Rivera, catcher Nathan Hickey and Sunday starter Hunter Barco has made a big impact. Georgia offers a unique combination of two first rounders in the weekend rotation (Emerson Hancock, Cole Wilcox) paired with a lineup featuring three accomplished seniors (Cam Shepherd, Tucker Bradley, Riley King). And by the way, Georgia is the No. 5 ranked team nationally. This is the best series in college baseball this weekend.

Missouri at Alabama
Missouri ace Ian Bedell is an interesting first round candidate. But the real story here is a 16-1 Alabama team that features four very intriguing freshmen: ace lefthander Connor Prielipp, second baseman Jim Jarvis, lefthanded slugger Owen Diodati and Sunday arm Antoine Jean. Diodati and Jean both hail from Canada and Prielipp has shown a big-time arsenal worthy of the Friday night slot. And here’s the most exciting thing: nearly all of this Alabama roster will be back in 2021.

Tennessee at South Carolina
The Vols are off to an excellent start with a signature win versus Texas Tech already in tow. The Gamecocks have been choppier, but stud freshman third baseman Brennan Milone is back from injury and he has already claimed the three-spot in the lineup. Is Tennessee’s pitching staff as good as we think it is? Will the elevated play of shortstop of Jake Rucker and slugger Zach Daniels translate to SEC play?

Texas A&M at Auburn
Friday’s matchup of Asa Lacy versus Tanner Burns is compelling. With the SEC West being more wide open than originally thought, is the eventual division winner one of these two teams? While both of these clubs pitch at a high level, the position player groups are less proven. What both of them do have is experience. This is a Super Regional caliber weekend.

Arkansas at Mississippi State
This is a fascinating series between two high profile preseason teams who have lost some swagger. The Bulldogs are coming off a loud midweek sweep of Texas Tech but the loss of JT Ginn (Tommy John surgery) exposes a pitching staff that was already looking for depth. The injury to Tanner Allen robs this lineup of one of the SEC’s best hitters.

The Razorbacks are similarly scrambling on the mound. Friday night starter Connor Noland has missed his last two starts with an oblique injury. Patrick Wicklander has lasted just 4 2/3 innings over his last two starts with a 21.19 ERA. Meanwhile, Preseason All-American Casey Martin leads the SEC with 22 strikeouts.

All that said, these are two of the most explosive lineups in the SEC, if not the nation. Players like Heston Kjerstad, Christian Franklin, Robert Moore, Justin Foscue, Jordan Westburg and Rowdey Jordan will lead the way in this series and they are top-of-the-league talents.

LSU at Ole Miss
Paul Mainieri’s club brings a super-charged pitching staff and yet unproven lineup to Oxford. Ole Miss is the league’s most surprising team, having lost their first game of the season before beginning their current 16-game winning streak. Keep an eye on Rebel shortstop Anthony Servideo who is playing like a SEC Player of the Year candidate.

Kentucky at Vanderbilt
The Wildcats own the league’s most underwhelming non-conference performance, yet this offense is a dangerous one. Pitching and defense will be two areas that will have to hold up if Kentucky is to make a run during league play.

Vanderbilt enters SEC play with three big injuries: Kumar Rocker is working back from arm soreness, Mason Hickman missed his last start and Austin Martin is out with a hamstring injury. That is daunting, but if any program can survive this, it is Vandy. Freshman phenom Jack Leiter may get his first shot at the weekend rotation and that would be worth the price of admission.

College Top 25: Final Update

Vincent Cervino

With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4  Day 5 | Day 6 Shea Corona (2027, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showcased some loud stuff out of the bullpen for MLB Breakthrough Series 2027. The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. Flames Natty used timely hitting and a dominant start from Beau Collier to defeat NLB American 7-3 and capture the 18U BCS National Championship on Monday at Lee Health Sports Complex. Despite being assembled just hours before the tournament began, the Flames quickly developed chemistry throughout the tournament. “This team was put together 12 hours before this tournament, and they went on a crazy run,” head coach Adam Vasquez said. “These kids know each other locally, but they don’t play together. For them to come together last minute like that, it’s crazy. I’m proud of them for that.” The game opened as a pitchers’ duel, with David Acevedo recording the lone hit through the first two innings. NLB American starter Hayden Graham kept the Flames in check early, allowing just one hit while striking out one over 2.0 innings. The right-hander...

Austin Lyons (2028, Cibolo, Texas) put on a display for Canes Southwest Prime 16U. Went 7-14 at the plate with a pair of doubles and triples, while driving in 13 runs. He won Tournament MVP for his efforts. Physical left-handed frame with feel to hit to all fields. Utilizes the middle of the field as well as the opposite field efficiently. Should be a force to be reckoned with as he grows into some more power. Evan Rosales (2027, Houston, Texas) was dominant on the mound for HP 2027 Allen. Went five shutout innings over the weekend, surrendering just one hit and two walks while striking out ten. Fastball lives 83-87 with some carry. Curveball is a heavy 12/6 downer at 69-74.
