Miami Hurricanes

What Happened: Miami was swept at the hands of Florida, but the 3-0 win for the Gators total doesn't tell the whole story as the Canes were neck-and-neck with Florida for the majority of the series. A few timely hits for the Gators ultimately swung the pendulum in the other direction but it was clear that Miami's roster has the makings of an Omaha team in the long run.

Carrying Tool: Starting pitching. Brian Van Belle, Chris McMahon and Slade Cecconi form a weekend rotation that should compete with anyone in the country and the high-end talent coupled with the results the trio showed should make for a formidable rotation. Van Belle showed one of the better changeups in the country while McMahon and Cecconi each possess high-octane pure stuff, with fastballs into the upper-90s and good sliders as this trio should help lead Miami all season long.

Concerns: Offensive production. The Canes return a good deal of offensive support from last year's team but most of those contributors got off to slow starts in 2020. Alex Toral, Jordan Lala, JP Gates and Raymond Gil will be the backbone of the team's offense, and outside of a few big hits by Gil, the majority of those guys fell a bit flat. Adrian Del Castillo is an offensive bright spot and following a strong freshman campaign should continue to lead the offensive charge.

Best Player on the Field: Adrian Del Castillo. The sophomore backstop is not only the best hitter on the Miami team but also one of the best hitters in college baseball regardless of draft year. The lefthanded hitter has a smooth, short stroke that drives the ball on a line to all fields while he's also got some sneaky pop that makes him some home run threat as well. Del Castillo is such a polished hitter and he's gonna be fun to watch for the next year-plus for Miami fans before the draft comes calling in 2021.

Previous player reports:
Feb. 21: Brian Van Belle, Daniel Federman
Feb. 22: Chris McMahon, Tyler Keysor
Feb. 23: Slade Cecconi, Carson Palmquist

Players covered: Adrian Del Castillo, Alex Toral, Raymond Gil, JP Gates, Jordan Lala,

Adrian Del Castillo, C
The best hitter for Miami, and one of the best hitters in the country, is backstop Adrian Del Castillo who got a bit of the Bonds-treatment over the weekend from the Gators pitching staff. Del Castillo is a supremely polished hitter with some of the best hitting tools in the country, and though at present the defensive tools lag behind, he’s still a first-round talent for next year’s draft.

ZT National Prospects Hold Out to Win 2026 WWBA Sophomore Championship In a game that kept everyone guessing until the very end, the ZT National Prospects won the 2026 WWBA Sophomore Championship over Wow Factor/Toronto Blue Jays Scout Team 8-7. Over the past few days of the tournament, the usually cruel southwest Florida weather had been unusually kind - but the warmth of the sun had still taken energy out of both championship teams. They had finished hard-fought semifinal matches before walking from the backfields of JetBlue Park to the big-league stadium. Enzi-Yaw Otieku threw the first pitch for ZT National at 11:43 a.m. - and this highly anticipated championship match-up was underway. The first three outs came quickly for the ZT National Prospects with their defensive chemistry and strength on display right away. ZT’s head coach, Carlos Avila, expressed his happiness with his...

The right-handed hitter displayed a short, compact swing with a direct and efficient path to the baseball. McCrea showed excellent barrel control throughout the game, consistently producing hard line-drive contact to all parts of the field. Jayson Blanco (2029, Homestead, Fla.) was dominant on the mound, tossing a five-inning no-hitter while striking out six. The right-handed pitcher worked down the mound efficiently with a smooth, fluid delivery that helped him consistently attack the strike zone. He punched out seven opposing hitters and allowed no runs. He showed great composure with runners aboard, stranding anyone who reached. He worked out of the stretch with a big leg kick and did a nice job of working downhill on the mound. The fastball was 75-78 mph and he used it heavily to the glove side. He kept the fastball down early and set hitters down by throwing it at the top of the zone. His changeup (70-71 mph) was used as his...
