Florida Gators

What Happened: Florida went into Coral Gables and swept the Hurricanes as the Gators solidified themselves as the top team in college baseball with a loud sweep. The series was closer than a 3-0 final win total would indicate as the Gators showed every facet of their team with the three-game victory and included the ability to come through in pressure situations with big plays.

Carrying Tool: Stars being stars. The Gators are led by a number of contributors on both sides of the ball but perhaps most importantly is their best players came through in the biggest moments. Jud Fabian was spectacular both offensively and defensively while experienced veterans Tommy Mace and Jack Leftwich were able to go deep into games. This series also served as the coming-out-party for true freshman Hunter Barco who is one of the most talented prep prospects to make it to college baseball.

Concerns: Offensive consistency. Coach Kevin O'Sullivan has a deep bench offensively but to begin the season there seems to be a rotating door when it comes to the bottom third of the lineup. A number of players including Brady Smith, Jordan Butler, Kris Armstrong and Kendrick Calilao are among those interchangeable players and as they get more comfortable in their roles the production at the bottom half of the lineup will improve.

Best Player on the Field: Jud Fabian. Star sophomore outfielder Fabian had a very impressive series on both sides of the ball as he was outstanding in center field with excellent run prevention and turned in two of the bigger hits in the series. Fabian tied the game with a double down the line when the Gators were down to their last strike in game two and then launched a deep home run to the pull side in game three. Fabian is a popular breakout candidate and in terms of tools Fabian stood out above the rest.

Previous player reports:
Feb. 21: Tommy Mace, Christian Scott
Feb. 22: Jack Leftwich, Ben Specht
Feb. 23: Hunter Barco, David Luethje, Ryan Cabarcas

Players covered: Jud Fabian, Cory Acton, Jacob Young, Kirby McMullen, Josh Rivera.

Jud Fabian, OF
After enrolling early at Florida, Jud Fabian started a majority of games in center field last season as an eighteen year old. He endured some growing pains of course, but after a loud summer on the Cape Fabian is a popular breakout candidate. After his performance against Miami it’s clear that Fabian not only is the best position player on the Gators, but one of the best position prospects in the country.
