Boston College Eagles

What Happened: The Eagles welcomed Clemson to Brighton for their first conference series at home in the 2019 season, and while they dropped the first two games, head coach Mike Gambino and his team were able to salvage the weekend behind a strong performance from star freshman righthander Mason Pelio. Friday’s 8-1 score doesn’t reflect how close the game with Clemson was, as the Tigers cracked it open in the eighth, and should one fly ball to right-center field be caught instead of fall, it’s an entirely different game as Clemson would’ve put up just one run instead of three.

Carrying Tool: Grit. Gambino has plenty of interchangeable pieces within his lineup, in part to how he and his staff assemble their recruiting classes, and this gives the Eagles a balanced attack on the offense that will help keep them in games. Saturday was a good example of this, as even though they were down 9-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the wheels kept turning, plating a run while causing Clemson to make two pitching changes in the process. We also saw the competitive side in the pitching staff as Friday night starter Dan Metzdorf was tough as nails aside from a three-run second inning, righthander Thomas Lane provided what Gambino needed out of the ‘pen on Saturday and Pelio was superb in his start on Sunday, as he has been pretty much all season.

Concerns: Pitching depth. Aside from Metzdorf and Pelio on the mound, the rest of the staff has a 4.00-plus ERA which averages out to a 5.52 collective staff ERA. It’s still early in the year and the arms have time to right the ship, but with ACC play upon them, the sooner the better. Arms like Thomas Lane and Joey Walsh were sharp out of the bullpen, with Walsh pulling back-to-back duty, and are go-to options for Gambino, while other arms will continue to step up.

Best Player on the Field: Sal Frelick. Only a freshman, the ultra-athletic Frelick leads the Eagles in nearly every offensive category over the first 23 games of the season, hitting .395 while collecting more walks than strikeouts and has successfully swiped 13 bags. Frelick, a Massachusetts native, is full of fast-twitch muscle, which translates to plus speed, both on the bases and in the outfield, as he manned both center and right field during the weekend. His lefthanded stroke is geared to making contact and putting the ball in play as evidenced by his approach, all traits that will lead him to being a three-year cornerstone piece for Boston College.

Fearless Forecast: Don’t sleep on the Eagles. The NCAA postseason may not be in Boston College's future this season, but watch for the Eagles to heat up as the weather in the Northeast starts to turn, though their next couple ACC matchups will be tough ones as they travel to Florida State before welcoming North Carolina State up to Brighton. This is a group that will keep attacking on the offense, never letting the scoreboard dictate their approach while Mason Pelio has looked like a future ace and potential high pick come 2021 which could allow them to play spoiler down the stretch. Pelio, along with Frelick and Morissette, gives the team an exciting young trio to follow the next few years.

Players covered: Sal Frelick, Joey Walsh, Cody Morissette, Matt Gill, Mason Pelio, Dan Metzdorf, Thomas Lane.

Sal Frelick
If you haven’t heard of Boston College freshman Sal Frelick yet, odds are you will by the time the 2019 season comes to a conclusion and definitely by the time he’s eligible for the draft in 2021. A Gatorade Player of the Year winner in football his senior year of high school, there’s no doubting his athleticism on the diamond, and despite being a three-sport player as a prep there’s plenty of refinement given his overall feel on the diamond.
