Clemson Tigers

What Happened: A week after dropping out of the Top 25, Clemson ventured north and fought through some dreary weather conditions to take two out of three from Boston College, having captured the series following Saturday’s affair. The Tigers were coming off a series loss at home to Notre Dame before taking two from College of Charleston (where junior righthander Brooks Crawford made his return) leading into the ACC matchup in Brighton where the pitching staff proved to be a key factor.

Carrying Tool: Balance on both sides. There’s athleticism all over the diamond for head coach Monte Lee’s club and the defensive versatility of his players allow he and his staff to play into shifts and execute. Up and down the lineup the Tigers showed the ability to find the barrel and did so with several high exit velocities over the first two games, driving the ball to all parts of the yard while executing the little things when needed as well.

Concerns: Experience. Prior to the start of the 2019 the weekend rotation had one career start at the NCAA level, belonging to Saturday starter Mat Clark, as he’s sandwiched by a pair of freshmen in Davis Sharpe and Keyshawn Askew. That said the pitching staff as a whole has a 3.27 ERA and the strength and depth of their bullpen will be a huge component as their young starters continue to compete in. ACC play. The offense saw more than a handful of underclassmen start throughout the weekend, but as a whole they put up 19 runs in their three-game series, including eight and nine runs in each of the first two games, and is led by a trio of seasoned bats in Logan Davidson, Grayson Byrd and Kyle Wilkie.

Best Player on the Field: Logan Davidson. In terms of draft stock, switch-hitting shortstop Logan Davidson should hear his name called within the first two rounds of June’s draft and rightfully so given his track record in his two-plus seasons at Clemson. While he was held relatively quiet throughout the weekend with the bat (four hits total), he still made an impact with his defensive actions, showing light footwork and soft hands with plenty of arm across the diamond. In terms of production, both Kyle Wilkie and Grayson Byrd made an impact with Wilkie shutting down Boston College’s running game and Byrd finding the barrel consistently in the first two games.

Fearless Forecast: Making noise in a Regional. The pitching staff will have to remain on top of their game, and though he’s just a freshman, Davis Sharpe has the arsenal to quiet any potent offense, giving the Tigers a chance to win. As a club they’ve already connected for 30 home runs and the athleticism up and down the lineup is capable of putting up a crooked number on the scoreboard at any given moment.

Players covered: Logan Davidson, Sam Hall, Bo Majkowski, Kyle Wilkie, Grayson Byrd, Davis Sharpe, Owen Griffith, Holt Jones.

Logan Davidson
The big draw for scouts on Clemson this spring is shortstop Logan Davidson who has been sitting atop draft lists since he arrived on campus in 2017. More than looking the part at a long and still highly projectable 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, Davidson is off to a hot start in 2019 as he’s hitting .333 with a team-best seven home runs, an area of his game that should continue to blossom with added physicality.
