National High School Top 50: May 9

There is a new No. 1 in the Perfect Game/Rawlings High School Top 50 as Shawnee (Okla.) finished off an undefeated, 40-0 season by winning its third straight Oklahoma Class 4A state championship. Shawnee jumps from No. 2 to No. 1 and the rest of the top-5 rounds out with Huntington Beach (Calif.) at No. 2, Archbishop McCarthy (Fla.) at No. 3, Calvary Christian (Fla.) at No. 4, and Rancho Bernardo (Calif.) at No. 5.

There has been a lot of shifting in terms of races in state playoffs with a ton of upsets in championship games as well. One state that has arguably been the most unpredictable is Georgia. The only two teams to advance in the playoffs from last edition's rankings are No. 9 Blessed Trinity (Ga.) and No. 11 Pope (Ga.). Despite each team having 15-plus losses, crosstown rivals Woodstock (Ga.) and Etowah (Ga.) meet in the championship of the Georgia Class AAAAAAA state playoffs. Located only 10 minutes down the road from each other, both teams have been scorching since the playoffs started.

The top three newcomers to the rankings are Nos. 21 Moorpark (Calif.), 24 Basic (Nev.), and 26 Hamilton (Ariz.). Moorpark is enjoying a three-loss season up to this point while Basic and Hamilton were both ranked in the Preseason HS Top 50 and captured their respective state titles over the weekend.

The two other teams to capture state titles are Helena (Ala.) at No. 7, La Cueva (N.M.) at No. 15, and newcomer West Lauderdale (Miss.) at No. 39. In total, 15 new teams entered Top 50 and the others that haven't been mentioned to this point are, in order of ranking: Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Fla.), No. 29; T.C. Roberson (N.C.), No. 30; Cathedral (Ind.), No. 32; Tate (Fla.), No. 33; Wylie (Tex.), No. 35; Westminster Christian (Mo.), No. 37; Rockwall (Tex.), No. 40; Monsignor Pace (Fla.), No. 49, and Webster Schroeder (N.Y.), No. 50.

This will be the penultimate edition of the Top 50 before the end of the season. There will be a final ranking in mid-June once all of the state tournaments have been finished. To all who are still in the playoffs, best of luck and we will be back in a few weeks!
