Coach Bob scout notes: Days 5-6

Days 1-2 Scout Notes | Days 3-4 Scout Notes

The Coach Bob National Invitational took place across four separate divisions in the Phoenix area this past week, with three of those divisions crowning champions on Thursday night.

In the National division, host Boulder Creek (Ariz.) High School reigned victorious after coming in second place in 2016, as they defeated Legend (Colo.) High School 9-4 on Thursday afternoon.

In the American division, Apollo (Ariz.) High School knocked off 2016 champion Mountain Ridge (Ariz.) High School in a dramatic, come-from-behind 4-2 victory.

Casteel (Ariz.) High School knocked off Crossroads (Calif.) High School to win the Classic division championship in a nail-biter by a score of 3-2.

No champion was crowned in the "Open" division, a division of many teams playing several exhibition games throughout the week at schools spread out across the valley. Though no champion was crowned in this division, notably Joy Christian (Ariz.) had a 5-0 week and a few of their players are detailed below.

Scout Notes

Generating somewhat of a buzz among the four corners scouting community, Skyler Messinger (2017, Colo.) of Niwot High School has shown well this spring with his physicality, projection and ability at the shortstop position. At 6-foot-3, 190-pounds Messinger is a quality physical specimen with both good present size and athleticism in addition to good room to continue filling out. He moves well to the ball to both sides and is clean charging in on the ball, and has advanced arm strength with a quick release across the diamond. Committed to the University of Kansas, he could be a benefit as soon as he steps on campus thanks to his defensive prowess, and he owns a quality hitting approach as well with good contact skills and an advanced knowledge of the strike zone.

Undefeated thus far this season, Joy Christian (Ariz.) continued their winning ways on Saturday morning. The 375th-ranked player in the class of 2019, righthander Zach Martinez (2019, Ariz.) took the mound for the Eagles and was excellent. He came out firing 84-87 mph fastballs from an extended three-quarters arm slot with good life to the arm side and was essentially able to dominate with his fastball. The University of Arizona commit also showed a quality breaking ball in the low-to mid-70s that had sharp, vertical snap, a pitch he brought out with two strikes and missed bats with ease.

Joy Christian's catcher Joey Martinez (2017, Ariz.) did an excellent job leading his fellow pitcher (Martinez) behind the plate, receiving both the fastball and the slider well and calling a really good game on the whole. He has solid build on a compact, medium frame and essentially looks like one would expect a catcher to look. At the plate, he's balanced throughout his stance and into his swing with a compact stroke and a whole-fields approach. He does a good job recognizing spin and did a very good job waiting back on a slow-breaking curveball before lining it into the gap for a two-run single in his first at-bat.
