Orange Game Highlights

8/21/2022

Henry Ferguson (2024 SS, Knoxville, TN) continued to crush baseballs on Sunday.  He picked up only one hit but that was a ground rule double to left centerfield.  However, both his outs went nearly as far but were run down by opposing outfielders.

Braden Burress (2024 SS, Snow Hill, NC) had a really nice day at the plate, picking up three hits while continuing to play stellar defense across the infield.  His teammates took to calling him "Jackson Holliday" after the Orioles first overall pick in the 2022 draft as Burress has the same type of long flowing hair and Burress did his best to play like Holliday as well.

There were some loud barrels on Sunday as Brian O'Connell III (2023, C, Greensboro, NC) and Ben Skelton (2024 1B, Rutherfordton, NC), probably the two strongest players on the Orange team, both crushed balls over outfielders heads for triples.

Mason Jones (2026 RHP, Wilmington, NC) hasn't come close to starting to mature physically at 5-11/150 but he was up to 80 mph on Sunday while showing two very good off-speed pitches in a slider and change up that he threw at any count.  Jones struck out four in three innings of work and allowed only one hit.

Max Luzarraga (2025 3B, Matthews, NC) is a primary third baseman but he might have a future on the mound as well.  He was up to 82 mph from a loose and fast arm action and threw a very good slider in the low 70's that had spin rates up into the 2400 rpm area.  He threw 61% strikes in a solid outing.

Jackson Rosales (2025 OF, Crozet, VA) is a long and strong primary outfielder with some juice in his bat but he showed a good arm on the mound as well.  He struck out four hitters in two innings of work, throwing a fastball up to 81 mph and picking up a couple of his strike outs on sharp breaking curveballs.

Gold Game Highlights

8/21/2022

Nolan Holley (2025 RHP, Clemmons, NC) had a solid three inning outing on the mound, allowing no runs and only two hits while striking out three.  The solidly build right hander worked in the mid to upper 70's with very consistent running life that got inside on right handed hitters frequently.  His curveball was well commanded and an effective second pitch.

Michael Busa (2025 C, Mooresville, NC) has a nice and fluid delivery on the mound and was able to throw three pitches for strikes consistently during his outing.  His fastball topped out at 78 mph and he also threw a slider and change up while mixing his pitches well.

Logan Rodriguez (2024 1B, Lewisville, NC) continued to swing a strong bat, picking up a double that came off the barrel well and also played very well in centerfield on defense.

White Game Highlights

8/21/2022

Caden (CJ) Wallace (2025 RHP, Candler, NC) has a long and loose 6-3/170 build and throws from a whippy low 3/4's arm slot.  That arm slot gives him big running life at times on a fastball that topped out at 80 mph.  He threw a sweeping curveball as his secondary pitch.

Daniel Sykes (2025 RHP, Spring Lake, NC) continued to shine for the White team, picking up three hits on the day, including a double.  You could see the primary right handed pitcher's confidence grow at the plate the whole weekend and he took some healthy rips at pitches.

Xander Sutton (2025 C, Rock Hill, SC) showed good barrel skills, picking up a couple of singles, one a hard line drive down the left field line where he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

Dawson Tucker (2024 C, Terrell, NC) did pick up a double, probably the hardest hit ball the White team had on Sunday.

Ray Hutchins (2025 RHP, Kernersville, NC) has a very slender 5-10/135 build and a fastball that reached 74 mph on Sunday and has been up to 78 mph at PG events earlier this summer.  What really stood out for Hutchins, though, was the spin on his 65-68 mph curveball.  He was regularly over 2600 rpm spin on the curveball, a well above average number for his age group and a great predictor for future velocity gains.

White Game Highlights

8/20/2022

Daniel Sykes (2025 RHP, Spring Lake, NC) has a long and lean 6-2/170 athletic body that is very projectable.  He has a loose arm that produced an upper 70's fastball that is going to continue to add velocity as he gets stronger.  His 71 mph slider was a solid second pitchy.  Sykes also showed his athleticism in the outfield by making two diving catches and grabbing a third fly ball after a long run.

Nick Russo (2025 RHP, Matthews, NC) has a much stronger present build than his 2025 classmate Sykes and the fastball now that Sykes will grow into in the future.  Russo topped out at 85 mph while pitching comfortably in the 80-83 mph range.  He has a high front side delivery and a compact arm action that hides the ball very well from the hitters.  His change up is his best secondary pitch.

Orange Game Highlights

8/20/2022

Henry Ferguson (2024 SS, Knoxville, TN) was the star of the first day of the showcase games, especially on defense where his quick feet and strong accurate arm enabled him to make at least 4-5 highlight real plays on the left side of the infield.  He also crushed a double and a triple at the plate, both up the left center field gap.

Braden Burress (2024 SS, Snow Hill, NC) also shined in the infield on defense with a number of nice plays himself, as the Orange infielders collectively really helped out their pitchers.  One of those pitchers was Burress, who worked two innings of relief in the 80-83  mph range to go with a nice 70 mph slider.

Brian O'Connell III (C, 2023, Greensboro, NC) is a primary catcher with some strength in his bat but he look solid on the mound as well.  He topped out at 85 mph on his fastball with nice running life and also picked up some week swings on a mid-70's slider with some bite on it.

Caleb Gregory (2025 MIF, Simpsonville, SC) picked up a couple of solid base hits, one a clean single to left field, the other double to right centerfield.

Max Luzarraga (2025 3B, Matthews, NC) also picked up a pair of base hits, as the left handed hitter showed a nice inside out approach in lining the ball twice over the shortstops head.

Gold Game Highlights

8/20/2022

Alex Mooring (2023 LHP, Durham, NC) was outstanding in three innings of no-hit work, striking out five hitters while effectively mixing three quality pitches and throwing 66% strikes.  His fastball topped out at 81 and has been up to 84 mph this summer and he also threw a nice low 70's slider and a swing and miss change up.  After not taking batting practice, Mooring showed he was solid in the batter's box as well with a couple of base hits.

Logan Rodriguez (2024 1B, Lewisville, NC) was another strike thrower, finding the strike zone with 63% of his pitches while working in the 80-83 mph to go with a nice 73 mph slider.

Nolan Holley (2025 RHP, Clemmons, NC) is a primary pitcher but showed good barrel control as the right handed hitter dropped a couple of singles into right field.

Meridian Leffew (2026 SS, Mount Holly, NC) had a nice all around game, barreling up a couple of balls, one right at the left fielder and the other a clean back side single, along with playing very good defense around the infield.  The 2026 prospect was outstanding in drills on defense as well.

Batting Practice Highlights

8/20/2022

Logan Rodriguez (2024 1B, Lewisville, NC) is a big and strong 6-3/195 athlete with lots of right-handed power.  He has good hand speed and drove some balls deep to center field.

Alex Harwood (2024 3B, Richmond Hill, GA) has a similar build to Rodriguez at 6-4/190 and a similar swing with similar results.  There is plenty of power in there as he further refines his swing.

Oscar Hickey (2026 OF, Charlottesville, VA) has a power approach and a young 6-2/170 build that could get really strong in a few years.  He can get more of his lower half into his swing for more bat speed.

Gavin Martin (2024 C, Richmond Hill, GA) showed good strength in his barrel once he got timed up, lining ball after ball hard up the middle for a good overall round.

Henry Ferguson (2024 SS, Knoxville, TN) was timed from the first pitch with good bat speed and loose extension out front.  He hit from gap to gap and showed some of his best carry to right center field.

Braden Burress (2024 SS, Snow Hill, NC) is good athletic twitch in all his actions and was very consistent with his right handed swing, barreling up almost everything and hitting to all fields.

Ben Skelton (2024 1B, Rutherfordton, NC) is one of the strongest players at the event and he showed it well in the left handed batter's box.  He his a pull side approach with good hand speed and lifted a couple deep up the RCF alley.

Brian O'Connell III (2023, C, Greensboro, NC) has the strength to drive the ball and gets good upper body rotation and got the ball in the air consistently with some carry to the middle of the field.

Jackson Rosales (2025 OF, Crozet, VA) wasn't consistent with his swing mechanics but he was very consistent with his bat speed and his approach of swinging hard and trying to drive the ball.  He projects very well as a right handed hitter as he gets more repetitions.

Yuta Shimo (2024 OF, McLean, VA) is a quick twitch athlete with some strength.  He turns hard on the ball with an upper body rotational swing and got good hard pull side jump in a line drive heavy round.

Trae Dover (2025 1B, Clover, SC) is a strong young man at 6-1/215 and he bullied some balls hard to the pull side.
