2006 Top Prospects

Rett Varner  RHP - 2006 - Trophy Club, TX
Brigham Young

¾ to H3/4 slot with low effort delivery. FB in the 84-86mph range. He touched 88. His secondary pitches included a change that was 74-76 mph with good arm speed. He showed a hard (12-6) CB in the 69-70 mph range in warm-ups. In the games his CB was inconsistent. Varner also showed good athleticism and even ran a 7.00 sec 60 yard dash.

Kellen Bozeman  RHP - 2006 - Baton Rouge, LA
Louisiana State

Lean athletic build. Medium effort delivery with a clean arm form H ¾ slot. FB sat 85-86 touching 87 with good downward plane. CB (12-6) with occasional tight spin in the 66-67 mph range. Went right after hitters. Also showed good IF actions with range and a quick accurate arm. Lofted swing plane with some power to left center and good bat speed.

Jeremy Barfield  LHP - 2006 - Spring, TX
Mt. San Jacinto College

Tall athletic MLB player body. Good arm that projects to improve a lot in the future. Throws mid 80s up to 87 and leaves no doubt there is much more in him. He looks like he should be playing a position and his father was a top MLB hitter. However, he could create a lot of interest as he continues to develop as a LHP.

Hunter Rome  MIF - 2006 - Houston, TX
North Carolina

He showed near MLB average actions in the IF with quick feet and quick hands. His arm was highly playable on the IF due to his quick release. At the plate Rome showed a line drive approach that produced consistent contact with good bat speed. As a runner Rome showed MLB average speed with a 6.86 sec 60-yard dash.

Sam Janca  C - 2006 - Georgetown, TX
Texas Tech

Tall strong body with good athleticism. Good receiving catcher with MLB average arm strength (1.91 pop). Showed some gap power from an uppercut swing path. Threw FB from ¾ slot in the 82-84 mph range and touched 87 mph. Showed a decent slider in the 75-76 mph range. Came right after hitters.

Bill Henke  MIF - 2006 - Birmingham, AL
Wallace CC-Dothan

Showed good actions and soft hands during both the workout and games. He also showed near MLB average arm strength (88 mph). At the plate Henke showed good bat speed that was capable of producing gap power with wood.

Daniel Franchois  RHP - 2006 - Katy, TX
Angelina College

H ¾ to Overhand arm slot with an upright delivery. Franchois threw a good FB in the 84-85 mph range that touched 87. His CB was in the 66-67 mph range and was delivered with good arm speed. He also flashed a slider in the 71-72 mph range. Overall Franchois attacks the zone with good command and shows that he knows how to pitch.

Nick Bourn  OF - 2006 - San Antonio, TX

Lean athletic build with good flexibility throughout. Showed good OF actions with range and a playable arm with good accuracy. Near MLB average runner. Showed gap power from a slightly lofted swing during games. Hit the ball hard in almost every at bat.

Jim McGonigle  RHP - 2006 - Houston, TX
New Orleans

Long lean projectable frame with room to add strength. H ¾ slot with a loose easy arm and clean delivery. FB in the 81-83 range, touched 85. Best pitch was 70-71 mph change that he threw with the same delivery as his FB. Also showed a decent slider that was 70-71 mph. Likes to work inside. Knows how to pitch. Body and athleticism projects very well. High ceiling as a pitcher.


2007 Top Prospects

Nick Rhodes  RHP - 2007 - Lufkin, TX

H ¾ to Overhand arm slot with a quick compact delivery. He threw a 82-84 FB that touched 85 and showed some arm side life. His CB showed (12-6) break at 66-67 mph. His out pitch was a 66-67 mph knuckleball with little rotation. He also showed a 71-72 mph change. Overall he showed good command of 4 pitches. A 2007 to follow.

Nicholas Christopher  RHP - 2007 - Beaumont, TX
Lamar

He has a very strong arm at 78 mph with on the bag accuracy. He has quick feet with athletic actions and he popped a 1.97. He ran a 6.96 in the 60. He pitches with a FB at 84 mph, and a 74 mph CB. He is a top level prospect for 2007 with a big upside.

Trenten Martinez  MIF - 2007 - Brooklyn, NY

Good felexability and body control, He has smooth actions and a strong accurate arm. He has good bat speed from a line drive swing plane. He has good power to all fields. He is a top level infielder with solid actions and he is a definite follow for 2007.

Ben Cheatham  C - 2007 - Garland, TX

He has a good athletic build. He has good arm strength and he popped a 1.95. He has good bat control and speed with a lofted swing plane. He makes solid contact and he has the potential to hit for big power. He is a top level catcher and a good follow for 2007.

D.J. Jones  OF - 2007 - Gulf Shores, AL

Strong stock build. Clean delivery Low ¾ slot. Heavy FB with good arm side life and some sink. FB 84-85 that touched 86. Good feel for 74-75 mph change with sink and fade. Showed good athleticism in the OF and is a MLB average runner (6.79 sec). Lofted swing plane with some power potential to RF. 2-Way player just an 07.
